Alike is a charity with one simple mission: To end the loneliness and isolation that people impacted by cancer experience. We exist to empower our community to make meaningful connections through seamless digital experiences which help people find their sense of belonging. We were created for people impacted by cancer, by people with cancer.

Driven by our mission and inspired by the start-up mentality, we operate with agility and pace. In 2021, we launched our ground-breaking iOS and Android app as a space exclusively for the cancer community to connect. Now we’re looking to scale nationwide, and we need your help to do it. Alike is the only non-for-profit organisation providing a large scale, tailored peer support platform across all ages and diagnoses, whether someone’s facing a sleepless night or a lonely weekend.

We're looking for a treasurer to join our scaling charity! We are particularly interested in people who have demonstrable experience in finance, either evidenced by qualifications or experience (or both), as well as a good understanding of the charity financial landscape. Read more about what we are looking for in more detail below. 

Our Trustees:

Our board of trustees is essential to Alike’s mission. Working as a team, they take shared responsibility for maintaining alignment between our vision, strategy and day-to-day operations. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team, driving Alike’s growth, inspiring new approaches, and helping us scale. Their perspective, insights, passion and collective experience is crucial to our mission as we continue combating loneliness and isolation throughout the cancer community.

Your Responsibilities:

Joining our board of trustees is a commitment to Alike’s mission as well as our products. We need our trustees to not just believe in our potential, but to authentically champion it. Our ideal treasurer can clearly envision Alike taking a leading role in combating isolation in the cancer community - and in making a lasting, positive change. We’re looking for an active, engaged and experienced individual to join our existing board during this thrilling period of growth and innovation.

Beyond that, you would be required to collaborate on certain statutory duties (listed below), and to provide advice and guidance throughout Alike’s new initiatives. The power of our board lies in a diversity of viewpoints, so your unique combination of specialist knowledge, skills and experiences is key to success in this role.

We would expect you to contribute this set of skills to the board’s shared responsibility: making sound decisions for the charity’s direction. This would include - but by no means be limited to - scrutinising board papers, leading meetings, chairing discussions and taking an active role in board meetings.

Time Commitment:

• Regular board meetings (6 per year, 3 in-person meetings, 3 virtual)
• Additional time for sub-committee work and strategic planning
• Flexible availability for brief ad-hoc advisory calls or meetings
• Attendance at our Annual General Meeting in central London

Skills and Experience:

• An understanding of the challenges faced by those living with cancer and the impact of emerging technology in addressing these challenges
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative working style
• Excellent financial literacy evidenced by experience, qualifications or both!

We're looking for an Honorary Treasurer to join our valued Board of Trustees who will play a pivotal role in ensuring IPEM is well governed and complies with all financial legislation and good practice for charities. This is an exciting time to join IPEM, with an ambitious growth plan agreed for the next 5 years. 

The Honorary Treasurer chairs the Institute’s Finance and Business Planning Committee (F&BP), four meetings/year, normally held on line and is also a Trustee and Director of IPEM, attending the Board of Trustees’ four meetings/year, normally 2 in York and 2 in London. The Hon. Treasurer is a member ex officio of the Board of IPEM Enterprises Ltd, IPEM’s wholly owned trading subsidiary, which meets three times per year, usually by teleconference. The Hon Treasurer is also Chair of the IPEM Remuneration Committee which meets once a year by tele-conference.

We anticipate a commitment of 12 - 15 days per year with the meetings during the working day (9 - 5pm). 

You do not need to be a member of IPEM, though it is essential you have either senior voluntary sector finance experience or you are a qualified accountant. 

Oxfordshire Youth

Oxfordshire Youth is a boundary-breaking youth development charity, passionate about creating a future for and with young people that gives them the best possible opportunity to realise their potential. Oxfordshire Youth supports the youth sector across the county, working with grassroots leaders; it delivers innovative youth leadership programmes; and it provides a transformational supported accommodation service for young people. In everything it does, OY aims to meet the needs and aspirations of young people. All the charity’s work is grounded in best practice safeguarding and youth work principles and practice.

Charity Trustees

The Charities Act 1993 defined charity trustees as those responsible under the charity’s governing document for controlling the administration and management of the charity. This is the case regardless of the terminology used to describe the role. The trustee board at Oxfordshire Youth usually comprises up to twelve trustees, although there is no formal limit on the number of trustees, including the following roles:

● the Chair of the Board of Trustees

● the Deputy Chair and CEO Line-Manager

● the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance, Audit and Risk Sub-Committee

● the Safeguarding Lead and Chair of the Safeguarding,Quality and Impact Sub-Committee the People and Development Lead and Staff Liaison Trustee

The Role of the Board

At its most fundamental the role of the trustee board is to receive assets from donors, safeguard them and apply them to the charitable purposes of Oxfordshire Youth. The trustee board must always act in the best interests of Oxfordshire Youth, exercising the same standard of duty of care that a prudent person would apply if looking after the affairs of someone for whom they have responsibility. Trustees are ultimately and legally responsible for everything Oxfordshire Youth does. Trustees fulfil this responsibility by agreeing the strategy, agreeing organisational policies and implementing appropriate monitoring and control mechanisms to ensure and evidence compliance. Trustees appoint the CEO and, on recommendation by the CEO, appoint the Senior Leadership Team to manage all operational matters and the operational team in line with the approved strategy, policies and control mechanisms.

