Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.
What your role will involve
There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:
- Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
- Receiving donated goods from members of the public
- Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
- Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
- Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
- Processing sales and serving on the till
- Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
- Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
- Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
- Following new health, safety and social distancing measures to ensure the safety of everyone

About The Mare and Foal Sanctuary
The Mare and Foal Sanctuary rescues horses and ponies that have been abandoned, neglected, or abused, ensuring that horses and ponies have a sanctuary for life. Founded on the principles that horses and ponies, as sentient beings and long-standing companions to humans, have intrinsic value and purpose, the charity believes they deserve kindness and care. Since being founded by Rosemary Kind in 1988, the charity has rescued 1,075 horses and ponies.
With a current annual income of circa £7m, the Sanctuary relies entirely on donations and legacy gifts to sustain its work and has a loyal supporter base of individuals and organisations, as well as a passionate and talented team of 130 employees and 87 volunteers. The charity's objectives include rescuing and providing care for horses and ponies in need, advancing public education on equine welfare, and offering equine-assisted learning and therapeutic activities to enhance the lives of children, young people, and adults with various difficulties.
Rescuing and providing care
The charity's rescue and lifelong care are focused in the Southwest of England, and as part of the National Equine Welfare Council, the Sanctuary collaborates locally and nationally with the RSPCA and other equine welfare charities. The charity's four peaceful sanctuaries in Devon provide expert care for around 150 horses and ponies with specific needs, while a network of knowledgeable "Sanctuary at Home" carers looks after approximately 430 horses and ponies.
Advancing public education
Support and education to equine-owning communities are provided through the Welfare Outreach and Advice team, offering non-judgemental advice and formal welfare interventions when necessary. The Sanctuary educates people on the physical, psychological, and social needs of horses and ponies based on current veterinary and equine science.
Equine-assisted learning
Human-equine interaction is offered through equine-assisted learning, equine-assisted wellbeing, and equine-assisted activities with rescued horses and ponies. Participants relate to the horses' and ponies' life stories, bringing hope and a renewed sense of meaning and direction to their lives. The organisation is fully inclusive, offering both a person-centred and equine-centred approach.
Role specification
The Board of Trustees is collectively responsible for ensuring that the charity delivers its purpose, and together hold the charity ‘in trust’ for current and future beneficiaries, in particular to:
- Ensure that the charity has a clear vision, mission, and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these
- Be responsible for the performance of the charity and its culture
- Ensure that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
- Act as guardians of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment, and proper application
- Ensure that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard
Person specification
Having conducted a skills analysis of the existing Board, the charity is seeking passionate trustees with the following specialist areas of expertise to join the Board:
- Financial expertise (to also sit as Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee)
- HR expertise (to also sit as Chair of the People and Culture Committee)
- Equine expertise
The charity would welcome hearing from you if you:
- Have skills and proven expertise in one of the above areas, either in the charity, private or government sectors
- Are passionate about horses & ponies and their unique bond with people
- Want to develop your strategic skills and gain valuable experience at board level
- Have good communication skills and would enjoy working as part of a collaborative Trustee team
The charity is committed to developing a diverse board and wish to recruit trustees from a wide range of backgrounds including young people, people from minority and ethnic communities, people with disabilities and people who have lived experience of the difference that horses and ponies or outdoor learning can make to other people’s lives. It believes that different perspectives and the richness of its people's experience will help drive its growth. First time board members are particularly encouraged to apply.
Terms of Appointment
This is a voluntary role with no renumeration. However, reasonable expenses are reimbursed for any travel associated with attending Board meetings and Trustee development sessions. The charity can also arrange to pay travel expenses in advance, including booking and paying for your train travel and any overnight accommodation if required.
Board meetings are held quarterly, typically at the sanctuary's office at Honeysuckle Farm in Newton Abbot, Devon, or occasionally at other sanctuary sites. These meetings often include a Trustees' dinner the evening prior to the Board meeting to facilitate team building and informal discussions. Additionally, Trustees may receive invitations to attend various events at the sanctuary's other locations throughout Devon and Cornwall during the year. Committee meetings are held remotely, with each committee meeting twice per year. All trustees will be expected to sit on one committee.

Surrey Young Farmers currently consists of 8 clubs (7 junior and 1 senior) who take part in a range of weekly term time activities such as go karting, countryside walks, farm visits, sports evenings, and craft evenings and we are looking for Assistant Club Leaders to join our Cranleigh, Merstham or Chobham Clubs.
By volunteering with us, you can help young people aged 10 – 17 years old build their confidence, have adventures, learn new skills and have loads of fun - no matter what your experience. All we ask you to bring is your enthusiasm, you don’t need to know anything about farming, or have even heard of us to get involved!
The position is unique as it allows you to bring your own skills, interests, experiences, and projects into the role, to really get stuck in, and to have a positive impact on the young people involved as well as the surrounding community. In the past clubs have been involved in fundraising and community events such as cake sales, barn dances and local litter picks.

What skills do I need?

The Orpheus Centre is a specialist further education college and charity working to support young disabled adults, who are passionate about the arts, to achieve their potential and lead independent lives.
Set up by musician and songwriter Sir Richard Stilgoe, Orpheus offers learning, supported housing and personal care on the same site in Godstone, Surrey.

