The Bar Standards Board, the independent regulatory body for barristers in England and Wales, is seeking new lay and barrister members.

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is the independent regulator for barristers and related specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales.  We exercise the regulatory functions delegated to us by the Bar Council in line with the regulatory objectives laid down by the Legal Services Act 2007. The primary role of the Board is to ensure that we act in the public interest in accordance with those objectives.   To that end, we set education and training requirements, establish and maintain professional standards, authorise organisations, and deal with questions of professional misconduct. We are governed by a Board of 11 members, made up of five practising barristers and six lay people, including the Chair.

We seek to appoint two lay Board members and one barrister Board member who will work with others on the Board to lead the organisation through a time of far reaching change in the legal services market and its regulation. Over the next ten years, barristers in England and Wales will continue to face major challenges. These include levels of public funding, changing consumer demands and expectations, and technological advances.  The BSB must ensure that its regulation is risk-based, proportionate and agile in a changing legal services and regulatory landscape.  It must also seek to promote equality and diversity at the Bar. 

To meet these challenges the Bar Standards Board itself is reforming to become more proactive and consumer-focused in its approach to regulation and more efficient in its delivery of its regulatory functions.

We want the Bar to be as fully diverse as the society it serves, and we strive for diverse representation to be reflected across all areas of our organisation, including on our Board. For lay members, the Board is especially keen to appoint someone with experience of consumer advocacy, policy and/or engagement and someone with strong commercial expertise (ideally that would include change management in a commercial context as well as risk and finance at a strategic level).

You will have an awareness of the issues facing the justice system and the legal services market. You should be able to provide high-level strategic thinking, advice and leadership on the development and implementation of policy relating to the work of the BSB.  You will also understand the role of non-executive directors in supporting and challenging the executive team to achieve the BSB’s objectives.

The Museums Association’s Members Support Fund (formerly Benevolent Fund) exists to support MA members facing financial difficulties and to provide financial support for professional development.

We are looking for two new trustees to join the existing fund who will add to this charity with an understanding of charitable giving and commitment to furthering professional development in the sector.

The role involves attending at least two online meetings per year and liaising as a committee via email and telephone and dealing with applications during the year. The role is not remunerated but expenses are reimbursed.

Pecan is seeking an accountant and Christian to join the Board of Trustees as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance committee. See person spec.

Pecan is a community development charity based in Peckham. We work with the local community to help people find a way through seemingly impossible barriers to a better future.

Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen thousands of clients flourish through our programs, including: ex-offenders and their families, refugees and asylum seekers, young people and the long-term unemployed. We see our service users as people who need supporting – not problems which need solving.

We advocate for those we work with, challenging inequality and injustice at a local and national level to provide hope and belief in a better a future for our community.

Board meetings are held on 10-12 occasions annually on a weeknight at 6.30pm.

Meetings of the Finance committee are held quarterly at a time agreed between trustees and management.

The Treasurer, along with the other finance committee members and senior management, guides the financial and business matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with our governing documents and legal obligations. There are no executive responsibilities within Pecan and the Treasurer will not be an employee.

Main responsibilities and duties - in addition to the general responsibilities of a Trustee and undertaken with other members of the Finance sub-committee

 - To scrutinise and recommend budgets, accounts, financial policies, management accounts and financial statements to the board of Trustees after discussions with the Chief Executive, other senior staff, and other members of the Finance Committee, where applicable.

- To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charity’s policies, good governance mechanisms, and legal and regulatory requirements

- To ensure that Pecan has appropriate reserves and investment policies.

- Liaising where applicable with appropriate members of the core management team responsible for the financial and operational activities of the charity.

- Attending and contributing to the work of finance committee in line with its terms of reference and reporting back to the board of Trustees verbally and in writing.

- Liaising with the charity’s auditors where appropriate and monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.

- Ensuring that specific financial and organisational controls and systems are in place and adhered to.

- Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans.

- Ensuring that sound financial management of the charity’s resources is maintained and that expenditure and investment are in line with the charity’s objects.

- Reviewing the financial aspects of the charity’s risk register.

Main Responsibilities of the Treasurer

In relation to the Committee

• Assist the Chair and management committee to formulate strategic plans and regular review of long-term strategic aims of the organisation.
• Inform organisational financial polies
• To present financial reports to the board, including the organisation’s end of year accounts.
• Advice on the financial implications of the organisation’s operational plans and strategies
• Advise on the organisational fundraising strategy
• Ensure that there is no conflict between investment and CIHA’s mission and values.

In relation to the CEO

• Assist the Chair to appoint the CEO and contribute to the process of appraising and constructively guiding the performance of the CEO.
• Assume guardianship of the legal and financial integrity of the organisation.
• Advise the Chair and CEO on matters of financial strategy.
• Oversee the CEO’s activities in the context of financial responsibility
• Together with the Chair maintain careful oversight of any risk to reputation and/or financial standing of the organisation.
• Receive regular informal progress reports of the organisation’s financial performance through the CEO and Chair.

Board Member

As a member of the Board, you will be responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation, developing its aims, objectives and goals in accordance with company guidelines, legal and regulatory guidelines, you will help to protect the wealth and assets of the organisation.

