Animal Volunteer Roles
We are looking to strengthen our Board of Trustees with up to three new Trustee appointments, including Chair of Trustees. We are seeking volunteers from a diverse range of backgrounds to join Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol A.R.C.) as a Trustee to help make a difference to Bristol’s most vulnerable animals.
As a Trustee, you will have the chance to influence our strategy and directly support our teams of experts in the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming or release of animals that come into our care.
You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside your fellow Trustees, in providing the governance that supports the CEO and senior management team in the successful running of the organisation.
We are particularly interested to hear from candidates with relevant experience in the following areas: Animal Welfare, Fundraising & Communications and Governance.
Role of the Trustee
The ultimate responsibility of our Board Members is to ensure that Bristol A.R.C. works towards its mission, values and objectives in an effective, fair and legal manner. Duties will include:
- Regular attendance at Board meetings, taking place either online or at our Bristol centre, at least 6 times a year and additional trustee meetings and participation in subcommittees. The subcommittees are typically run within usual working hours.
- Ensure that Bristol A.R.C. complies with charity law and Charity Commission requirements and its governing documents.
- Oversight of the strategic, financial and governance position of the charity.
What we can offer you as a Trustee
- A platform to utilise your skills and experience to oversee the charity and make decisions that have a direct impact on the welfare of local animals and people, as well as the wider community.
- Satisfaction of helping us make a difference and give something back to animals and people of Bristol.
- A way to expand both your professional and personal network through meeting and working with like-minded people who share your passion for promoting animal welfare.
- Induction, support and training from us.
We would encourage people from all sections of our communities to apply. We are also happy to accept applications from people without prior Board experience but who can evidence their commitment to our values and ambitions and show a willingness and time to learn in the role.
About our existing Board
There are currently eight volunteer Trustees with varied experience and skills including corporate accounting, people and wellbeing, business management, and risk management. We are a friendly Board, passionate about our cause and we enjoy welcoming new people and talents to support our work on behalf of animals.
Our mission is to ensure animals in need within our community receive the compassion, care and respect they deserve.

Created by a team of passionate dog lovers from the animal welfare group IAPWA, the I Love Hiking and Dogs UK Facebook community is a space to explore new walking routes, connect with like-minded dog owners, and take part in dog-friendly hiking meet-ups across the UK. While our group is designed for dog lovers, you don’t need to own a dog to get involved, everyone is welcome to join our community, share experiences, and take part in our group walks. Our meet-ups also offer an opportunity to support animal welfare causes, helping to improve the lives of dogs around the world.
About the Role
We are looking for enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to help coordinate and host local Wag & Walks in their area. These walks are casual, community-led dog walks where members of our Facebook group can meet up, enjoy nature, and connect with fellow dog lovers.
As a Wag & Walk Coordinator, you will:
- Organise and promote dog-friendly walks in your local area.
- Create Facebook events within the group, including key details about the walk (date, location, distance, difficulty).
- Encourage local participation by sharing the event in the group and inviting members.
- Welcome attendees on the day of the walk and ensure a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.
- Share photos and highlights from the walks to inspire others to join in.
This is a flexible volunteer role - you can organise walks as often or as little as you like, depending on your availability.
We’d love to hear from you if you are:
- A dog lover who enjoys walking and meeting new people.
- Organised and able to coordinate group walks in your area.
- Enthusiastic about bringing your local dog-friendly community together.
- Comfortable promoting events in the Facebook group and engaging with members.
Important Considerations
- Wag & Walk are peer-led walks, not official guided hikes. You will simply be organising a community walk rather than leading an event in any formal capacity.
- Each attendee is responsible for themselves and their dog. Your role is to coordinate, not supervise.
- You must clearly communicate walk details, including difficulty level and accessibility, so that attendees can make informed decisions.
Why Get Involved:
- A great way to meet fellow dog lovers and explore new walking routes.
- Contribute to building a supportive, dog-friendly community.
- Enjoy the outdoors while helping others connect through shared experiences.
- Have the opportunity to support animal welfare initiatives through our group activities.

