There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas, each delivering support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families. Every branch has a team of volunteers who make this possible.

Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

We aim to provide financial, practical, and emotional support when it’s needed most. To do this we need excellent administrators to keep things running efficiently behind the scenes.

 

What would you be doing?

• Every SSAFA Branch has different needs, however, below are the main activities of a Branch Administration Coordinator.
• Overseeing enquiries: Overseeing the administration of the branch shared inbox and post, ensuring queries are answered.
• Getting people together: Organising internal meetings, both virtually and face to face
• Planning and organising: Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to arrange events such as the Branch Annual General Meeting
• Note taking and recording: Maintaining accurate records of meetings and decisions.
• Communicating: Supporting the Branch Chair with internal communications, keeping other volunteers up to date and informed
• Tracking and ordering: Keeping a record of branch assets, ordering stationery, and ensuring maintenance of equipment
• Supporting health and safety: Supporting the Branch Chair with administration of personal, office and event risk assessments where required

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

• Some experience of coordinating people or events is beneficial.
• Good IT skills e.g., confident using email and online diaries– you will receive your own SSAFA email address.

Volunteer with us at Walsall Park Run in Walsall Arboretum on 14th September 2024

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £11 million a year to run our care services.

What's involved?

Acorns is the nominated charity for this Walsall Park Run Takeover day.

Park Run is an incredibly popular 5k run, and Acorns has an opportunity to collect on the day, and promote our other events taking place at Walsall Arboretum. 

We are looking for volunteers to promote Acorns and its events, and bucket collecting. 

How much time will it take? 

You can come and volunteer between the hours of 8am-10.30am or join us for the duration of the event.

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our brand new Tewkesbury superstore shop. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between.

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers
• Accepting and sorting donated stock
• Pricing donations for sale
• Working on the till

Our shops are open Monday to Saturday (some open on Sundays too) 9am to 5pm.  You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but it would be great if you could support in the shop for at least 3 hours a week.

Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a registered charity that has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers since 2002 empowering them to integrate and engage in the local community. 

Arriving as an asylum seeker/refugee can be a disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. As an organisation we are committed to work alongside refugees to overcome those challenges, and to help them build their lives. 

We offer group support and targeted support work. We offer a range of activities including: ESOL classes; social and recreational activities such as youth club, drama, trips, and family activities; educational support for young people; and casework and advocacy support.

About Youth ESOL: 

Our award-winning ESOL project offers English language classes to young people at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling young people to do well at school or college.

   

About the Role: 

CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our face-to-face study programme called ‘Get Ready for School.’ 

This programme is attended by young people out of education and is based in Tooting on Mondays and Wednesdays. Core delivery of the programme includes English, Maths, Digital skills, complemented by Reading and Writing for Pleasure.

Volunteers in this role are required to commit to at least one 2-hour session per week, during these times:

• Monday 9:30 am to 3pm

• Wednesday 12:30 to 6pm

Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.

Volunteer  Tasks and Responsibilities: 

• Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes;

• Help young people to build confidence in digital literacy;

• Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources;

• Engaging learners in informal conversations or games during breaks to help them practice their conversational English.

• Checking the session plan aims with the lead teacher and assisting learners achieve them;

• Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session;

• Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class;

• Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the project;

• Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential;

• Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements;

• Following CARAS’ confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management and all other policies as relevant.  

Requirements: 

Essential 

• To be 18 years or older;

• Able to travel to our community centre in Tooting (travel and food expenses can be reimbursed);

• An interest in education and English language teaching;

• To be non-judgemental and able to engage with people from diverse backgrounds;

• To be reliable and punctual;

• Excellent communication skills, especially with people who are new to English;

• The ability to volunteer on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons/evenings during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of four months;

• Currently resident in the UK; has asylum seeker or refugee status

• Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check (DBS and proof of residency is not necessary if you are a Caras community member who is more recently arrived in the UK);

• Able to attend volunteer induction training (online) prior to start of role 

Desirable 

• Knowledge of community languages, such as Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali or Spanish.

Understanding the Verticals at Barawak

Imagine Barawak as a living, thriving tree. Our verticals are like the main branches—each one strong and important, reaching out in its own direction but all connected to the same trunk, our community's mission. These four powerhouse teams each have a special job:

• The Fundraising and Financial Management vertical covers fundraising and money matters: This team is all about finding resources—like getting donations and grants—to keep our programmes strong and healthy.They will spend their time writing fantastic letters, sponsorship proposals and funding requests on behalf of Barawak as a whole, but also (supporting programme leads) to specific organisations for Barawak service lines.

• The Strategic Partnership Development and Collaboration vertical covers building bridges: They're the connectors, making friends with other groups, businesses, and everyone who can help us grow.

• The Volunteer Engagement vertical covers welcoming our helpers: This bunch is in charge of gathering our most valuable resource—people like you who want to volunteer and make a difference.

• The Marketing Outreach and Advocacy vertical covers spreading the word: They tell our story far and wide, making sure everyone knows what we're up to and how they can join in.

Each vertical team works in two distinct ways: the first way is for Barawak as a whole, and the second way is in support of each Barawak service, feeding our programmes, like roots bringing water and nutrients to the branches. Whether it's Poverty Relief, Education, Employment Support, Community Engagement or Sports and Wellness, these verticals give the support each programme needs to blossom and bear fruit. Working together, they make sure we're all pushing in the same direction—towards a future where our community stands tall and proud.

Introduction to the Strategic Partnership Lead Role

The Strategic Partnership Lead is crucial in forging strong connections and building strategic alliances. This role focuses on nurturing relationships that support Barawak’s overall mission and each unique programme, ensuring the organisation's growth and the successful delivery of its objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Trustee Support:

• Act as the primary liaison between the Board of Trustees and potential partners.

