About the Alec Dickson Trust

Alec Dickson together with his wife Moira, founded Voluntary Service overseas (VSO) and later Community Service Volunteer (CSV) as they passionately believed that anyone – whatever their background – could make a positive contribution to the world around them. Alec pioneered the involvement of young volunteers with backgrounds in offending, drug misuse and homelessness, built up a programme of community service work in schools, and campaigned vigorously for a nationwide community service. It was with this spirit of adventure and belief in young people that the Alec Dickson Trust was established after Alec’s death in 1994. Since then, the Trust has continued his legacy by awarding grants to young people with innovative community projects promoting volunteering up to the value of £500. 

Joining the Alec Dickson Trust

We are looking to recruit 2-4 trustees with a diverse set of skills and experiences. 

We welcome applications from disadvantaged/underrepresented groups and backgrounds outside of the charity sector. We are particularly interested to hear from first-time trustees and applicants with skills in fundraising and communications. 

There will be some flexibility in the exact nature of each trustee role, but we currently expect vacancies in the following areas: Fundraising and Communications – please let us know in your application if you want to apply for a specific role.

The Fundraising role will include developing and implementing the fundraising strategy, focusing on engaging and securing donations from public and private charitable bodies. The communications role will include developing and agreeing a social media strategy, creating content to promote the trust and extend our outreach and modernising our website.

Person Specification

Essential:

• A clear passion for volunteering to help make a difference to young people and communities across the UK.

• A willingness to review and challenge funding applications to ensure money is spent effectively.

• Preparedness to contribute to discussions and make difficult decisions

• A willingness to participate in committees in order to continually improve the Trust and grant-management process.

• Applicants can be from any background, with any qualifications or work experience, though we particularly welcome applications from individuals who have not previously been trustees.

Desirable:

Commitment

• Trustees attend approximately eight board meetings per year, typically held via Google meet.

• They are also expected to contribute two hours per week to support the Trust’s work.

• Trustees are expected to make a minimum commitment of 2 years in post.

Interviews

PCR at a glance 

In just a few short years we have achieved remarkable growth, expanding our income threefold from £1.5 million to £4.9 million in 2023-24 and have sustained this income in 2024-25. Guided by our vision to transform lives affected by prostate cancer, we remain committed to driving meaningful impact across our four core areas of focus:

Academic Research 

In 2024 we launched two new grant calls to tackle critical areas of unmet need: racial disparities in prostate cancer outcomes and advancements in treating bone metastases. These initiatives have continued our tradition of supporting cutting-edge research that transforms patient care and improves survival rates.

Translational Research  

Building on our success in bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world application, we have expanded our translational research portfolio to seven active projects. By fostering collaborations with biotech companies and research institutions, we will accelerate the development of groundbreaking diagnostics and treatments, ensuring they reach patients faster.

Influencing

Our influencing work has taken centre stage this year with the completion of our cost-benefit analysis, which has already generated significant interest. We have already launched this impactful analysis at an event at the House of Commons, at which we advocated for policy changes that prioritise early detection and equitable access to prostate cancer care. This initiative will help secure national commitment to advancing screening and diagnostic pathways.

We are now driving this campaign forward through lobbying and publicity as we aim to maximise on comms opportunities to raise the profile and awareness around the need for early detection.

Patient Projects

Empowering patients remains at the heart of everything we do. Following the success of our Infopool initiative, we will develop a follow-on project to enhance support for those living with prostate cancer. This new resource will build on the strengths of Infopool by providing even more tailored, accessible information to patients and their families with a focus on those most in need of better information. We have created truly groundbreaking projects that reach diverse communities, tackle deep-rooted challenges, and unlock the potential of scientists, advocates, and the communities we serve.

Prostate Cancer Research (“PCR”) is looking for up to three new Trustees to join our Board. We are specifically looking for people with the following experience:

 A Senior Comms professional. This trustee would potentially open doors with media outlets and help PCR to navigate and maximise the increased opportunities we have recently experienced. Examples include a long-standing campaign focused on screening for men that has been extensively featured in the Daily Mail. We now have further opportunities with potential TV ads and an awareness on the back of a prominent story in a popular soap.

A Senior Finance professional.  This trustee will have financial management experience (highly likely but not required to be a qualified accountant). They will bring financial expertise and experience to PCR’s activities and will be required to be part of our Finance Audit and Risk Committee.

A Translational Research/Data Analyst professional. This trustee will have translational research and/or Data Analyst expertise and will be capable of guiding strategic decisions and ensuring the organisation's research efforts are impactful and effective. This person would ideally have experience of spinning out a company or be well versed in the pharmaceutical industry.

A Senior HR professional. This trustee will have a track record of managing high performing teams in a growth environment. The Trustee will be a member of our People and Culture sub-committee, seeking to ensure staff are motivated by our vision & mission, enabling high retention and strong performance, alongside oversight of nominations, remuneration and policies. 

