The Board of Trustees’ role
TRAFFIC International’s charitable objects are “to promote for the public benefit the conservation and protection of nature and natural resources worldwide through helping to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is at sustainable levels and in accordance with domestic and international laws and agreements.”

The role of the Board of Trustees is to ensure compliance with the requirements of UK Charity Law under which they are responsible, namely:
• Directing the business of TRAFFIC International to ensure that it is solvent, properly managed and delivers its charitable objectives;
• Ensuring that TRAFFIC International complies with charity law and prepares Annual Reports and accounts which demonstrate this;
• Ensuring that TRAFFIC International complies with its governing documents and charitable purpose as set out in the Articles of Association; and
• Ensuring that TRAFFIC International complies with all relevant legislation and regulations governing the activities in which it is involved.

Our Trustees are active supporters of TRAFFIC, making their individual skills, experience and knowledge available and assisting with whatever work is required including sitting on subcommittees and advisory boards. They are required to develop and maintain a sound and up-to date knowledge of the charity and its business, including the social, economic and political environment in which it operates and the nature and extent of its work.

The Board collectively oversees the delivery of planned results by monitoring the organisation’s performance against strategic objectives and targets.

Within the above context, we are seeking Trustees who will provide strategic guidance, expert advice, and access to relevant partners and networks in the following areas:
• Finance and/or the private sector to provide strategtic guidance in targeting supply chains, building partnerships and assisting in creating philanthropic opportunities vital to the success of TRAFFIC.
• Environmental law and legal justice especially as regards to use of natural resources and the engagement of local communities;
• International trade and economic policy including linking wildlife trade with global trade;
• Sustainable development including delivering on SDGs and corporate sustainability;
• Collection, use and access of data (including innovation around artificial intelligence and big data);
• Marketing and communications to develop and amplify TRAFFIC’s messaging and support consumer behaviour change efforts.

Person specification
Your knowledge and experience

• A senior organisational leader with experience gained in other equally complex operating environments, ideally in more than one sector.
• Expertise in one or more of the priority areas listed above.
• Insight into the traits and characteristics of the global conservation sector would be useful (although experience in conservation is not required).
• Practical experience of leading, overseeing or advising on organisational development and growth would be useful, including the development of organisational cultures to meet strategic priorities.
• Experience of working as part of multi-skilled non-executive boards and of developing inclusive non-executive teams.
• Knowledge of charity governance principles and practices.
• Knowledge of communicating effectively with international stakeholder groups.

Branch Secretary

RSPCA Macclesfield, South East Cheshire & Buxton

Would you get a buzz from being part of a team of volunteers dedicated to helping animals in need, working mainly from home at a time that suits you?

Key Responsibilities:

• To act as principal communications trustee managing and maintaining the administrative affairs of the branch.
• To act as main contact point for all branch communications with the national Society, the  branch committee and the branch membership.
• Order and distribute RSPCA stationary, leaflets, posters and other fundraising and promotional material.
•  Arrange branch meetings, usually 11 per year, there is no meeting in December, meetings generally last about 2 hours and are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month.
• Ensure all branch committee decisions are implemented and actions completed.
• Arrange the branch AGM Including the compilation and distribution of the annual report, nominations and agenda in line with the strict timetable laid down in the branch rules.
• Arrange the timely dissemination of the contents of all correspondence and literature received by the branch, ensuring availability to all committee members, and reply to all  branch correspondence where necessary.
• Liaise with the Branch Support Specialist and group chief inspector and notify them of all  branch meetings.
• Monitor the secretary email address, issue the newsletters, issue any one off appeals.
• Training is available.

Sometimes of the year are much busier than others. For example, April when the Annual Report needs to be done, May when all the calling notices for the AGM need to be sent out and in June when everything needs to be prepared ready for the AGM. Working from home with occasional visits to team meetings in Macclesfield, preferably local to the areas the branch covers.

