The Welcome Centre is an independent charity providing crisis support in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. We run a large food bank operation providing practical support. We also have an in-house Advice, Guidance & Support team who work with the people accessing our food bank to help improve their longer term circumstances. Each year we support thousands of people in crisis in our community.
We have a small staff team working across two sites in Huddersfield, supported by more than 100 volunteers. We rely on the generosity of our community and partners to support our work.
Our Board of Trustees
Our Board is made up of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds. Together we set out the overall strategy, monitor progress against our targets and objectives and ensure that The Welcome Centre operates on a financially sound basis.
Trustees attend four meetings per year (usually held on Monday evenings), as well as an annual strategy day and our AGM. Most of us also take responsibility for particular areas of governance and lead one off development projects where appropriate. In addition, we encourage trustees to volunteer operationally if they can (occasional weekdays), in order to maintain a good understanding of what we do.
We are seeking committed and passionate individuals, we are particularly interested in applications from those with professional experience of Finance but also welcome applications from anyone who has empathy with The Welcome Centre’s vision including individuals who may have lived experience of food or family crisis. If you feel you have skills and experience which may benefit our charity, we would love to hear from you.
You do not have to know everything. We will provide training, induction and support as well as a lively and stimulating environment and the opportunity to make a difference. Above all we are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals.

We are seeking four new trustees to become members of our board. Trustees ensure that the food bank acts in conformity with its purpose and with charity legislation, and that good governance, best practice policies and rigorous financial supervision are in place. They will be required to work collaboratively, with other trustees and with the staff and volunteers of the foodbank, and other external agencies.
Responsibilities:
- To help ensure, alongside other trustees, the effective governance and financial management of the charity in accordance with relevant legislation.
- To help set the strategic direction of the charity, and oversee progress against the objectives set.
- To prepare monthly and annual management accounts for the board and for the development manager to enable decisions to be taken with up to date and accurate information.
- To approve payments and ensure that suppliers and contractors are paid timeously.
- To ensure the foodbanks four staff are paid timeously, alongside pension and NI contributions.
- To ensure our charity is actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements.
- To help ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations.
- To help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and supporters and in the community.
- To act with integrity, care and skill, giving time, thought and energy to their role.
- To help ensure that the foodbank delivers an effective and compassionate service to all those who may need it in the South West of Glasgow, from whichever part of the community they come.
About you:
We are looking for people who share our commitment to delivering the best possible compassionate and non-judgemental service to some of the most disadvantaged people in Glasgow. Our ideal candidates would demonstrate:
- Clear commitment to supporting the delivery of the best possible compassionate and non-judgmental service to some of the most disadvantaged people in Glasgow.
- Some understanding of issues around poverty, even if not in depth, and willingness to extend that.
- Experience at a management, senior or professional level within the third, public or private sectors.
- (Ideally, but not essentially) experience of involvement in non-executive boards in the third, public or private sector.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Willingness to actively participate in discussions concerning the needs of the foodbank’s beneficiaries, staff, and volunteers.
- Willingness to act in the best interest of the charity.
- Integrity, sound independent judgement and an ability to think creatively.

The Role
We are looking for a qualified accountant with financial experience in the Charity sector. This person will sit on FARC, along with the Treasurer and other members of the Board.
Person specification
- Charity sector finance experience in either a staff or Trustee capacity.
- A qualified accountant and someone who has operated in a senior capacity previously.
- Committed to developing your knowledge and understanding of how VS is run, including engagement work with local or national services.
- Committed to supporting and promoting VS’s purpose, vision and mission.
- Understand and believe firmly in the work that we do and our values.
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills.
- A creative thinker and help VS develop innovative new areas of work.
- Committed to supporting VS values and equality, diversity and inclusion policy.

- Understanding of how a large organisation works.

About We Are Family
We Are Family is an extraordinary peer support community for adopters and prospective adopters. We’re there for parents throughout their adoption journey. Online and in person, our parents’ groups, events, resources, podcasts and talks offer mutual support, information and inspiration to adopters and those considering adoption. The Role
We are looking for new trustees to strengthen and enhance our board. The key responsibilities of the role include, governance, overseeing policy and direction, financial oversight and assisting with the leadership and general promotion of We Are Family to support the organisation’s Vision, Mission, Values and needs.
This is a voluntary opportunity with associated Trustee expenses - such as travel / childcare - covered by We Are Family. Trustees can be based anywhere in the UK.
Commitment
Trustee capacity to devote the time needed for the following is essential:

4 Board meetings per year

2 Board away days per year (on a Saturday)

Membership of at least one sub-committee (which also meet 4 times a year)
We estimate 8-10 hours for the charity per month. The duration of membership for a new Board member is for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of appointment for a further three year term.
Skills and Experience
All applicants should be able to demonstrate the following:

Be able to show high levels of professionalism and an ability to work collaboratively with others, including Trustees, our core team and the wider Volunteer network at We Are Family

Be well-organised, with good written and verbal communication skills.

Previous board/trustee experience is not necessary and we welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds. A thorough induction, and further trustee training as appropriate, can be provided.
