Job description

Play your part in shaping the future of the UK's leading charity for teenage musicians. Join the National Youth Orchestra as Chair of the Finance Committee and guide our financial strategy at a pivotal time for our ambitious growth.

What will you be doing?

Are you ready to play your part in shaping the future of the UK’s leading organisation for teenage musicians? The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) is seeking a strategic and passionate finance leader to join our Board of Trustees as the Chair of the Finance Committee.

NYO is the UK’s foremost organisation dedicated to using orchestral music as a powerful catalyst for teenage development. Each year, we engage thousands of teenagers, empowering them to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and positively impact their peers. With a strong financial foundation and ambitious growth plans, NYO is at an exciting juncture. Our diversified funding base, successful fundraising programme, and clear vision for expanding our impact over the next decade make this a unique opportunity to contribute to our continued success.

As Chair of the Finance Committee, you will play a pivotal role in guiding NYO’s financial strategy and ensuring the charity’s sustainability and growth. Your responsibilities will include providing high-level guidance on financial and resource planning, overseeing risk management, and ensuring compliance with all relevant financial regulations. You will work collaboratively with the wider Board to keep them informed of financial matters at an appropriate level of detail, contributing to the charity’s overall governance and strategic direction.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking an accomplished finance professional with the following skills, experience, and qualities:

  1. Financial Expertise: You should be a qualified Accountant (or possess equivalent experience) with substantial expertise in strategic financial management. Experience within the charity sector is highly desirable, including a strong understanding of charity governance, financial regulations, and the Charity SORP.
  2. Strategic Thinking: Proven experience in developing and implementing long-term financial strategies that align with organisational goals. You should have a track record of providing high-level financial oversight, with the ability to think creatively and offer innovative solutions to financial challenges. A balanced approach to risk-taking and the ability to drive change and improvement within an organisation are essential.
  3. Governance and Compliance: You must possess a deep understanding of governance best practices, including the ability to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and maintain high ethical standards. Experience in overseeing financial policies and procedures that ensure effective governance and accountability is crucial.
  4. Leadership and Collaboration: Strong leadership qualities with the ability to engage and work collaboratively with the Board, senior management, and other stakeholders. You should be able to communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively, enabling informed decision-making at the governance level.
  5. Commitment to NYO’s Mission: A genuine passion for NYO’s mission to empower young people through music, with a commitment to our strategic objectives. You should align with our values and demonstrate a strong interest in contributing to the organisation’s success and impact.
  6. Time Commitment: Willingness to dedicate the necessary time to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, including attending quarterly Board and Finance Committee meetings, preparing in advance, and participating in other NYO activities as needed.

What difference will you make?

As Chair of the Finance Committee, your leadership will be instrumental in securing the financial future of NYO, ensuring that we can continue to offer life-changing opportunities to young musicians across the UK. By guiding our financial strategy at this critical juncture, you will help us achieve our ambitious growth plans, ensuring that we remain financially robust while expanding our reach and deepening our impact on the lives of thousands of teenagers.