Duties of a Trustee

The statutory duties of a trustee are:

● Ensure that Oxfordshire Youth complies with its Articles of Association, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations

● Ensure that Oxfordshire Youth pursues its objects as defined in its Articles of Association

● Ensure Oxfordshire Youth applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects. For example, it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be

● Contribute actively to the board of trustees by giving firm strategic direction to Oxfordshire Youth, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets

● Safeguard the good name and values of Oxfordshire Youth

● Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organization

● Ensure the financial stability of Oxfordshire Youth

● Protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds

● Appoint the Chief Executive Officer and monitor performance

In addition to the statutory duties listed above, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, asking difficult questions and providing advice and guidance on new initiatives. Trustees must ensure that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.

Treasurer Role Purpose

To provide high level oversight of the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.

Key Responsibilities

● Attend bi-monthly Trustee meetings; chair bi-monthly Finance. Audit and Risk (FAR) Sub-committee meetings and report to the Board on financial matters. The first point of contact on the Board for any matters relating to Finance.

● Work with the Head of Finance, CEO, Finance, Audit and Risk Committee members and other Trustees to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.

● Support fellow Trustees to be aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.

● To have oversight of accounting policies, procedures, processes and record keeping including advising on best practice.

● Appraising the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.

● Sign off annually on the organisation budget and annual accounts.

● Lead on appointing auditors

● Work with Finance Lead, EO, Finance, Audit and Risk Committee members and trustees to set the financial strategy for the organisation.

Time Commitment

Trustees are expected to attend an induction session at Oxfordshire Youth prior to their first board meeting. Trustees are expected to attend the six annual board meetings, five of which last approximately three hours (typically 6-9pm). One meeting is an annual strategic planning board away-day or residential held each year. Papers, proposals and reports are distributed one week in advance of meetings. The Treasurer will also Chair the FAR sub-committee sub-committee which means 6 times a year for 2 hours.

Trustee Role Boundaries

Trustees in a decision-making capacity:

● As a board of trustees

● As a sub-committee

● Chair - delegated authority by the board to make decisions between board meetings with quorum of three, where necessary

● CEO Line Manager - delegated authority by the board to make decisions between board meetings where necessary

 Trustee roles outside of the above decision-making capacity:

Advisory role (i.e. offering advice in an area of expertise). In this capacity the Trustee is acting as Trustee but, as noted above, does not have decision-making capacity in their own right.

Volunteer role (i.e. participating in an operational working group). Here the Trustee is subject to the decision-making of the operational team-member who is in a position of authority. As a volunteer the Trustee is at liberty to withdraw.

Observer role (i.e. attending an OY workshop for young people or observing OY work). In this capacity they are acting as a Trustee but have no role beyond observing or information gathering for the purposes of strengthening their own understanding and / or board-level decision-making.

Champion role (i.e. spreading the message about the work of OY). In this capacity they are acting as a Trustee, helping to build the profile of the work of OY, with no decision making, but with the view of creating a positive image and sign-posting people to OY.

Who we are looking for

As a Treasurer, you will have:

● Knowledge and experience of current and fundraising and finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations.

● Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management (as necessary).

● Good financial analysis skills.

● Experience of advising others on financial matters, and being prepared to challenge

Each trustee should have:

● A commitment to the mission of Oxfordshire Youth

3. Represent Healthwatch Bucks with key stakeholders as required.

Financial Integrity

The Honorary Treasurer leads the Board in protecting the financial integrity of Healthwatch Bucks by:

● Chairing the Finance Committee and, on its behalf, making recommendations to the Board.

● Keeping the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities, ensuring understanding of financial planning and budgeting and current and forecast finances.

● Monitoring and reporting the organisation’s financial health regularly to the Board in line with best practice, complying with its Articles of Association, financial legislation, statutory requirements, contractual obligations and necessary insurance cover.

● Ensuring that the organisation has and complies with up-to-date financial policies and processes including Risk Management, Reserves, Business Continuity and Financial Management & Internal Controls.

● Monitoring cash flow to ensure financial sustainability.

● Ensuring that financial transactions and reporting meet the conditions of contractual and other agreements with commissioners, funders, partners and sub-contractors.

● Acting as signatory or co-signatory in accordance with the scheme of delegation in the Financial Management and Internal Control processes.

