Community Development Officer – Southampton (England South)

We are recruiting a Community Development Officer to engage key partners and stakeholders in the region tailoring support, training and education to create suicide safer communities.

In this role you will:

· Identify, develop and maintain effective partnerships with local communities, volunteers and key partners across the region to engage them in the prevention of young suicide.

· Proactively promote suicide prevention including raising the profile of PAPYRUS and engaging with those personally affected by young suicide.

· Equip a wide range of stakeholders to enable them to create sustainable suicide safer communities through the provision of tailored support, training and education.

· Deliver training and awareness raising products to a variety of groups including professionals, parents, young people, volunteers and other trainers.

· Contribute to the development and review of projects, and education and training products, in line with the Strategic Plans.

· Contribute to and promote campaigns, training and opportunities as outlined in the Regional and Strategic Plans.

· Represent the charity at events including conferences, panels, working groups and through media channels as required.

· Record, monitor and report on data to evaluate our projects and demonstrate impact.

 

To be successful in this role you will have:

· Previous experience working in a community setting, delivering information and training sessions, leading workshops or educational activities

· A proven track record of networking and building and managing effective relationships, tailoring the approach to meet the differing needs of the audience

· Experience as a qualified ASIST Trainer or willingness to gain qualification and experience

· Experience of using own initiative and creativity to develop a project, programme or area of work

· The ability to travel to different locations across Southampton and the South of England to attend meetings, events and deliver training.

Salary: £29,269 per annum (SCP 18) progressing by increments to £32,076 per annum (SCP 23).

The National House Project (NHP) takes a ground-breaking approach through its commitment to young people’s ownership to enable young people leaving care to live connected and fulfilling lives. The approach was co-designed with young people from the start. It is based on a groupwork approach and supports young people to move into properties that become their homes whilst also building a strong and supportive friendship network.

NHP supports Local Authorities to establish Local House Projects (LHPs) and puts young people at the centre of the decision-making processes, supports staff to work with them in an inclusive way and encourages staff to work with young people to find the solutions to the challenges they face. LHPs achieve improved outcomes for young people, challenge the way that professionals work with young people and enable young people to leave care in a planned and supported way.

To ensure that young people are involved at every level of the organisation each LHP elects 2 young people to represent them at the Care Leavers National Movement (CLNM). This forum provides the platform to hear, amplify and act on the voice of young people, who not only support the development of their own LHP but also contribute to developing practice and policy at a national level. CLNM meet regularly, undertake Peer Evaluations, host and deliver their own National Conference and provide an ‘expert user’ consultancy.  Members from this group also sit on the Board of Trustees as expert advisors.

We are looking for someone who is motivated and experienced in working with young people in care to join this national charity.  You will work with the Care Leavers National Movement as well as the core NHP team to ensure that young people continue to drive our work at both a local and national level.

You will need to have a professional/academic qualification in a related field e.g., Youth Work, Social Work, Education, Health. Current registration with a professional body is desirable. The Staying Connected project provides weekly one-to-one and group support for young people aged 11 - 19 years, facing multiple challenges. Creating a personal action plan comprised of positive activities that promote and enhance personal development and skills, building on young people’s strengths. This engagement is via face-to-face, online platforms, mobile phones and structured group work to maintain contact with them, talking about how they are feeling and to provide advice, mentoring and signposting to additional support services.

Key Responsibilities

Programme management

• Programme Delivery: Coordinate and oversee the development and implementation of a personal and social development programme for young people aged 11-19.
• Recruitment: Engage and recruit young people to participate in the programme.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

The Staying Connected Support Worker will bring:

• Minimum Youth Work and/or Mentoring Qualification Level 3

We are looking for a Housing Mobile Night Worker to provide floating support to our teams in high support 24-hour projects as well as medium support and transitional housing units to ensure that our properties are safe, secure, and welcoming through the night. You will be based at the Horsham Y Centre and will support the static night worker there during the night as well as undertaking your mobile duties.

Working on site you will be responsible for ensuring the service is safe by keeping clear records of night time activity within the building. You will regularly complete building checks and monitor CCTV upkeeping health and safety regulations in accordance with YMCA DLG's policies and procedures.  You will work to prevent any anti-social behaviour from impacting our neighbours and other residents. You will work alongside other support staff to maximise the wellbeing of residents by completing one to one interventions with young people who may be experiencing mental health crisis and/or who may need medical assistance.

This is a mobile role, requiring all applicants to have a full valid, UK Driving Licence. You will also be lone working as part of the role, so you will need to be comfortable with decision making and following procedures.

YMCA West Sussex Transitional Housing provides safe, secure accommodation for young people aged 18-25, who have been, or are at risk of homelessness. Our staff team comprises of Supported Housing Support Workers, Housing Mobile Night Workers and two Supported Housing Managers. We offer a support package alongside the accommodation to actively encourage residents into education, training, employment or voluntary work.