Evening & Weekend Enrichment Volunteer – Monday-Friday 4pm-8pm Weekends 10am-4pm

About us:
The Olive Branch Counselling Service (reg charity 1140475) is based in central Winchester, serving the community of Hampshire over the last 27 years. We provide subsidised counselling services for adults (over 18) who are experiencing mental health issues, via weekly therapy sessions. Our beneficiaries have gone through a range of difficult lived experiences, including loss, abuse, poor health and the current cost of living crisis. We’re a small charity with 4 part-time staff and aim to help 300 people in 2024. We recently secured a multi-year grant from the National Lottery, putting us on a more secure financial footing for 3 years. We still need to raise a further £30,000 in 2024. We have 44 volunteer counsellors supporting our clients, who are committed to helping people in need, and in turn we support their continuous professional development by funding their counselling supervision.
Role overview:
The Olive Branch Counselling Service is welcoming Trustees to join our Board of Directors. Trustees play a vital role in making sure that The Olive Branch achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the service has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, the Trustees support and challenge the Clinical team to enable the charity to grow and thrive to achieve our mission.
Duties and responsibilities
• Support and guide our charity’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
• Approve operational strategies and policies, monitor and evaluate their implementation.
• Oversee charity’s financial plans and budgets, monitor and evaluate progress.
• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
• Review and approve charity’s financial statements.
• Provide direct support to one or more operational functions, for example; treasurer, fundraising, clinical governance, training, external comms and engagement.
• Keep abreast of changes in our charity’s operating environment.
• Contribute to regular reviews of charity’s own governance by attending regular Board meetings.
• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect charity’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.
• Contribute to the broader promotion of charity’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
• Board members have a collective responsibility with regards to governance and decision-making.
What we are looking for
We are looking for people willing to bring their time, energy, enthusiasm and commitment to The Olive Branch Counselling Service. We particularly need help in accessing more funding opportunities through sponsorships, grants, community fundraising and local business links. If you have skills or expertise in areas such as communications and engagement, financial management, fundraising or governance, we would love to hear from you. Most important is having the time and being willing to be pro-active with directly supporting the work of the charity. You do not need previous charity governance experience - a full induction will be provided.

• Trustees are appointed for a 3 year term of office, renewal for further terms to be approved by the Board.
• This is a voluntary position, reasonable expenses incurred whilst carrying out Olive Branch duties can be reimbursed.
• Time commitment varies depending on duties, approximately 1-2 days per month to cover meetings, tasks and liaising with staff/partner organisations.
• Circa 6-8 Board meetings annually, either in person at The Olive Branch office or remotely via Zoom/Teams.
• Annual General Meeting is usually held mid-June in central Winchester.

If you're looking to meet new people and make a real difference in your local community, this role is for you. You will help to lead the support group in the Medway area, you'll help people affected by Parkinson's to draw on invaluable support from their peers.
You'll have a chance to use and develop your administrative, leadership and communication skills - supported by local staff, to develop a programme of activities for your group.
What you will be doing
- Act as a contact for local and UK office staff
- Arrange the group's programme of activities, including any outings
- Organise room booking and refreshments
- Working with staff and other volunteers to ensure the group runs in line with Parkinson's UK guidelines

- Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
- Following new health, safety and social distancing measures to ensure the safety of everyone

The Neuroblastoma UK Board of Trustees is seeking a Treasurer. This role is vital in ensuring best practice and excellent record keeping across our financial and fundraising activities. It involves working closely with the rest of the board of between 8 and 12 Trustees to ensure the board has clarity on our financial position and availability of funds for our research grants. It also involves working closely with our small team of smart and passionate employees who work to drive vital income to the charity.
Neuroblastoma UK has a clear strategy, and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. The Trustees are the ‘guardians of purpose’, making sure that all decisions put the needs of our beneficiaries first. The Trustees have independent control over, and legal responsibility for, the Charity’s management and administration
The role of the Treasurer
- To oversee and present budgets, accounts and financial statements to the Board
- To ensure the financial resources of the Charity meet its present and future needs
- To ensure appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
- To advise on the financial implication of the Charity’s strategic plan
- To lead the Board on investment strategy and to monitor and ensure that it is consistent with the Charity’s policies and legal responsibilities
- To ensure that accounts are prepared in accordance with the relevant statutory bodies i.e the Charity Commission, Registrar of Companies
- To keep the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
- Liaise and manage our volunteer bookkeeper
- To help streamline our digital resources and Gift Aid reclaims
What we are looking for
- An individual with integrity, passion and strategic vision
- A commitment to the Charity – minimum requirement 3 years term of office
- Good, independent judgement and a willingness to speak their mind
- Accountancy and financial skills are a requirement, as well as experience using digital resources
- An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties and responsibilities of a Trusteeship
The Charity holds 4 board meetings a year, with each lasting approx. 2.5 hrs, plus preparation time. Average of 4- 6 hours per month in addition for ongoing communications and decision making. As a Board member and therefore an ambassador of the Charity there will be fundraising and research events which we hope you show a willingness to attend, subject to your availability.
