The current Board is a welcoming, collegiate and energetic group, working hard to make a positive impact on the lives of older people in Tower Hamlets, Newham and Hackney. I have recently joined the organisation as chair and am looking forward to steering the organisation through an exciting period of transformation as we begin to implement our new, and ambitious, five year strategy.

AUKEL has sound finances and a strong reputation for its service delivery (Hospital to Home service, community services, digital inclusion and Information and Advice). From this strong base, the organisation has an ambition to amplify the voices of older people within our communities and to create a more collaborative culture which both improves the connectedness of our services and also strengthens our relationships with local voluntary, statutory, community and faith groups.

About us 

Age UK East London (AUKEL) is a local independent charity, which is part of the national Age UK network. We work across Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham to deliver services which support older people to live healthier, happier and more fulfilled lives. 

Our work 

Each year we support around 20,000 older East Londoners by providing flexible practical and emotional support in homes, hospitals and in the community. 

Our boroughs have the country’s highest pensioner poverty in the country, further exacerbated by the current cost of living crisis. 

How we help 

1. We tackle poverty 

Each year our advice service supports over 2,000 older people to claim £3.2million in welfare benefits, grants and relief entitlements. During the cost of living crisis we distributed £42,000 worth of emergency vouchers for food, helping older people ensure there was food in the fridge. 

1. We alleviate loneliness 

According to a national model, Tower Hamlets has the highest rates of loneliness in London and in England. Our East End Friends initiative teams housebound older people who’d like a bit more company with a volunteer to visit them at home. 92% of older people said they felt less isolated and lonely and 100% of volunteers would recommend the scheme. 

1. We improve health. 

Many older people in our boroughs have very poor health. For example, at age 65, women can expect just six more years of good health, which is the lowest in London and almost the lowest in England. This reduces their quality of life and can make it harder to remain independent. As well as increasing income and addressing loneliness (both determinants of health) we offer yoga, walking, and chair-based exercise groups at our community centre in Bow. 87% of participants said they are more independent as a result. 

1. We increase independence. 

Many older people live alone and struggle to manage around the home. Our home from hospital service supports 3,000 older people to return to a safe and warm home. Just 6% are readmitted to hospital within 28 days compared to 15.3% in areas where there aren’t these services. 

The Team 

We have an established and talented Senior Management Team, a committed staff team and an extraordinary group of volunteers. Fifteen months ago the board recruited a new Chief Executive. She is ambitious for the charity, comes with a great track-record of charity leadership, and has worked hard with trustees to develop our new organisational strategy. 

Role Requirements 

We are looking for someone with finance expertise, and a recognised accountancy qualification, to support our treasurer. This is potentially a developmental role where you will gain knowledge and experience of charity finance practice. Any previous experience in the voluntary sector, adult social care, NHS, or similar relevant experience to the work of AUKEL would be helpful.

You must want to improve the lives of older people across East London and be committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and understand the impact disadvantage and discrimination has on the life chances of our population. You will be curious, collaborative and ambitious and able to commit to an average of one-to two days a quarter (most meetings are in the evenings). 

We would really like our board of trustees to look more like the community we serve. We would particularly encourage you to apply if you are an older person and/or you are a person of the global majority.

What I get out of being on the AUKEL Board 

'I continue to be impressed with the extent of the help AUKEL provides in our communities. The need for the service is increasing as the cost of living crisis deepens. I see the Trustee role as an enabling role. I enjoy rolling up my sleeves alongside my fellow trustees to tackle some challenging issues with our combined skill sets. I particularly enjoy working on the new People sub-committee and I can sense a renewed enthusiasm for finding ways to optimise the Trustee contribution.' 

Trustees will be required to complete an induction to the organisation and the Board. This will include site visits and meetings with the CEO, Senior Management Team, Chair and Board members. 

Time commitment 

The Board meets quarterly on Wednesdays from 6.00 – 8.00pm in East London.

In addition to the full Board meetings, the Finance Committee meets quarterly on Thursdays from 6.00 – 8.00pm in East London, the People Committee meets quarterly on Mondays from 6.00-7.30pm online, and the Service Development Committee meets quarterly online (regular days/times tbc). 

The new finance trustee will be expected to attend Finance Committee meetings. 

Travel expenses can be reimbursed. 