We would ideally find candidates that have some experience across two of the areas of experience.

The Opportunity  

Prostate Cancer Research’s Board comprises Trustees with experience across the medical sector, the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, charity governance, finance, fundraising and communications. We also ensure that the experience of prostate cancer patients is directly represented on our Board.

Our Board provides governance and oversight to ensure we are fulfilling our objectives. Its responsibilities are to:

• Contribute to the strategic direction of PCR, setting overall strategy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance.

• Engage effectively as a Board to stimulate carefully considered and highquality strategic decision-making.

• Work in partnership with the CEO and Senior Management, helping them achieve the aims of PCR. 

• Act as an ambassador of PCR, to promote the charity and the importance of research into new treatments and diagnostics for prostate cancer patients.

• Provide governance oversight to ensure compliance with charity law and good practice.

• Safeguard the charity’s assets, including responsibility for its financial sustainability. 

In addition to the above, each Trustee uses specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising Board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the Trustee has expertise.

The Trustee Role and Responsibilities 

 Terms of the appointment:

• The Board meets four times per year.

• Meetings are held in person at PCR’s offices in London, with the option for Trustees to join meetings remotely depending on their location or availability. Candidates are expected to be UK-based. 

• In addition, Trustees often choose to provide advice and support to PCR’s Senior Management on specific projects and initiatives that are relevant to a Trustee’s areas of expertise. Involvement of this nature is discretionary and flexible, being respectful of Trustees other professional and personal commitments. 

• Trustees can also join a Board committee, which also meet four times per year ahead of the full board meeting. We have highlighted in the specs above which roles will be required to join a specific committee.

• This role is unremunerated, but reasonable, pre-agreed expenses will be reimbursed.

• The appointment is for an initial three-year term, with Trustees expected to serve for at least two terms. A third term is possible at the discretion of the Board.

A bit about this role

This role is based in the Canterbury area covering postcodes CT1, CT2, CT3, CT4, CT5, CT6, ME13.

Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.

Here at Youth4Youth, we have grown a strong, tight-knit community of individuals who are passionate about making a difference and improving the lives of young people across the UK. Our growing team of volunteers all contribute, significantly, to the impact that we have as a charity on our direct beneficiaries, regardless of the department that they work in of the level of time that they are able to commit. Our services primarily offer a peer-support network to young people right across the UK, allowing them to access a peer mentor who is of a similar age to them and somebody that they feel more comfortable speaking with.

About the role

As Youth4Youth continues to grow, we are focusing on strengthening the long-term financial sustainability of the Charity. We are seeking 3 - 4 experienced individuals to join the Board of Directors of a new Commercial Trading Subsidiary (Y4Y Trading Ltd, yet to be incorporated). This is an exciting opportunity for individuals to have a material impact on the success of the wider charity by promoting and ensuring commercial excellence throughout all commercial activities. 

Responsibilities 

• Attend 4 to 6 Board Meetings per year, each up to 1.5 hours in length and will be held remotely via teams. 
• Hold ultimate authority, in line with all management agreements between Y4Y Trading Ltd and Youth4Youth Ltd, to ensure the success of all commercial activities.
• Hold legal responsibility for the subsidiary entity, ensuring that all statutory requirements are met ahead of deadlines. 
• Constructively challenge opinions and biases to ensure the right decisions are made, with the ultimate aim of delivering maximum return to the charitable group.
• Providing scrutiny of executive and business performance in meeting agreed strategy, plan, goals and objectives, as well as monitoring reporting of performance.

Skills 

• Extensive strategic or leadership experience in relevant areas, including procurement, sales, operational management, vendor management, business development and other key commercial areas.
• Strong communication skills, able to actively challenge and drive decisions forward to the right outcome.
• Ability to foresee problems arising and present solutions to solve potential problems.

The hiring process

The hiring process for a Commercial Trading Subsidiary Board is slightly different to our standard process. Candidates should understand that the process entails:

By working as part of the Maintenance team, you will help us ensure the Centre is looking at its very best and looking spick and span by keeping the facilities in excellent condition, so we can continue to provide our visitors with a great day out and showcase our work to save wetlands for wildlife and people. 

You will mainly be volunteering to assist with painting and decorating around the Centre and the occasional work in up keeping other buildings / hides as required. Tasks may include the following:

Social Anxiety Alliance UK is a young and developing charity looking for an experienced Treasurer with a background in financial management and accounting to continue the charity's development.  

The Treasurer would also need to be willing to be a Trustee and be aware of the governance issues relating to such a role.