● Presenting the financial accounts at the Annual General Meeting and overseeing the preparation of the accounts for statutory submission.

Support & Guidance

The Honorary Treasurer shares the duty of all Board Members to ensure effective policy making, strategic planning and monitoring of the performance of Healthwatch Bucks. Additionally, the Treasurer has specific responsibilities supporting the Chief Executive to ensure that:

● Financial planning processes are maintained and that available financial resources are appropriate to the aims of the organisation.

● Healthwatch Bucks has an effective strategy for generating and accounting for commissioned and donated income to achieve its objectives and manage its expenditure.

● The Board receives all necessary advice on the financial implications of strategic plans and projects.

● The Board is presented with budget statements, management accounts and financial information at all key points in the planning and budget cycle and that issues are outlined in a coherent and easily understandable way.

The Financial Management and Control Policy is kept up-to-date and implemented throughout the organisation.

● Proper procedures are followed for preparing, presenting and filing the annual financial statements.

● The recommendations of external financial advisors are reported to the Board and acted upon.

● Equipment and assets are appropriately recorded, depreciated, maintained and insured.

Representation

The Honorary Treasurer will, as appropriate:

1. Liaise with staff and contractors responsible for the financial activities of the organisation.

2. Represent Healthwatch Bucks with commissioners and sub - contractors, partners, Healthwatch England, bankers and members.

3. Act as a spokesperson or signatory for the organisation.

4. Liaise with the independent examiner on the annual management letter and related Board representation.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our Board of Trustees as a Treasurer Trustee. The Treasurer Trustee will play a pivotal role in ensuring the financial integrity, sustainability, and accountability of NBR.

Key Responsibilities:

Budgeting and strategic financial planning

• Ensure all strategic plans are financially appraised and budgets are aligned to both short-term and long-term objectives each year.
• Oversee planning/budgeting processes in conjunction with the Board and constructively challenge and modify where required.

Statutory Financial Reporting

• Liaise with external agencies to create the annual accounts.
• Present the annual report and accounts to trustees for them to formally approve, ensuring they have been fully comprised of the contents.

Reserves Policy

• Safeguard the organisation’s finances.
• Regularly assess the charity’s reserves position, keeping the board informed and advising whether this needs modification if financial circumstances change.

In relation to Governance

• Lead the Board’s duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled, and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
• Chair finance committees in line with terms of reference and report findings/developments back to the Board of trustees.
• Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans and oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process.

Time Commitment:

• The board meets a maximum of 4 times a year and the Treasurer is expected to be available for all meetings, in person or virtual – dates agreed in advance.
• The Treasurer will Chair the Finance Sub-Committee which meets on an ad hoc occasion.
• The Treasurer will be expected to carry out financial duties as outlined above throughout the year, specifically preparing the Annual Report & Accounts and reporting all financial activities to the Board.

What difference will you make?

Balance (Support) CIO is creative and innovative charity providing a range of support services to people with learning disabilities and enduring mental health needs living in the boroughs of Kingston, Richmond, Wandsworth Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster.

The overall role of a treasurer is to:

In small charities without paid staff the treasurer may take a greater role in the day-to-day finances of the organisation.

About the organisation

One Place London is located in West London and is a community interest company engaged in Acting for Film and Music Recording workshops for young people aged 14-25, unemployed or at risk of getting involved in crime. 

The Neuroblastoma UK Board of Trustees is seeking a Treasurer.  This role is vital in ensuring best practice and excellent record keeping across our financial and fundraising activities.  It involves working closely with the rest of the board of between 8 and 12 Trustees to ensure the board has clarity on our financial position and availability of funds for our research grants.  It also involves working closely with our small team of smart and passionate employees who work to drive vital income to the charity.

The role of the Treasurer

• To oversee and present budgets, accounts and financial statements to the Board

The Charity holds 4 board meetings a year, with each lasting approx. 2.5 hrs, plus preparation time. Average of 4- 6 hours per month in addition for ongoing communications and decision making. As a Board member and therefore an ambassador of the Charity there will be fundraising and research events which we hope you show a willingness to attend, subject to your availability.

We want to improve the lives and environment of people living on the Hurst Farm Estate in Matlock, Derbyshire.  Local residents are working with us to achieve our mission through a range of practical outdoor activities including woodland management, a community garden, dry-stone walling and bee-keeping.  Our volunteer programmes help to improve skills and wellbeing for local people.  Our aim is to create financial sustainability through the delivery of viable social enterprises on Hurst Farm, which are owned and operated by local people.

We are working closely with Derbyshire Dales District Council on the delivery of the £1.2m National Lottery Heritage Fund funded Hurst Farm Heritage Trail project which is expected to run until the end of 2026.  The project aims to improve the existing footpaths around the Hurst Farm Woodland, connecting four heritage sites.