Ensuring that the organisation complies with internal policy and legislation.

Making sure that the organisation pursues defined goals in line with its stated objectives.

We're a growing organisation with 605 employees, 4000 volunteers and a projected income of £43m. The Board of Trustees and its committees govern the charity with diligence and enthusiasm and make sure we're financially stable, well-run, and delivering what the Parkinson's community really needs.

Our trustees and independent committee members come from a wide range of backgrounds and have diverse experience, which we draw on to guide and oversee the charity’s work. Trustees share this responsibility both individually and collectively. This requires Trustees to contribute in an informed and active way to all aspects of the Board’s work. 

What you’ll bring 

To complement our collective skillset we are looking for a new Trustee to join the Board (currently comprising 13 Trustees) who is, or who has significant and recent experience as a Parkinson’s health and care professional in the UK,  to help oversee the charity’s activities in health and social care.

We welcome applications from candidates, who can demonstrate the following:

• Substantial specialist Parkinson’s clinical experience in a UK health or social care setting

• Good understanding of wider issues and opportunities in UK health and social care, for example in:

1. the delivery of services to people with Parkinson's and/or 
2. educating and developing the workforce

• Understanding or willingness to learn about what it means to be a trustee

• Willingness and availability to devote the necessary time and effort

• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team

• Effective networking and  communication skills to represent the charity with external stakeholders

Management Committee Members Sought by thriving grassroots mental health charity at the cutting edge of advocacy service delivery in South London

Community Support Network South London (CSN) is a Brixton based mental health service user led and run mental health charity which currently provides mental health advocacy services primarily within the London borough of Lambeth in forensic, (for people with a criminal record in addition to mental health problems); in-patient and community settings.  We are seeking people to join our small and friendly Management Committee which currently has hybrid meetings on a bi-monthly basis.  Management Committee members may also get involved in other aspects of the organisation, such as: promoting the organisation, fundraising, recruitment & other HR issues as appropriate to the trustee role of a small charity.

Expenses reasonably incurred in the execution of the role (e.g. travel) will be met.

Skills/qualifications required for this role:

Understanding of what is required of a trustee, (although an induction pack and training will be provided).  Committee members will guide the work of the organisation, through policy and strategic development, funding. financial control & monitoring service provision.

Leadership, Mental Health, organisational development, management, financial and HR (Human Resources) skills and experience will be a particular asset, as will strategic development and fundraising experience.  We particularly welcome people who have experience of mental health problems and/or mental distress to join our Committee.

Over the last five years of our forty year history, Dementia Concern has been on a mission to reach every person in Ealing living with dementia. We are over halfway there. This Board recruitment campaign is a chance for new Trustees to help us drive forward the charity’s strategy 2024-27 and help us deepen our impact.

The Members & Journal Administrator oversees the coordination and management of membership data and administers Journal communications on behalf of the ADH Journal Editor. As a member of the ADH Executive Committee, the role reports to the ADH Chair and to ADH Editor, with the option of recruiting and working alongside a Membership Assistant.

The Members and Journal Administrator oversees communications with members and subscribers, coordinates renewal processes and subscription levels, ensures upholding personal data protection in line with UK guidelines, implements and advises on members and Journal communications. The role contributes to upholding ADH charitable aims.

The role is particularly suited to individuals looking for experience in academic publishing, administration and seeking to extend their network in the dress and textile history sector. Due to meetings required in the role, it is recommended for (but not exclusive to) candidates supported by their employer or within postgraduate studies as a professional development opportunity.

Falklands Conservation is a non-governmental organisation working to protect the wildlife in the Falkland Islands for future generations. We undertake practical conservation projects, surveys and scientific studies, conduct annual monitoring of seabird populations, rehabilitate oiled penguins, publish guides and information on many aspects of the Falkland Islands environment, and involve Islanders of all ages in our activities. 

Falklands Conservation is a UK registered charitable company started in 1998 when it took over the activities and assets of a charitable trust founded in 1979 by Sir Peter Scott.

This role is for a trustee who will act as global treasurer and be the lead trustee for finance, investments and audit.Our next Treasurer will continue the oversight of our finances and investments, providing specific support and direction on all matters money-related.  They will advise the other trustees on these matters and support the finance team of the organisation.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who would like experience of a non-executive role on a board (an existing trustee will act as a mentor).  It's a unique opportunity to get involved in an international conservation charity that makes a real difference in a location where nature is in charge.

About the role.

The University is looking to appoint two Independent Governors to join its Governing Council, which will include membership of its Performance, People & Resources Committee (PPRC).

The Governing Council and its Committees

The University’s Governing Council is the governing body of the University and the board of directors of the company. Membership comprises of a majority of independent governors (Lay Members) alongside representatives from the University’s staff and student body. There are five Council meetings and two strategy days for per year.

Performance, People and Resources Committee (PPRC)

The PPRC is responsible for seeking assurance and advising the Governing Council on matters relating to the University’s people and culture strategy and digital strategy, in addition to financial and other areas of performance.

The Committee meets five times per year, alternating between in-person and virtual meetings.