Board members may be asked to commit additional time to support staff recruitment, review tenders and share expertise. 

The agenda and papers for each meeting are usually emailed to Trustees a week in advance

Appendix 1 

Trustee role description 

Purpose of the role 

The Board is responsible for the governance of the organisation, supporting the Chief Executive to ensure things run smoothly and effectively You will be supporting our 75 members of staff and part of our 90+ strong volunteer team. You will also have the opportunity to learn about how to tackle the challenges that our beneficiaries face, and how to deliver appropriate co-produced services that enrich older people’s lives and enhance the whole community of East London. 

Trustee Main tasks 

• Make decisions for the benefit of Age UK East London, exercising independent judgement and declaring any interests, exercising reasonable skill, care and diligence in carrying out activities. 

• Contribute to Board meetings, helping to give firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting policy and targets and evaluating performance. 

• Be familiar with the rules that govern Age UK East London (Articles of Association) and make sure we follow those, Charity Law, Company Law and all other relevant legislation and regulations., training and support is available. 

• Ensure the organisation’s financial stability, overseeing the setting of the budget and monitoring variance against the budget (the Board also has a Finance Sub-Committee to help oversee this). 

• Ensure that we use our resources in line with our Articles and the requirements of 

funders, and that our accounts are a ‘fair and true’ representation of our finances. 

• Safeguard the values of Age UK East London a maintain positive reputation for the organisation and its work. 

• Contribute to a subcommittee that best suits your knowledge.

Appendix 2 

Finance Trustee role description 

Purpose of the role 

To support the Treasurer and Board in overseeing the financial operations of the charity in line with good practice, the Articles of Association and legal and reporting requirements.

Main tasks 

• Liaise with the Treasurer Director of Finance and Operations (or other appropriate member of staff) and support on financial matters 

• Support the Board to monitor the financial viability of the charity. 

• Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan. 

• Review the annual accounts in liaison with the Treasurer and Director of Finance and Operations 

• Review the annual budget and management information in liaison with the Treasurer

• Ensure close working relationships with the internal Finance Department and Finance subcommittee. 

• Deputise for the Treasurer at Finance subcommittee and main board meetings 

• Assist the Treasurer and the Director of Finance and Operations to ensure that sound financial management is maintained in line with our Financial Procedures and related policies.

Finance Trustee

 

Are you interested in becoming a voluntary Finance Trustee? We are looking for an experienced and committed individual to play an essential role in the governance and development of a hospice charity dedicated to supporting people with terminal and life limiting illnesses.

 

Position: Finance Trustee (voluntary)

Location: Remote, with travel to Swindon

Time commitment: Trustees are asked to participate in quarterly Board meetings, preferably in person. Plus Trustees are asked to participate in and/or Chair, preferably in person, at least one Sub-committee. Meetings of these sub-Committees are held once every quarter. Trustee are also asked to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Hospice.

Remuneration: The position is unpaid, though reasonable expenses (such as travel to meetings) are reimbursed.

The Role

It is the duty of the Board of Trustees to act in the interests of the Charity’s beneficiaries. It should ensure that the Charity as a clear strategic direction and purpose, and a sense of urgency to get on with the work it was established to do. It should set clear objectives, establish priorities, safeguard the assets (money, property, equipment, human resources) and use them effectively and exclusively to benefit those Charity exists to help.

 

Some of the main key responsibilities include:

· To ensure that the charity complies with its Memorandum and Articles of Association, Charity law, Company law and any other relevant legislation.

· To ensure the charity applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects.

· To contribute actively to the Board’s role in giving firm strategic direction to the charity.

· To ensure the financial stability of the charity.

· To appoint the Chief Executive and monitor their performance.

· To assist in the recruitment and selection of potential new Trustees.

· To contribute as a member/chair of a committee reporting to the Board

 

About You

You need not have been a charity trustee before, although experience of charity governance and working as part of a committee would be highly beneficial. You will need to have great inter-personal/people skills and the time to perform the role effectively.

