Being a Trustee

IRMO’s Board of Trustees is made up of six to nine Trustees, who work together to ensure the charity is run properly. As a trustee, you will have the opportunity to support IRMO’s strategic development and oversee its finances. Trustees meet every two months (usually online in the evening) and are asked to commit an additional eight to ten hours between meetings to follow up on actions and provide advice and input on strategic documents and areas of work relevant to their areas of expertise.

Specific responsibilities

● Ensure that the Board receives appropriate budgetary and financial information on the activities of the charity, and highlight any variances

● Help the Board to understand the charity’s financial position and whether its resources meet present and future needs

● Ensure that the Board is aware of, and advise the Board on how to carry out, its financial duties and responsibilities

● Oversee the preparation and scrutiny of IRMO’s annual accounts

● Ensure that robust financial policies, procedures and controls are in place and reviewed on a regular basis

● Set an appropriate reserves policy

● Review banking arrangements with the Director every three years

● Review and approve, as appropriate, transactions above the threshold set out in the Financial Controls Policy that require triple-approval

● Sign funding contracts and financial reports when required

● For the purposes of good financial governance, carry out bi-annual spotchecks on IRMO’s transactions and monthly reconciliation

What will you be doing as Honorary Treasurer/Trustee

The Trustee board is the principle governing body of CPRE London and is collectively responsible for the leadership and direction of the charity.

In addition to the expectations we have of all our Trustees, responsibilities would include: 

• Ensure our financial affairs are conducted within legal requirements, accounting regulations and good practice. 
• Submitting annual accounts to the Charity Commission, in liaison with the Honorary Secretary
• Assisting with funding applications  
• Oversee the financial sustainability and development of our charity.

Although keen to appoint dedicated Trustees offering a breadth of skills who share our aims, the Trustee board have identified experience and skills detailed below needed for this role: 

• Financial Planning and budgeting
• Preparation of financial reports
• Accountancy & Bookkeeping skills
• Experience with an environmental organisation or charity preferred but not essential.

To best represent London’s diverse community on our Boards of Trustees and ensure all residents benefit from our green space advocacy, we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. 

What difference will you make?

Opportunity to contribute financial expertise to underpin our new strategic plan and help steer the direction of CPRE London for the next 5 years. Your chance to influence through teamwork: working with the Director, financial volunteers and other trustees to ensure that the charity’s strategy is achieved and modified as necessary to embrace new ideas or changes in circumstances. 

Commitment:

Typically, 2-4 days a month with other trustees and staff in support of CPRE London and its key objectives, either at the office or remotely. There are 4 Board meetings a year at our London office, from 18.30, generally finishing by 20.30, plus an Away Day meeting in the Greater London area.

Action for Stammering Children (ASC) is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and suitably qualified person to join our Trustee Board as Treasurer to replace our current Treasurer who has sadly come to the end of his term. 

Who are Action for Stammering Children?

Action for Stammering Children is the UK charity for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the communities who support them. We are a small charity, founded in 1989, but one that punches above its weight and with Dr Ria Bernard, who joined us as Chief Executive in 2022, we have big ambitions! 

We’re here to make sure that every child who stammers has the support, respect and confidence to live the life they want to lead. 

We support and empower parents, caregivers and professionals; facilitate and champion research; and campaign for changes in policy and societal attitudes 

What do we do?

Information, community and support

We provide resources, advice and guidance for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the professionals who support them. 

Changing policies and attitudes 

We make sure the voices of children and young people who stammer are heard. We work with politicians and other decision makers to ensure the unique needs of children who stammer are reflected in public policy. But we know we can’t stop there. That’s why we campaign to challenge prejudices and misconceptions, seeking to change how society treats stammering and promote acceptance. 

Championing research 

We support and promote research into childhood stammering in order to build understanding and feed into our advocacy work, informing positive changes in policy and practice. 

Our team

ASC currently has a staff team of three (one of whom is part-time) but we hope shortly to recruit a part-time book-keeper and an events co-ordinator, in order to be able to deliver on our ambitious strategic objectives. 

Our Board of Trustees has been chaired by Dame Jane Roberts since 2021. With a number of trustees having come to the end of their term, we have had a number of trustees join the board recently including a new Company Secretary and two new trustees who had previously been members of ASC’s Youth Panel. With the Chair, the Company Secretary has been reviewing our governance to ensure that we conduct ourselves in line with best practice in charity governance. The Youth Panel is made up of young people who themselves stammer and who inform our strategic direction as well as engage in projects of their own. Our Annual Report for 2022-23 is available on the Charity Commission website, in addition to Trustees’ Reports for previous years. 

Executive and Non-Executive, we are a professional but friendly bunch who would extend a warm welcome to a new Treasurer as well as ensure that there was a generous handover period with the current Treasurer.

Who are we looking for as Treasurer?

We would like to attract a qualified accountant, perhaps still working, perhaps recently retired. You might have a personal connection to stammering but this is not required. Your interest, enthusiasm and experience are the most important.

Role description of the Treasurer

Purpose

• To monitor the financial matters of the organisation and report to the Board of trustees at regular intervals on its financial health in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements
• To oversee arrangements for risk management and ensure that these are adequate to organisational need, governance requirements and legal obligations.

