What you will be doing

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for friendly people aged over 21 who are good communicators to join our volunteer team. They will be reliable, compassionate, caring, respectful and understanding.
You do not need to be an expert; empathy matters more than academic qualifications or experience and we are keen to hear from people from all walks of life.
All we ask is that you are keen and able to:
- Understand the circumstances of children and young people in care and put the needs of children and young people first
- Utilise excellent communication skills and be comfortable conversing with children and young people
- Commit to children and young people’s rights and welfare
- Complete and submit relevant paperwork and forms
- Be computer literate and have access to emails and Microsoft Teams on a device
- Attend quarterly supervisions and volunteer meetings with our volunteer management team
- Attend necessary internal and external training
- Adhere to our volunteer policies and procedures
- Maintain strict confidentiality
- To commit to three or four hours a month offering a commitment of 2 years
- Travel using public transport or your own vehicle (for which you should have a full
UK driving licence)

Overview - This is a Senior Leadership team role.
The Deputy Chief Leader (DCL) role varies on each expedition. The DCL will work closely with
the expedition’s Chief Leader to take a prominent role in planning and training before & during
expedition, and in post expedition reporting. On larger expeditions, this is a Leader position in its own right whilst in others it may be an additional responsibility allocated to an existing Leader position i.e. you could be both a group (‘Fire’) Leader or Base Camp Manager as well as the DCL.
We are looking for applicants who are:
- Comfortable spending extended periods in remote and sometimes harsh environments.
- Able to commit to all pre-expedition training events.
As a charity, all Leader positions are undertaken on a voluntary basis and Leaders join for the intrinsic value of adventure, education, and personal development of young people. You do not have to fundraise to lead on our expeditions.

Sculpt is a UK-based charity with over 20 years’ experience of working with young people aged 14-25 empowering them to shape their futures. Sculpt works with disadvantaged young people in their transition to adulthood, equipping them with life-skills, knowledge and practical work experience to support them to shape their futures. Do you want to support the running of a longstanding, free and highly-effective counselling service for young people?
You could be a trustee for Bracknell-based charity, Youthline.
Set up in 1988, now a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee, we have just celebrated 35 successful years, offering more than 600 counselling hours to young people every month. Demand and complexity of services continue to increase, and we have thus improved space and availability to meet that demand.
Our anniversary year meant a new logo, and in 2023/24, our income was maintained at £220k, with a successful funding bid. Of course, income-generation remains a high priority, as for all charities.
The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee
Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in governing a youth counselling charity, and we require new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries.
You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as full induction and guidance from our trustees and staff will be provided, including access to external training, as needed.
We are looking for new trustees with some skills or experience in:
- Income-generation
- Employee & volunteer support/HR
- We also are looking for ‘general’ trustees who are interested in our mission and services
If you are unsure your abilities or experience fit our needs, please ask: we’re flexible how people can contribute to our charity. If you can think strategically and plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed by our trustees; you’ll also need to be able to work collectively with other Board members. Support from our paid employees is always available, as they deal with the day-to-day running of the organisation.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds to join our Board, and want to expand the diversity of our board, in all meanings of the word, strongly welcoming applications from people from less-represented groups.
We ask for up to five hours of your time per month, less at some times of year, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc. You will need access to digital communications, as some of our charity’s business is run that way, with quarterly Board meetings face-to-face in Bracknell.

The Advisory Council responds to the needs of the AYPH membership as well as reflecting and responding to the views expressed by other professionals in the field.
Time commitment: The Advisory Council meets twice a year online, with opportunities to attend the away day and other AYPH events.
Both Trustees and the Advisory Council link with our Youth Advisory Panel to explore Young Ambassadors’ perspectives on young people’s health together.

Do you want to support a young person in the care system?
Would you like to help build a positive relationship, providing holistic support, and potentially advocating for them?
Do you drive and are you 21 or older?
If so then Bolton Lads and Girls Club want to hear from you! As a Befriender, your role is to provide a young person in the care system an organised friendship with boundaries. Ensuring that they feel heard, and that they have a constant in their life. You can take the young person out for activities to build their trust and ultimately ensure that they have support from someone separate of both the local authority and the care system, an Independent Visitor. Typically the minimum length of time we would expect a volunteer to be in the role is 18 months, however the nature of the role means it could vary. Meetups are normally every 2 to 3 weeks, at a time that is convenient for both people.
Whilst no experience is required as training is provided, previous experience with children/young people can be advantageous.
There is a budget available for activities, and mileage expenses are covered.