Applicants will need to be able to prioritise/organise a workload, being tactful but clear, have basic computer skills, understanding confidentiality and working independently whilst keeping everyone informed and accept the ethos of the RSPCA.

We will work with all relevant regulatory bodies, including Local Authorities, the Charity Commission and other local and national bodies to ensure that safeguarding arrangements are robust, current and fit for purpose. The branch will cooperate with all inspection and scrutiny of its safeguarding arrangements as appropriate.

All those who work or volunteer for or with the branch will be given access to this policy.

Volunteer Position: Translator
Are you fluent in multiple languages and passionate about animal welfare? Join our team as a Translator and help ROLDA share impactful stories, resources, and initiatives with audiences worldwide! This is a remote opportunity to use your language skills for a meaningful cause, assisting us in raising awareness and support for animal rescue and welfare.

What You’ll Do:

• Translate with Purpose: Translate a variety of content types, from animal rescue stories and veterinary advice to behaviour tips and welfare initiatives. Ensure translations are meaningful and adapted for clarity and engagement in your native language.

• Craft Content with Care: Manual translations are key; while online translation tools can assist, you’ll ensure the final product is natural and culturally relevant for our readers.

• Support an International Mission: Help bridge language gaps so ROLDA can connect with supporters across the world!

Role description

Are you passionate about changing the way we treat animals? Do you want to help reduce environmental damage? Do you want to inspire people to enjoy healthy vegan food that both looks good and tastes great? 

The Vegan Society aims to make veganism more accessible. We help people to adopt a vegan lifestyle by supporting individuals, policy- and decision-makers, caterers, manufacturers, healthcare professionals and the media. 

Why do we need you? 

Laura Chepner is our Education Officer, and she is looking for a volunteer to support her in her role. Laura has a background in education, with a degree in Primary Education which preceded a decade of teaching and a short stint in the role of SENco (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). Shortly after that, Laura theorised vegan-inclusive teaching, published An Educator’s Guide for Vegan-Inclusive Teaching and worked as the UK’s first vegan-inclusion education specialist until joining The Vegan Society. 

At The Vegan Society, Laura supports vegan learners in education who have been discriminated against by acting as an intermediary between their families and the institution. Additionally, Laura supports educators by creating resources and delivering training sessions on what it means to be vegan-inclusive in their practice. Furthermore, Laura empowers parents/guardians to ask for vegan-inclusion by creating documents, with the help of The Education Network, that they can present and highlight their rights. 

What does the role involve? 

This role involves working alongside our Education Officer to create around 50 differentiated worksheets for teachers of key stage 1 (KS1), Year 2 to use. No lesson plans to be made – just worksheets that support the National Curriculum English programmes of study for KS1, Year 2 outcomes. Laura would delegate certain literacy areas such as ‘suffixes –ful and –less’. Once complete, we would meet online to look over and then Laura would delegate another area of literacy to be completed.  

Below is an example of the type of worksheets that will be created. 

‘Today I am learning to use regular plural noun suffixes – s or – es.’ 

These tasks are not exhaustive, and more assignments may arise as the project progresses.

What training and support is available? 

The ideal candidate for this role will have a background in Primary Education and be comfortable working independently. However, we are always willing to invite volunteers along to staff training when possible and to deliver training on specific skills in-house, as identified throughout the volunteering period. This role is remote, so support from the Education Officer will be available through email and phone calls as required. Monthly  reviews with the Volunteering and Engagement Officer will also be conducted to ensure the volunteer is happy in their role. 

What skills would be useful in doing this role? 

We are looking for a volunteer with: 

• KS 1 or KS 2 experience

• good Microsoft Office competency   

• an awareness of Vivi the Supervegan books  

• confidence to communicate any training or support needs  

• an ability to work independently.  

What does my availability need to be? 

We are looking for someone who is available for two months, starting as soon as possible. We are looking for eight hours of volunteer time per week, done across one or two working days, which are the same working days each week.