Main responsibilities:

• Oversee the framework of internal controls and, in conjunction with the Company Secretary and Chair, the charity’s policies, procedures and delegated responsibilities in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements
• Oversee and review the preparation of budgets, management accounts and the annual financial statements, ensuring that they are brought regularly and in a timely manner to the Board 
• Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity, including the adequacy and use of charitable reserves and other funds
• Oversee the risk management framework, ensuring that the risk register is brought regularly to the Board for review
• Develop a working knowledge of the activities, services and products of Action for Stammering Children
• Provide advice and financial analysis to other Board members 
• Play a key role in the annual accounts, budgeting, cash flow and management accounts processes 
• Act as a liaison with the external auditors 
• Monitor the charity’s reserves and use of funds 
• Act as a counter signatory on all financial transactions and applications to funders when required

Overview of the role:

Fallowfield and Withington Foodbank are seeking someone with experience of working in a financial role to join the Board as a Trustee, who will be able to prepare accounts, advise on financial matters, ensure we meet our financial obligations and help us build a sound financial strategy as we move forward. As a Trustee you will share collective responsibility for the governance of Fallowfield and Withington Foodbank and all decisions made by the board, ensuring the organisation is well run, fulfils its mission, ensuring compliance with charity law and that the charity is open and accountable.

Responsibilities

All trustees are responsible for setting the strategic direction for Fallowfield and Withington Foodbank, ensuring alignment to our values, defining goals, setting organisational policies, agreeing financial plans, evaluating the charity’s performance and ensuring good relationships amongst the trustees and with the senior staff.

All Trustees:

• Ensure that the Foodbank has in place a clear strategy, plans, vision & values.
• Ensure that the charity is accountable, is actively complying with statutory reporting and accounting requirements and the law, and that financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined and made publicly available.
• Develop effective ways to communicate with staff, volunteers, beneficiaries, funders, partners and the wider public; encourage transparency and accountability.
• Help promote the Foodbank as widely as appropriate, including to audiences of potential funders and beneficiaries.
• Ensure appropriate financial plans and budgets are in place; monitor contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects.
• Ensure the Foodbank has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding, and data protection.
• Ensure an understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of equality, equity, diversity and inclusion.

Specific to the Treasurer Trustee:

• Oversee the financial affairs of the foodbank, ensuring that they are conducted with probity and transparency.
• Ensure the board receives sufficient information to carry out its financial responsibilities.
• Ensure that the charity has robust and effective financial controls.
• Ensure appropriate financial policies.
• Ensure an annual budget is provided for board approval.
• Prepare quarterly accounts for the board and annual accounts for the Charity Commission.
• Ensure that organisation risks are reviewed by the board annually.
• Be part of any sub-groups to the Board as appropriate

We are looking someone who wants to help their local community and work towards the eradication of food poverty whilst supporting the food bank to continue to provide emergency food to people who find themselves in crisis. Our ideal candidate would demonstrate:

• Experience of working in a financial role. However, previous experience as a charity treasurer is not essential.

Blue Ventures seeks a Treasurer with key finance and governance leadership, excellent communication skills, and a proactive, organized, innovative approach.

Who we are

Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organisation that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally.

The role

We are recruiting a Treasurer to lead our board’s oversight of Blue Ventures’ finances. This trustee position will chair our board’s finance subcommittee and provide high-level support to our finance team. Blue Ventures’ Treasurer will monitor our financial performance and position through a review of management accounts, cash flow, income streams, outgoing costs, and the overarching strategic management of the organisation’s financial resources.

The successful candidate will be a motivated, proactive, and highly organised individual who will demonstrate a proven track record of leadership in finance and leadership in governance, as well as exceptional written communications.

Wolfram Syndrome UK (WSUK)

WSUK is a small national charity based in West Sussex that supports children, young people and adults affected by Wolfram Syndrome (WS) and their parents/wider families. WS is an ultra-rare genetic disorder which causes a complex range of symptoms, including diabetes mellitus, vision problems, renal problems, deafness, and neurological problems. WSUK provides current, accurate and family-friendly information, raises awareness of WS among health professionals and the public, and helps to fund WS research. 

WSUK Treasurer

The WSUK Board is seeking to recruit a Treasurer to complement and extend the range of skills and experience of its current members. This voluntary role will maintain an overview of WSUK’s activities to ensure its financial viability and that proper financial procedures are maintained. Through active participation in quarterly Board meetings (on-line), this role will help WSUK to achieve its ambitions to continue to develop the activities and services it delivers to the WS community.

 Experience and skills:

The treasurer should have the following qualities:

· Financial experience. (e.g. as a Financial Director, Financial controller or qualified accountant).

· Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

· The Board meets around 4 times per year, held virtually in the evening.

We are looking for an individual with attention to detail and passion that aligns with the purpose of our charity and who can help to support our strategic direction and commercial success with a skillset that complements those of our existing Trustees.

We are looking for a Treasurer with proven experience in a relevant discipline, who can provide support with the following areas of effective financial management and control:

· Governance and control: Ensuring compliance with all relevant financial rules and regulations

· Budgeting and Monitoring: Ensuring the charity practices effective budgeting, reporting and monitoring protocols, with appropriate analysis and communication of potential risks to the sustainability of the charity

Most important to us, however, is having integrity, team-working ethic and a passion to help develop and grow our charity.

Preference may be given to individuals who are connected to our community and can have a presence on-site, but we are open to fully remote working for this role. 

Our partner is a specialist organisation run by women for women and children, providing impactful and high quality, accommodation-based help and intervention for women exposed to gender-based abuse and exploitation, and their children.

The Time Commitment

ICC requires all Trustees to attend 6 Trustee Board meetings each year and to participate in the same number of Committee meetings. Meetings of the Board normally take place early in the evening. There are occasional ‘away days’ and further duties, but the main responsibility outside formal meetings is to give support via email exchange. Formal meetings can be via Teams as well as in person.