We are also seeking the following essential skills and experience for this role:

 

· A qualified Accountant with extensive professional experience within a finance based role

· Experience of contributing to senior/executive level board discussions

· Experience in development and delivery of business plans in line with strategic planning

· Experience of chairing meetings and/or events

· An understanding or developing partnerships and building relationships with other organisations

Secretary/Trustee

Who we are:

We are a long-standing (33 years) local charity, based in Ashford, providing friendly advice, companionship and volunteering opportunities for anyone in our part of Kent who is socially isolated, lonely, or would welcome support with their mental health and wellbeing. We arrange 3 free drop-in sessions per week at Ashford Parish Rooms, at which our service users participate in a wide range of activities including crafts, singing and art therapy. We also offer food and beverages from our pop-up healthy eating café and dedicated door-to-door transport where required.

Due to an upcoming retirement we are now seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. 

About the Role:

The Secretary will be responsible for the smooth and efficient running of meetings of the Trustee Board, providing assistance and support to the Chair. They will also be involved in monitoring compliance to the legal and regulatory requirements affecting the charity and its activities, and ensuring that the Trustees’ decisions are acted upon and that all decisions made by the Trustees are in accordance with the governing document, reflect the objects of the charity, and continue to provide public benefit. They will liaise with the Chair and the charity team to ensure that events such as the AGM and Trustee Board meeting are scheduled and administered, with accurate minutes taken and circulated and agreed action points implemented.

It is expected that all Trustees will be able to attend our Trustee meetings in Ashford, which are held at least once a quarter, as well as the AGM and ideally a small number of other functions eg fundraising events.

 

Skills & Experience:

We’re a small charity, punching above its weight – can you help us to maintain and increase our reach and impact?

Our partner is an international peacebuilding organisation, inspired by the Christian faith, working in societies affected by violent conflict to promote the power of peaceful relationships and creating space for them to thrive.

They are seeking a Trustee to chair their finance sub-committee, with experience in a senior finance role who is able to help them develop their approach to finance and support them in the move towards cloud-based accounting.

Kintsugi Hope is a charity based in the UK striving to make a difference to peoples mental wellbeing.

"Kintsugi' (金継ぎ) is a Japanese technique for repairing pottery with seams of gold. The word means 'golden joinery' in Japanese. This repairs the brokenness in a way that makes the object more beautiful, and even more unique than it was prior to being broken. Instead of hiding the scars it makes a feature of them.

We want to see a world where mental and emotional health is understood and accepted, with safe and supportive communities for everyone to grow and flourish.

A Kintsugi Hope Wellbeing Group is a safe and supportive space for people who feel or have felt overwhelmed, providing tools for self-management in a facilitated peer mentoring style setting.

It consists of a structured yet flexible series of 12 weeks of content, which includes group and individual activities designed to help participants to accept themselves, to understand their value and worth, and grow towards a more resilient and hopeful future.

The role of the Group Leader is to facilitate the sessions using the material available, signposting people if necessary to further help and support. It can feel vulnerable and scary starting a group, but the benefit of a Kintsugi Hope Group is that Group Leaders are not on their own.

Issues covered include; disappointment, loss, anxiety, anger perfectionism, shame and resilience. Feedback so far has been amazing.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people with the specific skills described in the Person Specification (below), including at this time people with the financial skills to be a Treasurer, safeguarding skills and fundraising skills. To ensure that our board is as diverse as possible we are particularly keen to receive applications from groups that are under-represented on the board. Particularly young people, people with disabilities, or who experience physical or mental concerns.

• Significant experience and expertise in either finance (Treasurer position) adult safeguarding (trustee responsible for safeguarding), fundraising or other skills that will enhance the board.​

What’s involved in being a trustee

• The Board of Trustees meet four to five times a year. Once or twice a year on a Saturday for vision and impact days and three times a year online between 7pm and 9.30pm on different evenings.
• Trustees are asked to take on specific roles, for examples on committees or working parties, and asked to attend additional meetings if necessary.
• All trustees are expected to participate in discussions, provide opinions and make decisions as required.

Contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of support and inclusion for the Neurodivergent community.

Our purpose:

We are a brand new nonprofit, grassroots charity, currently in its founding stages. We are recruiting trustees to become part of our innovative, changemaking governing body to grow Neuroverse into a leading force for neurodivergent support and empowerment.