VOLUNTEER CO-ORDINATOR

RSPCA Middlesborough, Teesside & District Branch

Are you passionate about helping animals in your community?  Would you like to do something meaningful with your free time?  The RSPCA needs people like you so that we can improve animal welfare in Middlesbrough and Teesside.

Volunteers are very important to us and without them we can't support animals in your community.  So, we need to find the right volunteers, motivate them, give them the tools they need and organise them.  That’s where you can help.  As Volunteer Co-ordinator you would take the lead in finding volunteers, onboarding them, organising them for fundraising, social media, animal welfare and other activities and creating a high performing team.  You won’t be on your own. You’ll be joining a team of motivated people who use their skills and love of animals to do something meaningful and have fun at the same time. 

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

You will lead all of our volunteers, being responsible for recruitment, onboarding, team spirit, organising resources based on the current projects, ensuring high performance, supporting where needed and always celebrating success.

We are a Branch which is restarting, so you will have a lot of freedom to create your own team of volunteers and organise them in the way you prefer.  You will work with the Trustees and Managers to understand what is needed and build and organise a team of volunteers to deliver this.  You’ll jump in where there are gaps, you’ll suggest improvements and help each volunteer to succeed.  This role can be flexible based on how much time you have to give.  The more time you have, the more impact you can make.

BRANCH CO-ORDINATOR - RSPCA Middlesborough, Teesside & District Branch

As we restart our operations, we want you to take the lead. This can be your own start-up, with freedom to build a team and set up the Branch in the way you think is best. You will be in overall charge of fundraising, animal welfare programs, volunteers and financial management. You will work with a highly supportive group of Trustees, who use their skills to do something meaningful whilst collaborating and having fun, and you’ll have the resources at your disposal to create something very special.  Our fundraising goes to animal welfare programs so you can directly see the impact of your efforts. 

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

You will lead the Branch. You will have 2 main focus areas: fundraising and animal welfare.

In building fundraising programs - both traditional and online - you’ll recruit volunteers to bring these programs to life. You will ensure the right risk assessments are completed, that safeguarding is always in place and that we comply with the relevant rules. You will build relationships with potential donors and identify new sources of income. You will be the brains and the energy behind everything we do because, without fundraising, we cannot support animal welfare.

You will execute the current animal welfare programs and work with the RSPCA Inspectors and Branch Trustees to identify future needs and build new welfare programs. You will work with local vets and create and grow partnerships which allow us to deliver more services and efficiently use our resources.

We are a Branch which is restarting, so you will be free to create your own team, set up the best ways of working and decide which programs to pursue. You’ll jump in where there are gaps, bring in new ideas and guide the Trustees on where you need their help. You’ll drive excellent performance from your teams and help them to feel included, motivated and fulfilled. The role can be flexible, or even shared, based on how much time you have to give.

What we need from you

You’ll be:

• Disseminating relevant organisation-wide information and updates to the branch volunteers
• Supporting engagement and communication between the branch and wider organisation
• Drafting committee meeting agendas and taking and sharing meeting minutes
• Supporting the efficient running of the branch by ensuring administration processes are carried out effectively
• Supporting the administration and update of the branch annual plan 
• Sign-posting queries from members of the public
• Keeping branch records and information up to date and secure, using Cats Protection systems – training will be provided

Time expectation

Our support volunteers usually spend 2-5 hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

In April 2024, our branch expanded, encompassing our existing area of Lincoln, Gainsborough, Wragby, Witham St Hughs, Woodhall Spa and Horncastle and gaining new geographical areas including Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Louth and Mablethorpe. Our volunteer base is crucial to support our re-homing, run our charity shops and fundraising activities efficiently and we now have ambitious plans for our expanded area to ensure more mistreated animals can find their forever homes.

