Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only UK charity specifically dedicated to supporting older vegans and vegetarians. VfL has experienced sustained growth and impact since it was formed in 2007 and is highly respected for the breadth and quality of its work across care, advocacy, and catering sectors.
To prepare for changes in our board membership during 2025 we are seeking new trustees. Experience of business development including income generation would be particularly welcome.

The role of trustee is a voluntary one although expenses are paid when incurred in connection with the role. The board meets quarterly, mainly via video conferencing but with at least one meeting a year in Manchester where VfL is based. Full board meetings are held on a Saturday. Some communications occur between meetings (usually by WhatsApp or email) and occasionally additional (short) meetings are required to make decisions timeously – these will always be scheduled by arrangement with members.

Role Description: Trustee
To be a Trustee of an organisation is an exciting and fulfilling role and the most effective Boards are ones which benefit from individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets.
The role of a Trustee is to ensure that GFS fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries and delivers on our vision, mission and values.
Key Responsibilities
The statutory duties of a trustee are:
• To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document (articles of association).
• To ensure that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
• To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives - the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives.
• To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
• To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
• To ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
• To protect and ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds.
• To appoint the Chief Executive and monitor their performance.
• In addition, with other trustees, to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:

The Board of Trustees are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the impact of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.
Beyond the statutory duties of GFS, we ask that our trustees take a supporting role within the organisation to help drive the delivery of the strategy and support the team. This could include activities such as chairing committees/working groups, mentoring members of the team or actively supporting meetings with potential funders for example.

The Role:
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a talented, collegiate and unified Board.
The Chair will hold the Board and Executive Team to account for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, mission and vision, providing inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance and advancement of the Charity’s purpose and values.
The Chair will also support the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the entire Executive of the charity to achieve the agreed objectives. They will act as an ambassador of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, in partnership with the Chief Executive.
Person Specification:
In addition to the qualities required of a Trustee of the charity, the Chair must also meet the following requirements:
- Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation.
- Successful track record of achievement through their career.
- Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a board of Trustees.
- Significant experience of chairing meetings, events, committees or boards; recognising and leveraging the strengths of the collective, ensuring all voices are heard and guiding decision making when there isn’t a consensus.
- Experience of external representation, delivering presentations and managing stakeholders.
Desirable
- Broad knowledge and understanding of the charity sector and current issues affecting it.
- Srong leadership skills, ability to motivate staff and volunteers and bring people together.
- Financial management expertise and a broad understanding of charity finance issues.

The Role

- Fundraising knowledge: Particularly in community fundraising, corporate fundraising, or securing support from trusts and foundations.
- Operational support: Knowledge of IT and/or HR to assist our senior management team in streamlining effective operations.
- Secretariat skills: An interest in keeping accurate minutes, papers, and actions for the Board, ideal for someone new to trusteeship who wishes to gain experience.
We also value:
- Strong connections within Barnet, such as links to local businesses, schools, faith groups, or local government.
- Experience in the youth sector, either as a service user, volunteer, or employee.

Your Role as a Trustee
As a Trustee, you will:
- Attend bi-monthly Board and sub-committee meetings.
- Act as an ambassador for YBF, helping to raise our profile and support fundraising initiatives.
- Provide guidance and advice in your area of expertise.
This is a voluntary role requiring a time commitment of up to 8 hours per month, including attendance at six Board meetings per year, typically held in the evening. Trustees serve a three-year term, renewable for a maximum of six years.

Our current Chair of Trustees, having been in post for ten years, has decided that now is the right time to step down from this role at our AGM in January.
We are therefore looking for the right person to lead the Trust into the future, to ensure that as we develop we are meeting the needs of both male and female residents while also supporting those in the community who call on our services.

Time commitment
The time commitment is flexible given the nature of the role. The Trustees meet bi monthly for Board meetings with sub committee meetings in between.