Trustees have collective responsibility for the governance of the organisation and for all decisions made by the Board. We are looking for people who want to help their local community and work towards the eradication of food poverty whilst supporting the food bank to continue to provide emergency food to people who find themselves in crisis. Our ideal candidates would demonstrate:

Role Summary:

The Chair of the Board of Trustees will provide strategic leadership to Hidayah, ensuring the organization remains aligned with its mission to support and advocate for LGBTQ+ Muslims. The Chair will guide the Board of Trustees in effective governance and act as an ambassador for the charity within both the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Leadership and Governance:
   • Provide leadership to the Board, ensuring that Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity.
   • Oversee the Board of Trustees’ operation, ensuring its members work collaboratively and effectively.
   • Ensure the charity complies with its constitution, governing documents, charity law, and other relevant legislation/regulations.

1. Strategy and Planning:
   • Lead the development and implementation of the charity’s annual strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the needs of LGBTQ+ Muslims.
   • Write the annual report outlining Hidayah’s impact and achievements
   • Work with the Board of Trustees to ensure that strategic objectives are effectively executed and serve the community
   • Write and develop a portfolio of policies to ensure the smooth running of Hidayah

1. Board of Trustees Management:
   • Chair monthly Board meetings effectively, ensuring decisions are taken in a timely manner and that actions are followed up.
   • Facilitate a positive and inclusive Board culture where diverse viewpoints are encouraged and respected.
   • Manage all volunteers taken on by Hidayah

1. Advocacy and Representation:
   • Act as an ambassador for the charity, promoting its work within both the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities and to a wider audience.
   • Represent the charity at key events, meetings, and functions, and develop relationships with key stakeholders and partners.

1. Financial Oversight:
   • Oversee the charity’s financial health, ensuring it operates within its means and maintains proper financial control and accountability.
   • Work with the Treasurer and the finance team to ensure the Board of Trustees receives accurate and timely financial information.
   • Act as a signatory for Hidayah’s bank account and financial operations.
   • To seek out partnerships, sponsors and endorsements from individuals and organisations.

1. Risk Management:
   • Ensure appropriate risk management policies and procedures are in place and adhered to.
   • Regularly review and address potential risks to the charity’s operations and reputation.

 

Person Specification:

Essential:

• Demonstrable experience in a leadership role within a charity, non-profit, or similar organization.
• Strong understanding of governance best practices and charity law.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive culture.
• Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans.
• Strong financial acumen and experience overseeing budgets and financial planning.
• Passion for the charity’s mission and commitment to its values, with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ Muslims.

Desirable:

• Previous experience as a Chair or in a senior non-executive role.
• Experience in fundraising and development activities.
• Established network within the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities and among relevant stakeholders.

Terms of Appointment:

• The Chair will be appointed for an initial term of 3 years, which may be renewed for a further term(s).
• This is a voluntary position; however, expenses incurred in fulfilling the role will be reimbursed as approved by the Board of Trustees in line with Hidayah’s policies.

Abortion Talk is at an exciting time in our short history. We’ve been running for three years now, and we’ve successfully established our volunteer-led Talkline service, and developed a range of workshops. Now it’s time for us to focus on developing our services, improving our infrastructure and growing our income, so that we can build on our early successes and do even more to challenge abortion stigma. 

We’ve recently developed our first three-year strategy, which sets out our objectives for this next phase in Abortion Talk’s history. To help us put this plan into action, we need people on our board with the skills, values and time to help us achieve our ambitious goals for the future. Following an audit of our current board members’ skills, we’re recruiting:

• A treasurer. 

• A trustee with a digital services background, to help us develop our Talkline. 

• A trustee who can support our business development and income generation from sales, to provide strategic leadership on the sale of our workshops and diversifying our income away from time-limited grants. 

• A trustee with a background in volunteer management and strategy. Experience in growing a small charity would be a bonus.

What being on the board involves 

All Abortion Talk trustees are responsible for ensuring that we: 

• focus on our objective to end abortion stigma, overseeing the implementation of our three-year strategy. 

• comply with our governing document (i.e. our charitable objects), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulation.

• apply our resources only in pursuing our charitable objects and for the benefit of the public.

• evaluate the success of our three-year strategy against agreed targets.

• protect the pro-choice, feminist and inclusive values of our charity. 

• effectively govern the charity, which includes making sure we have the proper policies and procedures in place. 

• ensure financial stability.
