Marie Curie Companion is a professional service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.
Companion Volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support.
Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:
- Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, eg family home, a care home or in the community.
- Provide one-to-one companionship and support.
For example: offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in every-day conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Helping with small, daily tasks, e.g. making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. This may involve offering emotional support, signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested
(This is only an outline as support will vary according to individual needs. Companion volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)
- Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone
- Submit regular visit reports to your manager and update relevant computer systems as required
- Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
- Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator, training and group events as required
- Represent the Marie Curie Companion service positively to those using the service

The purpose of your role is to support the development of Nightline Association volunteers throughout the volunteer journey.
The Volunteer Development Team is responsible for guiding the development of the Nightline Association volunteer journey by creating effective and meaningful processes, promoting skill building and personal growth, and helping create a supportive community that recognises the contribution of volunteers. You will work closely with your team, the Volunteer Development Team Lead, as well as the Heads of Department, to ensure that volunteering is a beneficial and meaningful experience across the organisation.
Your line manager will be the Volunteer Development Team Lead. The Volunteer Development team sits within the Central Services department, led by the Head of Central Services. The Central Services department contains centralised functions, services, and operations that are used by the entire charity.

Provide induction sessions for new volunteers to introduce them to the Nightline Association.

We are first responders and provide services for people who have fallen and those in crisis. We look after hundreds of thousands of people at over 1000 events per year from football crowds to marathon runners and night time revellers.
We continue to play a major role in strengthening community resilience and ensuring people are trained in first aid so they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved with a blend of St John People, both employees and volunteers.

Job responsibilities
In accordance with our governance rules, our current trustee appointments run for a triennium with potential for a further triennium, presenting an exciting opportunity for suitable persons to join us in governing the charity.
Statutory duties of SJAC trustees
- Ensuring the organisation pursues our stated objects (purposes), as defined in our governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy.
- Ensuring the organisation complies with our governing document (i.e. our trust deed, constitution or memorandum and articles of association), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
- Ensuring the organisation applies resources exclusively in pursuance of our charitable objects(i.e. the charity must not spend money on activities that are not included in our own objects, however worthwhile or charitable those activities are) for the benefit of the public.
- Safeguarding the good name and values of our organisation.
- Ensuring the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the organisation, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.
- Ensuring the financial stability of the organisation.
- Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity's funds.
- Following proper and formal arrangements for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the Chief Executive.
Commitment
- Preparing for and attending quarterly in person meetings of the Board each year (currently full days during working hours).
- Attending St John Ambulance Cymru' s AGM (which usually precedes the June Board meeting).
- Being a member of, and actively participating in, at least one (usually more) of the Boards Standing Committees Audit, Risk & Governance, People, Financial Resource, Fundraising & Engagement, Digital & Data, Priory Honours & Awards which all meet at least quarterly. This will include a mixture of face-to-face, hybrid and online meetings, and the requisite preparation work and following up of actions outside the meetings.
- Supporting St John Ambulance Cymru events throughout the year, including the annual Investitures.
- Being responsive to emails and being available to offer ad hoc assistance / advice as required.
- In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of trustees reach sound decisions. High levels of teenage pregnancy and unsafe abortion: Challenge: Teenage pregnancy rates remain high and many young women continue to resort to unsafe abortions since they cannot access safety services. Gender-Based Violence Challenge: Gender-based violence, in particular sexual assault and domestic violence, is rampant against the health and well-being of women and girls.

Mental Health: Stigma/Lack of Awareness Challenge: The stigmatization of mental health issues prevails with a corresponding lack of awareness and understanding about mental health in the community. Lack of Mental Health Services: Challenge: The avenues available for mental health services are very few, and the personnel is few in number; therefore, accessibility to the required aid becomes difficult.

Livelihoods: Unemployment and Underemployment: Challenge: Most youths and women face high levels of unemployment or low wage employment with no stability. About the Placement
Over the course of 12 weeks you will recieve training in a wide variety of topics relating to mental health and support services, as well as the opportunity to work directly with people living with a range of mental health conditions including BPD, PTSD, Bipolar, anxiety and depression.
As well as our bespoke training covering confidentiality, safeguarding, mental health awareness, emotional regulation and trauma, you will have the opportunity to run support groups, provide befriending and undertake a 4-week independent project relating to mental health and support services, as well as the opportunity to get involved in outreach and community engagement.
About You
You don't need any experience, just a passion to learn more about mental health and be able to commit to the length of the program. This is a fully remote placement program, so you will need a computer with reliable broadband, the equipment to participate in Teams calls and a quiet space to join calls and groups. You will also need to provide 2 references and preferably have a DBS certificate on the update service.
Time Committment
This is a 12-week program, each week you will be required to attend 2hrs of training/workshops which are held on Monday evenings, and 1 support group session per week which is held on Sunday evening.

Our Staffordshire Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers in or near to Radstock.
- Are you passionate about wanting to help young people?
- Do you have 2 to 4 hours to spare, once a month?
- Are you ready to make a long-term, regular, commitment?
If the answer is yes and you would like to support a child or young person currently in the care of their local authority, then we would love to hear from you.
You will decide with your young person what to do, but activities could include going to the cinema, bowling, playing football, going to a restaurant, riding a bike, or walking in a park. We will match you with a child you share common interests with.
You do not need experience of working with children and young people, just an interest in their development and welfare. Full training and support are provided.

- Danny (11) lives with foster carers and attends a special school. He would like an Independent Visitor to help him be more independent, he likes parks, aeroplanes, and animals.
- Emma (9) lives with her carer in a very busy household, she would like an Independent Visitor to spend some time with her on her own trying different activities together.

Do you speak Albanian and are looking to give back to the local community? By joining our team of befrienders, you will support us to reach some of the most isolated adults in the community to reduce their feelings of loneliness, build friendships and provide support for mental wellbeing.
What you will be doing
- Agree a mutual time and frequency to meet in the local community
- To develop and promote a positive relationship with your befriendee
- To engage in conversation in Albanian
- To encourage your befriendee to engage in social activities and support
them in doing so whilst building their confidence
- To support your befriendee in developing their goals and social skills
- Encourage your befriendee to make links with community services, based
on their identified goals