About us:

RSPCA Lincolnshire Mid, NE & Lincoln Branch rehabilitates and re-homes animals rescued by the RSPCA's national Inspectors. We also promote responsible pet ownership and hold animal action days such as for microchipping.

We currently run three charity shops and regular fundraising events, to support more than 100 animals escape cruelty and neglect, to find their forever home each year.

What you can bring to our board:

The Trustees make extremely important decisions for the branch, for example deciding on how to raise income for the branch, as well as meeting in sub-groups to consider important subject matters with recommendations being made to the full board of trustees.  Our branch is an extremely passionate branch with eleven trustees currently forming the committee.

We are looking for someone willing to bring their volunteer management experience to our board. We want to ensure we are communicating well with our volunteers and maximising opportunities for them to bring their skills and expertise to our branch activities through targeted engagement.  You will support our decisions around communications and events, volunteer activity planning, volunteer recruitment, training and performance management, and much more. 

You will live and/or work in our branch area in Lincolnshire, UK, to bring local insight to our branch decisions.

We meet monthly as a board, with most of these online but we like to also meet at least 3 times each year in-person, as well as support local fundraising events.

BRANCH TRUSTEE - RSPCA Middlesborough, Teesside & District Branch

We are looking for a Branch Trustee to help us manage the Middlesbrough, Teesside and District Branch.  As a Trustee you will be a full and equal member of our leadership team, making strategies, decisions deciding what we focus on, how we raise and spend money, organising events, working as a team to improve animal welfare in our community.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Trustees manage the charity.  Like any organisation we get involved in people, finance and legal topics, making strategies and assessing which projects to support, tracking progress on animal welfare programs, working with local vets to offer more support out of hours, or making sure our volunteers are well managed and motivated.  More importantly, we focus on raising funds, managing volunteers and spending money where it is needed to support animals in our community - YOUR community.  So, whatever your background or skills there is a role you can play.

You will hold the organisation accountable, ensure compliance and be an ambassador, promoting the good work we do and encouraging our teams to continue their efforts to support animal welfare.

You may be an experienced Trustee or new to the role (we can help with training).  You will have leadership experience gained in any sector and a passion for animal welfare.  You will bring the ability to lead people, motivate teams and manage change.  You will be able to understand complex topics, ask logical questions and be willing to hold an organisation accountable for fulfilling its responsibilities.  You will be willing to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into the details, make decisions and speak up.

You will be a full part of the team leading this charity.  Your voice will be heard and you will help guide the charity and decide its direction.  You’ll have the opportunity to be part of a dynamic team, build something new and really make your mark. VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISER - RSPCA Middlesborough, Teesside & District Branch

Are you passionate about helping animals in your community? Would you like to do something meaningful with your free time? Do you live in Teesside? Then we would love to hear from you! The RSPCA needs people like you so we can continue to improve animal welfare in Middlesbrough and Teesside.

We are looking for volunteers to support local fundraising activities. By raising more funds, we can support more animals and, by investing a small amount of your time, you can make a real difference. Funds raised are used for animal welfare programs so you can directly see how your efforts make an impact. You won’t be on your own. You’ll be joining a team of motivated people who use their skills and love of animals to do something meaningful and have fun at the same time. 

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

You’ll be helping to organise and carry out fundraising activities within your community. If you are an experienced fundraiser, then we’d love for you to share that experience and your ideas - and you’ll get a lot of freedom to make your ideas come alive. If this is new to you, that’s no problem - you’ll work with our team to carry out fundraising projects and gain new experiences.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Whatever your background or skills there is a role for you. If you are an experienced fundraiser, you can lead individual projects or co-ordinate a team of fundraisers and see your ideas turn into reality. If you have fund-raised before, that’s fine too - it’s a great place to learn.