The time commitment is spread across these activities and includes time for preparation. There is also the opportunity to get more involved if you wish with additional briefings, informal property visits or by supporting the work of the Council’s committees.

About the Election and Election Process
This year we are expecting to fill seven election vacancies for a three-year term starting after the AGM in November 2025.
Standing for election involves making an application to our Nominations Committee and having your candidacy published to our members in the autumn in the election material and on our website. In fairness to all candidates, you should not participate in any other methods of publicising your candidature.
A ballot of members is conducted in September/October and the results are usually announced at the AGM.
Please note that the Nominations Committee is required to recommend to members those candidates who they believe are best suited to undertaking the work of the Council. In reaching its recommendation, the Committee will consider how candidates demonstrate the broad range of the qualities and experience we’re looking for and can help the Trust achieve its ambition of being for everyone – you can find out more about these in the candidate information.
Any current members of the Council who are standing for re-election should note that attendance records for meetings will be published.
Please read our Code of Conduct which applies to everyone who volunteers in a non-executive capacity.
How to apply and closing date
If you would like to stand for election, you will need to complete an application which contains the following:
- A candidate information form [JH1] which includes your election statement and answers to two questions posed by the Nominations Committee, as well as a completed declaration and affirmation;
- Supplementary information which you can use to explain anything that you think might be helpful to the Nominations Committee that is not included elsewhere in your application;
- A brief CV (maximum length two sides of A4);
Next Steps
The Nominations Committee will meet in April to review applications and will invite a number of candidates to meet the Committee. You can expect to hear from us about the progress of your application towards the end of April.
The Committee will meet invited candidates on 1, 2 & 8 May 2025. We plan to hold these meetings online and alternative arrangements may be possible if candidates have issues accessing online meetings, you’ll just need to let us know. The Nominations Committee aims to match its recommendations to the number of vacancies which are expected this year.
Please note that valid election statements of all eligible candidates, whether or not they are invited to meet the Committee, will go forward for publication to our members. Anyone wishing to withdraw from the election process will need to notify us by 30 May 2025.
If you are successful in the election, you will be invited to attend an induction day in January 2026 in one of our offices, either Swindon or London.

- Organise fun interactive activities such as polls, contests, or themed challenges to encourage engagement.
2. Group Moderation
- Approve or decline member posts and comments to ensure they align with group rules.
- Address inappropriate content, spam, or disruptive behavior in a fair and diplomatic way.
- Ensure that community guidelines are upheld and that discussions remain positive and welcoming.
3. Community Engagement
- Actively comment on posts to keep discussions going and encourage participation.
- Highlight and celebrate member contributions through shoutouts and featured posts.
- Welcome new members with personalized messages or pinned posts to help them feel part of the group.
4. Event Promotion
- Help share updates about Wag & Walks and other group initiatives.
- Pin event details and encourage members to RSVP or participate.
- Support and promote fundraising initiatives such as the Walk For Paws.
5. Gathering Feedback
- Listen to group members and gather feedback to help improve activities and engagement.
- Share insights with other admins to refine content and community-building efforts.
We’d love to hear from you if you:
- Are active on Facebook and comfortable managing group posts, comments, and content.
- Are passionate about dogs, hiking, and building a friendly online community.
- Have good communication and organisational skills.
- Enjoy engaging with others, fostering discussions, and creating a positive space.
- Can dedicate a few hours a week to posting, moderating, and interacting with members.
- Have previous experience managing social media or online communities (not essential, but a plus!).
Why Get Involved?
- Be part of a growing community that connects dog lovers across the UK.
- Help shape the conversation in a fun, interactive, and supportive environment.
- Develop social media management and community-building skills.
- Meet like-minded people who share your love for hiking and dogs.
