Job description

An appointment is offered for an individual with a background in finance, fund-raising and charity law.

Gatwick Aviation Museum is home not only to a unique collection of iconic aircraft and engines from the golden age of British aircraft manufacturing, but also to a range of exhibits and displays documenting and celebrating the world of aviation. It also has the expertise to maintain some of the aircraft in running order.

The museum is overseen by a Board of Trustees who hold ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of the Charity and ensuring that it is well run and delivers the charitable outcomes for which it has been set up. The operational function is devolved to the Museum Manager who co-ordinates a team of approx. fifty volunteers, who have diverse qualifications and experience and cover a variety of different functions within the Museum.

The hard work invested by everyone at the Museum has been rewarded with a record number of visitors during the last twelve months and we are on an exciting journey of continued improvement and growth.

Our current Board comprises five members, each of whom bring a wealth of experience to the Charity and we are now seeking to further strengthen the team with an individual who understands the governance role of a Trustee, particularly those who have previously held a Board level role. Board members have a collective responsibility, so it is important that Trustees always act as a cohesive group and not as individuals.  You should be willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.

We are a small Charity and Trustees may need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the Trustee has special expertise.