We are seeking to appoint a trustee with senior safeguarding expertise and experience, this may be from areas including social care, the Police, other statutory services, or the not-for-profit sector. 

ABOUT THE ROLE

The role of the Trustees is to develop Scouts in keeping with its charitable objectives and in the parameters of good governance. We are particularly looking for a Trustee to contribute their extensive senior level skills and experience in the area of Safeguarding and to Chair the Safeguarding Committee.

Main responsibilities

• To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the strategic aims of the organisation, and in providing direction for its ongoing development, in accordance with the Bye Laws.
• To provide support as the Board’s safeguarding-focussed Trustee contributing specialist skills, experience and knowledge as required.
• With other Trustees, to ensure that the policy and practices of the Association are in keeping with its aims.
• With other Trustees, to exercise effective control, ensuring that the Association functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.
• With other Trustees, to fulfil all other duties as laid out by law and in accordance with the Bye Laws.
• To chair the Safeguarding Committee which is responsible for the strategic oversight and challenge to the organisation on the discharge of its safeguarding responsibilities.

Main duties

Developing and reviewing strategic aims

•  Consider the Association’s strategic plans and make sure they reflect safeguarding legislation, relevant regulations, statutory guidance, and the safeguarding expectations of the Charities Commission
• Work with the senior staff and volunteers to regularly review whether the practice of the Association is creating a safer culture and keeping people safe.
• Check that the Association’s risk register reflects current safeguarding risks appropriately and has put in place effective risk mitigations.
• Abide by the principles laid down in the person specification (and code of conduct).
• Attend meetings of the Trustee Board and the reporting committees (frequency varies).
• Reflect the Scouts’ vision, strategy, major policies and values at all times.
• Contribute specific skills, experience and contacts in support of our activities.

Ensuring policies and practice are effective and in keeping with aims

Make sure there is an annual review of safeguarding policies and procedures and that this is reported to trustees.

• Scrutinise the performance of the Association relating to safeguarding to see whether policies and procedures are effective.
• Make sure there is a regular effective (internal and external) quality assurance framework using qualitative and quantitative data to monitor the effectiveness of safeguarding practice.
• Learn from case reviews locally and nationally, to improve the Association’s policies, procedures and practices.
• Reflect the Trustees’ policies and concerns in all interactions with the Movement.
• Assist in the implementation of the Association’s strategic goals.

Creating the right culture

• Champion safeguarding throughout the Association.
• Attend relevant safeguarding training events and conferences.
• Support the trustees in developing their individual and collective understanding of safeguarding.
• Attend meetings, activities, projects to engage with staff, volunteers and young people to understand safeguarding on the ground.
• Support regular safeguarding updates for staff, volunteers and young people.
• Make sure you have ways of gathering the views of staff and volunteers in relation to safeguarding and sharing these with the Board.
• Work effectively as a team member of the Trustee Board in exercising its responsibilities and functions.
• Protect the assets and integrity of the charity, with regard to best practice.
• Maintain good relations with Association staff.
• Fulfil such other duties and assignments as may be required from time to time by the Trustee Board.
• Engage with members of the Movement at other levels in the organisation.

THE PERSON

As a Trustee of the Board, you should be able to demonstrate and provide evidence of the following criteria listed under Part 1 within your written application. This will be tested further at the preliminary interview stage, along with the criteria listed under Part 2.

We are particularly interested in applications from candidates with strategic safeguarding experience in sectors such as Social Care (e.g. service manager to director role experience), Health (e.g. deputy or chief nurse experience), Police (e.g. Superintendent to Chief Constable experience) and Education (e.g. Head Teacher experience).

Part 1

• The successful candidate will be able to give evidence of:
• A record of proven and significant achievement and executive background in operational and strategic safeguarding.
• An understanding of the type of work undertaken by the Association and commitment to the values and ethos of The Scout Association.
• Successful experience of operating on a board or a major committee in a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation.
• Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives.
• Confident and effective communication skills with a range of audiences, including Trustees, the Chief Executive, senior staff, senior volunteers and others, and the ability to challenge in a constructive way.

 Part 2

• An understanding of how to motivate and enthuse volunteers.
• A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision-making.
• An understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees, UK Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive.
• A track record of commitment to promoting inclusion, equality and diversity.
• Wider involvement with the voluntary sector and other networks.
• Enthusiasm, energy and time to commit to this role.

Other essential criteria

• Commitment to attend four Board of Trustee meetings each calendar year, one of those will be a two-day residential held over the weekend).
• Attendance at the Annual General Meeting of the Council (AGM) held in the first week of September each year (this will be on a Saturday).
• Availability to chair the Safeguarding Committee, who meet four times per year. Three of these meetings are virtual and outside 9-5 working hours – the fourth meeting will be a full-day face-to-face session.

 APPOINTMENT TERM

Appointments are typically for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of a further term of three years subject to a satisfactory appraisal.

REMUNERATION AND EXPENSES

In common with other registered charities, there is no remuneration directly associated with the role, although the Association will reimburse fully for all reasonable and properly documented expenses incurred in performing duties.