We are being mentored by The Green Estate Community Interest Company, who are using their 25-year experience of building successful national social enterprises on the Manor Estate in Sheffield.

We now need to recruit additional trustees to strengthen the Society’s existing Board which is responsible for areas such as governance, strategic planning, financial oversight, risk management and delivery of the organisation's mission and values.

We are looking for people who can offer knowledge, skills or experience in any of the following areas:

· Chairing an organisation

· Financial and budget management

· Woodland management and horticulture

· Running a forest school

· Applying for grant funding

· Management of volunteers

· Health and safety

· Marketing, communications and social media

· IT systems

· Social housing

· Local residents to act as a representative of the Hurst Farm community

Your experience may have been gained in the private, public and/or charitable sectors.

You do not need previous experience as a trustee.

All trustee roles are voluntary positions.

Board meetings are usually held in person in Matlock, however, remote access can be arranged where necessary.  We hold around eight Board meetings per year, each for a duration of two hours.

STARS Dorset is a growing, independent charity supporting those living, working or studying in Dorset who have been affected by sexual violence and/or domestic abuse.  We support approximately 3600 unique individuals every year with our specialist support services, enabling them to start their own journey of recovery. Introduction

CRRC is a registered charity with the primary object of supporting refugees and displaced persons in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. The charity is lead by the Board of Trustees of which the Treasurer is an ex-officio member. (S)he is subject to the decisions of the Board.

The role

The Treasurer will hold the CRRC’s Trustees to account for the Charity’s finances and vision, maintain financial control and ensure we comply with our legal responsibilities as a Registered Charity. The Treasurer will work with all members of the team to ensure that there is a transparent and clear financial process. As Treasurer to the Charity, you will also become a Trustee. Trustees are expected to understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship and understand their role as a Trustee.

The role is mainly online with occasional in person meetings in Cambridge. The expected hours will vary between 2 to 6 hours per week with a flexible working arrangement. The position is unpaid. Expenses incurred in undertaking the role will be reimbursed.

A competent treasurer or part-qualified bookkeeper or accountant would be ideal. Experience in the charity field is desirable but not essential.

Our bank is the Co-operative Bank. There is no branch in Cambridge, so all transactions are electronic or by post.

The duties of the Treasurer

1. Budgets The Treasurer co-ordinates the production of an annual budget, in conjunction with Group leaders. Details are kept on excel spreadsheets.
2. Financial Reports will be presented to the Board every quarter, setting out the income, expenditure and balance against budget at the end of each quarter. In addition to providing the Board with an overview of the financial position of CRRC, these reports should help the Board to understand trends and pressures and help the Board to understand how CRRC is using funds to support its objective.
3. Financial records These are now only kept electronically, using excel spreadsheets. The existing spreadsheets have been set up by the present Treasurer, but could be modified if improvements are considered advantageous.
4. Receipts are from various sources, as standing orders, bank transfers, cheques and through Kindlink, Paypal, CAF and payroll deductions. Cash is rarely used.
5. Gift Aid The treasurer is responsible for making claims for Gift Aid and for keeping Gift Aid forms.
6. Payments All payments must have signed off by a Trustee responsible for the budget heading. The vast majority are by bank transfer. Claims for payment are made on an electronic form to the Treasurer, who then sets up a bank transfer which is forwarded to the signatories for approval. This gives final authorisation for the bank transfer to take place. The Treasurer must check that the form is correctly filled in and the payment requested is in line with relevant e-mails and overall CRRC policy. A bank card is used for a limited number of specific payments. The number of payments varies each month. In 2022-23 there were 270 payments across the year.
7. Restricted and designated funds In addition to the main CRRC fund, there are currently 3 restricted/designated funds. These funds use the same bank account, but its transactions are recorded separately.
8. Annual accounts The Treasurer is responsible for producing annual accounts after the end of the financial year, which runs from 1 July to 30 June. These are then presented in draft to the Board before being submitted to an Independent Examiner. The Treasurer then passes the approved annual account summary to the relevant Trustee for submission to the Charity Commission (Annual report and financial accounts 2022.)

10. Supporting volunteers The Treasurer is also responsible for informing volunteers about the process for payments, including through relevant updates to process documents, and may be required from time to time to contribute to updated guidance for volunteers.

Additional notes

The current treasurer will be training the new treasurer and will remain available to support the new treasurer. The main reason for the stepping back of the current treasurer is to make time for the current treasurer to drive and oversee important changes and adaptations to facilitate the financial management of CRRC and to be more closely involved in the overall governance of our charity.

CRRC intends to adopt a digital payments system in 2024-25, in order to streamline the payment process for CRRC’s volunteers, budget approvers, bank signatories, and for the Treasurer. CRRC is also exploring changing the bank account.

It is possible that the number of restricted/designated bank accounts may be reduced.
