Charity Treasurer Volunteer Roles

We are a local charity providing social welfare advice, information and support, through a wonderful team of paid staff and volunteers and we are looking to appoint a new Treasurer to join our board and help steer the organisation in the right direction.

In 2023/24 we:

• Helped over 15,000 clients to find a way forward with their problems

• Dealt with over 37,000 separate issues for those clients

• Gained just under £2M of extra income for clients to help during the cost of living crisis

We are seeking someone who can represent the different Cheshire West communities and has the energy and enthusiasm to help us achieve our goal of improving people's lives.  Age, background, origins or health conditions are no barriers for joining our team of trustees as we are actively looking to include a variety of different perspectives on our board to best serve our community. 

Prior experience as a charity treasurer is not necessary but we are looking for someone who has financial qualifications or experience and has some knowledge or experience of charity finances, fundraising, financial consequences and pension schemes.

You will need to be available to attend at least 5 board meetings a year (in person and remote), often in the evenings, plus one trustee development day each year and there are many opportunities for further involvement. The post of treasurer is a voluntary one but all reasonable expenses are reimbursed.  Volunteering should not affect state benefit entitlement.

The Let’s Play Project is a highly regarded and professionally run charity in Banbury, Oxfordshire, that provides play and leisure opportunities to disabled young people between the ages of 5 and 25. We are looking for a Treasurer to join our board of trustees who all unpaid volunteers.

We meet 4 times a year as a Board and undertake a broad range of projects (big and small) in the interim. You will also be chairing a Finance subcommittee that meets to regularly to focus on details of the charity finances.

EnhanceAble’s mission is to impact positively on the lives of local disabled people and their families through the provision of excellent social care.  We pride ourselves on going the extra mile in provision of service and placing our customers at the centre of our work.

EnhanceAble is a medium-sized charity in the social care sector.  We have a turn over of circa. £2 million per annum.  We have a Board of Trustees, and a Senior Management Team (SMT) consisting of our Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executive, Head of Finance and HR Manager.

As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer maintains an overview of EnhanceAble’s financial affairs. The Treasurer ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and, along with the Head of Finance, reports to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.

Treasurer role

• Working with the Head of Finance on the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees. 

• Ensuring, at a board level,  that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place. 

• Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity. 

• Overseeing financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with the Chief Executive and Head of Finance. 

• Being knowledgeable of the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process 

• Ensuring investments and assets are maximised.

• Working with the Head of Finance to oversee the development and implementation of systems for appraising, mitigating and reporting corporate risk. 

• Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies, for example, the Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies.

• Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the Chief Executive to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees.

What we are looking for

• A finance professional. A knowledge of charity finance is an advantage. Otherwise an enthusiasm to learn, drawing from sound commercial experience and an understanding of SMEs.

• A strategic thinker with the ability to balance risk and opportunity.

• Clear communicator with the ability to bring financial information alive to non-finance specialists. 

• Willing to play an active role in areas such as forecasting, setting budgets, liaising with auditors

• Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

• Oversee EnhanceAble’’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress. 

• Quality assures the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.

• Review and approve EnhanceAble’s financial statements.

• Provide support and challenge to EnhanceAble’s CEO and Head of Finance in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.

• Keep abreast of changes in EnhanceAble’s operating environment.

• Contribute to regular reviews of EnhanceAble]’s own governance.

• Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.

• Use independent judgement, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect EnhanceAble’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.

• Contribute to the broader promotion of EnhanceAble’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

Terms of appointment

Terms of office

• Trustees are appointed for a 3 year term of office, renewal for 3 further terms to a maximum of 12 years.

• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Time Commitment (Estimated at 10 hours per month)

• Attending 4 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held in person at our head office KT1 2TW

• Monthly scheduled meeting with the Head of Finance with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.  Other members of the senior management team will join some of these meetings.

• Attending a number of training and strategy sessions plus some events. 

Our partner is a women’s organisation, delivering systems change and trauma and gender-informed community-based support for women and girls affected by domestic abuse, including those in contact with the criminal justice system.

The Treasurer will oversee the financial matters of the charity in line with good practice and legal requirements, and report to the Board of Trustees at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation. They will ensure that effective financial management systems, controls and procedures are in place, and are appropriate for the charity’s needs.

The successful candidate will have experience of operating within a board in a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation, as well as a commitment to feminist principles and a passion for ending violence against women.

The board meets 5 times per year, and the finance sub-committee has an additional 4 meetings annually.

New Horizons are looking for a new Treasurer to join their dedicated and friendly Board of Trustees.

