We Stand are recruiting a number of Board of Trustee Volunteers.

We Stand is the only national charity that specialises in helping non-abusing parents and carers to protect and support their sexually abused children.

Our Mission is to provide support in a non - judgmental environment for non abusing parents and carers of sexually abused children. 

Our Services help families at a time of extreme trauma caused by child sexual abuse – providing emotional and practical support to young victims, siblings and non-abusing parents/carers so that they can move on positively with their lives together. 

We are in exciting times as we develop new services across the UK and have recently launched a new program of work in Wales.

We Stand is run by a Board made up of Trustees. We are seeking committed and passionate individuals, we are  particularly interested in applications from those with the following experience but also we are interested in applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences, to support our work. 

• Charity finance/funding experience - Individuals with day-to-day experience of setting and managing charity budgets. 

• HR experience 

• Legal experience, ideally experience within family law. 

Previous board experience not required

Expectations

• Actively participate in board meetings (which occur once every 6 weeks, on Tuesday evenings), and working groups where required 

• Oversee the strategic direction of the organisation, supporting its development through good governance

• Use personal skills, expertise and time to support the organisation’s development

• Undertake tasks required by the Board from time to time - such as recruitment

The Trustee Board is crucial to the successful running of the Home-Start Southwark. The Board, in partnership with the CEO and senior executive team, ensures that the organisation operates effectively, setting its strategic vision and supporting the delivery of business plans and key objectives. The Treasurer role is to oversee the charity’s financial and risk management processes; monitor the charity’s income, outgoings and cash-flow forecasting; and maintain a strategic overview of the organisation’s financial resources.

SAT-7 UK is a registered charity (no 1060612) which seeks to see a growing Church in the Middle East and North Africa, confident in Christian faith and witness, serving the community and contributing to the good of society and culture.  SAT-7 UK is part of an international Christian media ministry. Through our partnership with SAT-7 International, we are bringing life-changing joy to the people of the Middle East & North Africa through powerful, faith-filled television and digital media programmes, supported in the UK through mobilising prayer, raising SAT-7’s profile, generating financial support and fostering a deeper understanding and engagement.

Its board of Trustees are responsible for the overall governance, monitoring and strategic direction of the charity to ensure that the charity fulfils the objects defined in its articles and acts in accordance with the charity’s vision and mission, and in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. The trustees have delegated the overall management of the charity to the CEO. The CEO has recruited a staff team with specific responsibility for implementing strategy.

Meetings of the trustees are held quarterly and are used to review progress, set objectives, establish policies, as well as other issues of relevance.

Role Description – Treasurer to the Board of Trustees  

The Board of Trustees recognise that charity governance is a balanced relationship between the employed staff; the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership team, and the Board of Trustees. Together they are responsible for directing the affairs of the charity, ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and delivering the intended charitable benefits. 

A key role in the effective governance of the financial affairs is that of the Treasurer among the charity Trustees. While financial matters are the responsibility of all Trustees, the Treasurer takes special responsibility for all aspects of the charity’s financial management and reporting. 

An overview of the role of Treasurer is:

• monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees, in compliance with the governing document.

• oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process; 

• act as a counter signatory per the bank mandate; and 

• provide board-level liaison with the external auditors on specific issues such as the Auditors’ Management Letter and the related board representations. 

In addition to the normal responsibilities of a Trustee the Treasurer will:

• oversee budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements before presentation to the Board of Trustees; 

• ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly invested and economically spent; 

• liaise with the Chief Executive and Operations Director as appropriate;

• chair the Finance and General Purposes (FGP) committee and report back to the Trustees; 

• monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity; 

• oversee the implementation of and monitor financial systems; 

• advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan;

THE OPPORTUNITY

SHELTERBOX IS LOOKING TO RECRUIT 2 NEW TRUSTEES TO JOIN OUR BOARD.

Over the last four years, ShelterBox has seen uninterrupted growth, reaching a record-breaking income figure of £22 million in 2022. Historically, the organisation’s financial resources have surged in line with high-profile disasters and public response. Therefore, it is vital that we continue to build strategies that focus on developing predictable funding growth and ensure we have a sustainable and diverse income profile globally.

As a global organisation, we are seeking applications from across the world, particularly from the global south and from individuals with protected characteristics. We are especially actively seeking applications from people who may be typically excluded or are underrepresented or absent from boards and charity governance. This is a fantastic opportunity to use your skills and experience – including lived experience – to support ShelterBox to deliver its strategic goals.

You will be part of a global team working to ensure that no one is without shelter after disaster. Our values run through everything we do. They are the principles that guide how we approach our work with the people we support, our volunteers, and our staff.

Tanzania Development Trust (TDT) works in some of the poorest parts of Tanzania, helping people to lift themselves out of poverty by funding small projects that meet their essential needs.  

It sponsors 40-50 small rural development projects p.a. in Tanzania, mainly in the areas of clean water, girls' education and small income generating activities. It also has 3-4 larger, longer-term projects. Its primary function is fundraising, although it provides general project management and business advice where appropriate. 

Around half of its income comes from individual donors, and half from Trusts & Foundations. It helps villagers in Tanzania who lack the capacity and language skills to present their projects to international donors, conducting project appraisals and monitoring project outcomes on their behalf. The projects are implemented by the villagers themselves, or by small local contractors.

TDT is run entirely by volunteers (17 regular volunteers in the UK and 16 local representatives in Tanzania). It has no paid staff, premises or overheads, so 100% of all money raised goes directly to projects in Tanzania.

We are looking for additional Trustees who can help us to grow by identifying potential donors, increasing awareness of our activities, and strengthening our project selection and monitoring procedures.

We would like at least one of the new Trustees to help us with fund-raising by piloting more innovative and creative approaches. Experience of living or working in Tanzania is not essential, but to improve the Board’s racial diversity we would like at least one of the new Trustees to be of Tanzanian origin or have strong connections with East Africa.

The Trustees are all unpaid. Although their main job is the overall direction of the business, they can become involved in day-to-day operations if they so wish. We all work remotely, which helps us to engage with our local representatives in Tanzania in everything we do.

The work we do is immensely rewarding. You would be joining a close-knit organisation that is growing and adapting to meet the needs of a changing world, where helping poor people to help themselves is of paramount importance.