• Advise trustees on partnership opportunities that align with Barawak's strategic direction.

• Prepare briefing materials and strategic recommendations for trustees on collaboration efforts.

• Coordinate with trustees to identify partnership needs and priorities across all service lines.

Barawak-wide Partnership Development:

• Develop and implement a comprehensive partnership strategy for Barawak as a whole.

• Identify and engage with local, regional, and global organizations, businesses, councils, and government entities.

• Cultivate relationships that lead to resource sharing, joint initiatives, and co-created programmes.

• Secure commitments and formalize agreements that provide sustainable support for Barawak’s operations and initiatives.

Programme-Specific Collaboration:

• Tailor partnership strategies to support the unique needs of each programme lead.

• Work closely with the Poverty Relief, Education & Skill Development, Employment Support, Community Engagement & Racial Harmony, and Sports & Wellness leads to identify potential partners that can provide targeted resources and support.

• Facilitate introductions and negotiations between programme leads and potential partners, ensuring a mutual understanding of goals and expectations.

• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of partnerships in supporting programme objectives, providing regular reports to programme leads and trustees.

Strategic Alliance Management:

• Maintain a dynamic network of partners, constantly evaluating and nurturing these relationships.

• Organize regular meetings and networking events to foster a community of collaborators.

• Provide ongoing support and guidance to partners, ensuring their contributions are effectively integrated into Barawak’s programmes.

Reporting and Analysis:

• Track and report on partnership activities, outcomes, and the impact on Barawak’s service delivery.

• Use data and feedback to improve partnership strategies and collaboration efforts.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Proven experience in partnership development, relationship management, or a similar role.

• Strong networking skills with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.

• Excellent communication and negotiation skills.

• Strategic thinking with a keen understanding of non-profit operations and community-based initiatives.

We try to solve the problems we’re struggling with in life from the big things to the everyday mundane challenges. We try to solve our problems individually and also as a collective community, tackling the problems in alternative and creative ways. We aim to be an intergenerational project - all ages and all kinds from families’ welcome. 

We have a number of volunteer roles to join our committee and to support our projects. We are seeking people who can offer around  1-5 hours a week commitment (in person, online or both). If you would like a more substantial role such as 1 or 2 days a week, we’d also love to hear from you! We are keen to be flexible and happy to explore your capacity to see how it fits with our project needs.

Co-Chairs - 2 roles 

The Co-Chairs will act as a figurehead for Grow Your Life and represent us at meetings and public events. The Chairs will lead the committee in setting strategies and ensure that the committee fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the group.

Other duties include;

• leading meetings
• setting and approving agendas
• signing cheques and legal documents

Secretary - 2 roles

The Secretary’s role is to support the Chairs by ensuring the smooth administrational running of the group’s board.

The Secretaries will be responsible for (or delegate the task of);

• taking, writing, and circulating minutes.
• preparing and circulating agendas as agreed by the chair.
• booking rooms and arranging meetings.
• keeping the organisation’s constitution, a copy of minutes and other records in a safe place.

Treasurer - 2 roles

The Treasurer’s role is to oversee the financial affairs of the group.

The Treasurers will work with the board and any paid staff or volunteers to carry out the following tasks:

• keep accurate, up-to-date financial records.
• produce end-of-year accounts – or arrange for these to be completed and externally examined.
• check bank statements and reconcile them with the cash book/ current account book on a regular basis.
• ensure that understandable systems are in place for petty cash claims.
• ensure that bills are paid promptly, and all income is banked on a regular basis.
• report regularly to the committee on the financial situation.
• report to the Annual General Meeting on the end-of-year accounts.
• prepare an annual budget for the committee, working with the Chair.

Fundraising: 

Funding Bids Lead:

• Identifying funders and completing funding applications 

Fundraising Event Lead

• Events organisation (run funs etc)

Both Leads would link with the Treasurer and group to identify funding needs.

Volunteer Lead 

• Recruitment of volunteers including DBS checks etc.
• Liaising with all project leads and outreach lead.

Outreach and Community Building Lead 

• Contacting and attending local groups to encourage collaborations. 
• Outreach to recruit potential groups participants and volunteers. 
• Supporting potential group participants to engage (for example supporting someone on their first visit).

• WhatsApp - Sending out messages to keep people updated on our activities.
• Facebook - Posting events & helping grow our audience and develop our image.

• Reviewing our activities to ensure we avoid discriminatory practices.
• Proactively seeking positive and creative ways to embed inclusivity and diversity as this is essential to the core of our group.

• Linking with local food sources.
• Linking with local food community groups to develop. relationships.
• Maintaining food hygiene standards.

Cooking Lead 

• Food hygiene / Health & Safety training offered.
• Cooking for group activities (usually between 5 and 20 meals).
• Organising group participants to get involved.
• Helping to make the cooking activities accessible.

Volunteers to support delivery:

• Come along and get involved - help prepare food, learn some cooking skills (if you want to)

About The Role

At WWT, we believe the best way for people to understand and connect to wetlands is toexperience them, so we bring awe-inspiring nature up close. We use resources creatively tomaximum effect, working against the odds. With our adventurous nature comes a deepsense of fun.

As a Craft Champion, you will be the main point of contact with families to assist them inundertaking seasonal crafts. You will ensure the family has all the items they need to safelyundertake each activity providing assistance if required. You will have the support of theLearning team to undertake these sessions and we have plenty of craft materials for you towork with.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need. 

About You

To carry out this role effectively, you will need:

• An interest in arts and crafts and those relating to children specifically.
• A working knowledge of artistic mediums.
• Experience of arts and crafts with small and large groups and families.