Role Summary

The Treasurer will help trustees to carry out their financial responsibilities and this involves working with the Director and Chair to -

• present financial reports to the board in a format that helps the board understand the charity’s financial position

• work with professional advisors including the accountant
• work with the Director, Chair and accountant to oversee the preparation and scrutiny of annual accounts
• work with the Director to help prepare budgets and financial reports.

Raising Futures Kenya supports young people in Kenya to become self-reliant and live free from poverty, through technical vocational training and business skills courses, and specialised support such as counselling. We are a small, award-winning charity who are actively shifting power to our Kenyan partner NGO.

Age UK Gloucestershire’s vision is to make our county the best place in the UK in which to grow older.

We are seeking a new Treasurer to join our board of trustees /directors and help us achieve our vision.

We are a small, independent Charity based in Gloucestershire with the aims to challenge negative stereotypes of ageing, create positive age-friendly communities, help older people retain a sense of purpose, and offer help and support to older people and their families.

Overview of the role:

The Treasurer supports the Board with maintaining an overview of the charity’s financial affairs, as well as fulfilling the role of a Trustee/Board Director. The Treasurer assists the Chair and the CEO in ensuring that the board of trustees fulfils its duties and responsibilities for the proper financial governance of the charity; by ensuing effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are in place, reporting to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the Charity.

In addition to the above, the Treasurer will also have the responsibilities and qualities of all trustees.

Our partner works on the front line with families in need, with a vision of a world where children everywhere have access to the support they need to survive and thrive, achieved through research, campaigning and humanitarian responses.

They are seeking a Treasurer with experience of working with not for profits in setting strategic financial direction. You would be joining the board at an exciting time, as they implement their new strategy, build on their campaigns and broaden their advocacy to mobilise greater support and achieve change.

In addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee, the responsibility of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation's affairs, ensuring its financial viability and that the organisation has policies and systems in place to ensure robust financial planning, implementation and reporting.

This is a substantial and responsible role, and would suit someone able to commit about 18-20 hours three times a year. Alike is a charity with one simple mission: To end the loneliness and isolation that people impacted by cancer experience. We exist to empower our community to make meaningful connections through seamless digital experiences which help people find their sense of belonging. We were created for people impacted by cancer, by people with cancer.

We're looking for a treasurer to join our scaling charity! About the Institute of Psychoanalysis

The British Psychoanalytical Society was founded in 1913. With around 500 members, we are a UK wide and international community of professionals, dedicated to helping people enhance their lives through an intensive talking therapy, psychoanalysis. The Institute of Psychoanalysis (IoPA) is the outward face and training body of the British Psychoanalytic Society.

About the role

The Honorary Treasurer is a Trustee of the Society, sharing collective responsibility with the Board for its strategic oversight. Key responsibilities include overseeing the Society’s finances and advising the Board on financial matters.

The Honorary Treasurer attends regular monthly finance meetings and monthly Board meetings (3rd Monday evening of the month), all currently held remotely. The Honorary Treasurer also attends the AGM, Informal Meetings and Board Study Days.

Additionally, the Honorary Treasurer chairs the Finance Sub Committee (FSC) of the Board, which provides key financial recommendations on the budget and other financial decisions, including investment advisor reports. They oversee financial management processes managed by the CEO and Head of Finance, making independent recommendations to the Board, with input from the FSC as needed. The Honorary Treasurer has responsibility to feedback advice from the FSC to the Board.

Principle duties

• On behalf of the Board ensure proper accounting records are kept and financial resources are properly controlled, invested and economically spent, in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
• As the Chair of the Finance sub-committee (FSC) of the Board and together with the FSC, support the Board and the Executive in their responsibility for ensuring a sound approach to financial decisions.
• Act as a counter signatory in line with the organisation’s delegation of authority.
• Serve as the Board’s liaison with external auditors on specific issues such as the auditors’ management letter, remuneration and related board representations.
• Inform Society members on relevant financial matters, including notification of annual dues and presenting annual accounts with the Head of Finance.

We are seeking a Treasurer with senior-level, strategic financial expertise to join our Board – this volunteer role will appeal to someone wishing to use their skills and experience to help improve the lives of thousands of people across our city.

The world's first bricks-and-mortar museum dedicated to vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy are recruiting a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. 

As Treasurer, your responsibilities will be: 

• Attend monthly Board meetings and an annual planning day
• Fundraising
• Fulfilling administrative, financial and legal requirements
• Willingness to familiarise yourself with the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

The majority of responsibilities can be carried out remotely, although occasional in-person meetings in London are required and we encourage trustees to visit the museum and meet their fellow trustees and the wider team of staff and volunteers.

The Vagina Museum holds and promotes the values of equality, diversity and inclusivity and we are seeking trustees who would be ambassadors to these values. The purpose of this role is to monitor the financial administration of The Bridge and advise the Board and CEO on financial matters, in line with best practice and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements.