Social anxiety involves an excessive fear of social situations. Sufferers will often fear being embarrassed or worry about being negatively evaluated by others. Anticipatory anxiety and situational avoidance are common, and individuals may endure social situations with a high level of discomfort. The scope of the anxiety may be focused on specific types of social situations or generalised to almost any social encounter.

We are the first UK charity dedicated to Social Anxiety.

What will you be doing

Contribute towards the good management of the charity by carrying out key responsibilities as follows:

Saferworld is an independent international organisation working to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives. We work with people affected by conflict to improve their safety and sense of security, and conduct wider research and analysis. We use this evidence and learning to improve local, national and international policies and practices that can help build lasting peace. Our priority is people – we believe in a world where everyone can lead peaceful, fulfilling lives, free from fear and insecurity. We are a not-for-profit organisation operational in 12 countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Saferworld is currently looking for a new Chair of the Board of Trustees. This role will be responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Saferworld, ensuring the organisation’s aims, objectives, and goals align with its governing document, as well as legal and regulatory guidelines. The ideal candidate should have a broad understanding of the charity sector as well as an understanding of how charities operate in a local context – often operating effectively in extremely challenging environments. An understanding of the UK charity context would be helpful but is not crucial. 

The Board is currently reviewing different governance models, including the possibility of a Chair/Vice Chair structure. While this model is still under consideration, it would involve clearly defined roles and responsibilities, helping to balance the workload and bring diverse perspectives to the Board’s leadership. The incoming Chair should be adaptable and open to these ongoing discussions, and play a key role in shaping and refining the governance structure to ensure it aligns effectively with Saferworld’s needs.

About Us: 

Evolve Counselling is a long-established charitable social enterprise, providing low cost, affordable or funded mental health counselling to adults in mainly Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties. Our counselling community is made up of 50 – 60 qualified self-employed practitioners, working part-time. We deliver talking therapies to adults – online and in person. Our service delivers around 500 counselling sessions per month to a broad range of individuals, many of whom would not otherwise be able to access counselling support. Evolve also provides supervision, reflective practice, critical incident support, and mental health awareness and related training, to organisations and businesses large and small.

Our Trustee Board is currently drawn from the counselling and therapies community, plus commercial and other charity backgrounds. What is involved

• Commitment to providing a loving home, care, and training for a dog for the duration of their time in training.
• We consider this a full-time role as you, or another approved adult member of the household, will be required to care for the dog for much of the day and overnight.
• Our trainers need access to the dogs during weekdays for training purposes. We ask that you commute to and from our training centre when required to drop off/collect the dog. Drop off and collection times are between 7.30 - 9.30am and 4-6pm. We try to be as flexible as possible with the times that are best for you.
• Availability to attend pre-arranged training sessions at your home, in your local area, and at our training centre.
• Attend an Introduction session before we coordinate a dog into your care
• With our guidance, and using positive training methods, to continue the training of the dog in various areas. For example:
  • Home behaviour
  • Social behaviour
  • Behaviour around other animals
  • Walking on a lead
  • Off lead exercise
• Maintaining the dog’s health and welfare and, via support and training, to recognise behaviour/health concerns and report them immediately to the dog’s trainer.

What we require from you

• You live within a 30-minute drive of our training centre (post code LE12 9SR)
• That you, as the dog's main carer, are over 18 years of age
• You have a dog friendly secure garden
• Though desirable, prior dog ownership is not required.
• All members of the household are keen to foster.
• There is no more than one pet dog living in your home. The pet dog must be over 12 months of age and would need to undergo our pet dog suitability assessment
• Have the time and ability to commit to the training and care of a young dog. This is a physical role
• Have access to a suitable vehicle to transport the dog
• That you or other approved adult member of the household are at home most of the day, and overnight, to care for the dog
• Attend two training sessions each year
• Understand that the dog in your care remains under the ownership of Canine Partners

Support and Training

• Induction process which includes telephone assessment and home visit
• On-going Instruction and support from our dog trainers. This will be in person, via video link, phone calls, handouts etc.
• Holiday cover and appointments cover can be arranged.
• Payment of expenditure such as mileage to and from a training session with a Canine Partner representative
• Access to our volunteer portal with many resources for your use.
• Invitation to join our Official Canine Partners Community Facebook Group

As a Trustee, you will collaborate closely with our executive team to further the organisation’s mission to support all learners to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life.

Gateway does this by providing qualifications and assessment opportunities sought by employers and delivered by education and training providers.

Your wealth of skills and experience will play a crucial role in realising our strategic direction, with a heightened emphasis on product innovation, modernisation through technology and system improvements, and maintaining quality and customer focus through periods of policy and sector reforms.

This will allow us to lead national efforts in skill development and position Gateway Qualifications as a leading voice in education that works closely with providers and employers.

What will you be doing? 

Run tutoring sessions online to support a young person.

Help to combat social isolation through fun and engaging tutoring sessions.