In delivering the role, you will work with the Deputy Supported Housing Manager and the wider housing team to provide effective day to day management of our transitional accommodation service. 37.5 hours per week / Permanent / working Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, based onsite in Horsham and will cover Transitional services across Horsham, Crawley, Burgess Hill and Worthing. It is essential that you hold a current driving license and have access to a car for this role.

YMCA West Sussex Transitional Housing provides safe, secure accommodation for young people aged 18-25, who have been, or are at risk of homelessness. Our staff team comprises of Supported Housing Support Workers, Housing Mobile Night Workers and two Supported Housing Managers. We offer a support package alongside the accommodation to actively encourage residents into education, training, employment or voluntary work.

In delivering the role, you will work with the Deputy Supported Housing Manager and the wider housing team to provide effective day to day management of our transitional accommodation service. You will have your own caseload of residents, working creatively and effectively alongside young people to develop their assets and talents and to acquire the skills they need to live independent and fulfilling lives. You will contribute to the smooth and safe running of the service by providing consistency and reliability. You will have a calm, yet assertive manner, being able to handle potentially difficult situations. You will also support young people to safeguard themselves against abuse and risk. There will be times when lone working will be a requirement for this role.

We are currently looking for a Young Person's Resilience Worker to be part of our Newham Rise children and young people’s team. This role involves delivering targeted interventions, focusing on drug and alcohol awareness, education, and prevention for young people. You will also work closely with the MOPAC (Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime) youth-to-adult (Y2A) hub, providing support to young adults aged 18-25 who are also connected to probation services.

About the Role

• Support young people and young adults (18-25) from the point they engage with the service, through their entire journey.
• Work alongside the MOPAC Y2A hub, specifically supporting young adults involved with probation services.
• Provide screening, assessments, psychosocial interventions, care planning, and post-treatment support, ensuring seamless transitions in care.
• Respond effectively to safeguarding issues, ensuring the safety and well-being of the individuals you work with.
• Reduce drug and alcohol-related harm, helping create healthier communities.
• Advocate for access to relevant services, ensuring holistic outcomes in relation to health and well-being.
• Promote positive outcomes that enable young people to lead safer, healthier, and more purposeful lives, building resilience and reducing risks.

About You

• Experience working with young people, with a good understanding of the issues they face.
• Knowledge of safeguarding practices, particularly concerning children and young people, including the Fraser Competence framework.
• Strong understanding of drug and alcohol-related issues and experience in a related field.
• Knowledge of best practices in substance misuse treatment services, especially in relation to young people.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a high level of IT proficiency.
• Team-oriented with a cooperative, supportive approach to achieving service objectives.

As a Playground Coordinator you will be supporting disabled young people and their families by coordinating the delivery of an adventure play service at Lady Allen Playground. This is a great opportunity to develop your existing skills in a rewarding role and gain a strong sense of achievement. 

Working context: 

• You will be required to work variable/unsociable hours including evenings and Saturdays 
• Based on playground sites outside of regular office hours 
• You will be required to work from a second playground site (Chelsea Playground) on occasion 
• Managing a flexible workforce 

Key responsibilities: 

• To manage and supervise staff in the provision of the service 
• Brief staff effectively so they provide a positive play experience 
• Make sure there is a programme of activities that provide children with choices and opportunity for different play and social activities 
• Respond to and develop play episodes with children and other play practitioners  
• Take responsibility for providing 1-1 support for children with a range of disabilities 
• Keep written children records up to date and accurate 
• Demonstrate and record that children are involved in the development and planning of the playground 
• Effectively recruit and prepare play staff to undertake the requirements of the role 
• Co-ordinate and take management responsibilities for external visits and outings 
• To assist the Manager with the physical responsibilities of the playground including site inspections, maintenance, renewals and utilities.  
• To be aware of the budgets and the management of them 
• Make sure the playground meets regulatory requirements including Ofsted, H&S and Quality in Play.  
• Liaise on operational level with relevant Local Authority officers 
• Attend relevant regional and KIDs meetings 
• Participation in your own supervision and Continuing Professional Development 
• Within the post there is an agreed level of decision making responsibility in the delivery of the service especially in the absence of the Manager.  

To be able to carry out this role it is essential that you have the following characteristics: 

• Significant experience of working with disabled children in a play setting 
• Knowledge of disabilities/ impairments and impact on child and family members 
• Ability to engage and support children in a variety of play experiences without supervision 
• Experience of implementing an activity programme 
• Experience of coaching and mentoring sessional workers in areas of good practice 
• Understanding of current Safeguarding processes 
• Ability to work on your own and problem solve with little input from line managers 
• The capacity to undertake, when required, the range of management, development, administrative and liaison duties.  
• Good numeracy and literacy skills 
• Computer literate- good working knowledge of Microsoft office suite  
• Excellent range of communication skills with children, parents and other professionals.