SOCIAL MEDIA VOLUNTEER- RSPCA Middlesborough, Teesside & District Branch

Are you passionate about helping animals in your community?  Are you an expert in turning websites, social media or eCommerce sites into powerful tools to get a message across, create awareness, build a following or raise funds?  Would you like to do something meaningful with your free time?  The RSPCA needs people like you so that we can improve animal welfare in Middlesbrough and Teesside.

We are seeking volunteers to supercharge our website and social media to boost awareness and increase fundraising.  By raising more funds we can support more animals and by investing a small amount of your time you can make a real difference and directly see the impact of your efforts.  Join a team of motivated people who use their skills to do something meaningful while collaborating with interesting people and having fun.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

You will regularly post on our website, Facebook page and other social media to promote our fundraising events, make people aware of our animal welfare programs and update on the latest RSPCA news.  If you have more expertise, you will guide the Branch team on how to increase the following on each platform, how to monetise the platforms and what else we can do online to increase fundraising.  Activities can be done from home and matched to your skills and availability.  Whether you have a lot of time or just a little bit of time, we can help you make a difference.

Working in partnership, Buckinghamshire Council and Garden Organic are excited to champion waste prevention as part of the Waste Busters Programme. Together, we recruit, train and support residents, equipping them with the skills and confidence to share waste prevention messages in their own communities and networks. Volunteers are based around the county, supported by a dedicated coordinator and provided not only with training but also a suite of leaflets and resources designed to promote key aspects of waste prevention; Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Compost, and Recycle.

What does it involve?

Waste Busters are volunteers who, for example, might encourage people in their local community to compost their kitchen and garden waste, give talks explaining the right things to put in the right bins, attend events sharing meal plans to reduce food waste.

Anyone can be a Waste Buster, you don’t have to be an expert in any of the topics. You’ll join a network of likeminded volunteers, and with training and support from a local coordinator, together we can make a difference across Buckinghamshire.

How much commitment do I have to make?

There is no absolute commitment, we appreciate your support sharing the projects messages, however you choose to do it. Some volunteers will spend around 30 hours each year. These hours include all travel and preparation time. This figure however is not a requirement and your volunteering may be entirely within your own setting, adding value to your organisation or groups waste prevention activities.

Is this for you?

We’re looking for volunteers with an interest in waste prevention and ‘doing the right thing’ with the waste we produce, people that care about the environment and the impact of climate change.

You don’t need to know anything about waste reduction. We will provide training, skills and support to equip you with the confidence to go on to share these skills with others.

With your support we will engage and inspire more people across Buckinghamshire to think about their waste and hopefully produce less.

Charity Shop Driver

RSPCA Sussex West Branch

Can you help our shops get items from A to B? We're looking for a volunteer who can dedicate time and their vehicle to collect donations and deliver goods. You would play a vital role in helping us raise funds to support our animal welfare work.

Volunteer drivers play an essential part in the operation of our shops since they are responsible for collecting and delivering items of donated stock and moving stock between shops.

Our Charity Shop

We are a thriving RSPCA centre with an animal centre and 4 charity shops.

 We are a relatively small team of 20 with 20 lovely volunteers who cover all different roles within the centre. The van drivers will have a couple of inductions/shadowing sessions with another volunteer but otherwise they will not be volunteering with anyone else on their day.

Our shops play an essential role in raising the profile of the RSPCA in our local community and funds for our branch so that we can continue our vital animal welfare work. Our shops sell a mixture of donated items, including clothes, books, bric-a-brac and collectables, and a selection of new items.

Volunteer Driver responsibilities

• Collect and deliver donated and purchased items.
• Move stock between charity shops.
• Ensure that RSPCA rules and regulations are complied with.
• Carry out a small amount of administrative work, such as completing mileage returns.

What we are looking for in a volunteer Drive

•  Friendly and helpful with an interest in local animal welfare.
•  All necessary training will be given.
•  Expenses and fuel costs provided.
•  Volunteers must be aged 18 or over.
•  Someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment predominately on every 4th Wednesday of the month starting at 9.45am for 6 hours.
