Introduction
The English-Speaking Union (ESU), is a charity and membership organisation that works to give young people the speaking and listening skills and cross-cultural understanding they need to thrive. The ESU’s speech and debate programmes and international exchanges improve young people’s attainment, self-esteem and social skills, helping them to fulfil their potential and to change their lives and communities for the better.
We are looking for volunteers to help support and judge our competitions, please find details below:
- Schools’ Mace - The oldest debating competition for schools in England and Wales (ages 11-18)
- Public Speaking Competition - The largest such competition for schools in England and Wales (ages 13-16)
- Performing Shakespeare Competition - Students express their passion and imagination and compete for a chance to perform at Shakespeare’s Globe (ages 11-14)
You don’t need to be a debater or public speaker yourself – you just need to be enthusiastic about encouraging and inspiring young people to be the best they can be. There are opportunities throughout the year, each requiring around 4-5 hours’ commitment from late afternoon onwards. Full training is given, and it’s great fun, with students often covering thought-provoking topics from obesity and the NHS to Churchill and what defines happiness.
We look forward to welcoming you soon and can't wait to get you started!

Bright Futures UK works with young people who have been forced to take time out from education due to chronic illness. We provide programmes to help stimulate learning in addition to having a social aspect that offers respite to isolation these young people face due to their unfortunate circumstances.
We are urgently looking for a warm and energetic volunteer tutor to provide educational support and a fun, safe space for these young people. Tutoring experience is not essential as full training is given. Our sessions also are all currently online.
We need someone who is able to engage with young people in a positive and friendly way, helping them overcome their experiences and not feel defined by their illness. The young people we work with have missed so many experiences in school which we take for granted. The time you can offer to help fill in those missed periods is invaluable to their development. Your sessions will be fully supported by Bright Futures UK staff – from questions or queries, resources or materials or just to bounce an idea off the team, we’re here to help.
Volunteering with Bright Futures UK is something that can easily fit into your working day or a busy schedule with commitment starting from as little as 1 hour per week. We are so grateful for any support you might be able to provide, as are our young people.

We are asking for 30 minuets - one hour online a week.
DBS will be provided where needed.

We take children on voyages as readers and writers, and we’re on the lookout for volunteers to join our crew.
Who are The Literacy Pirates?
Through our after-school programme, we develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of children aged 9-13, who are falling behind in class and have fewer opportunities in their personal lives, so that they can succeed at school and beyond.
Children join our weekly afterschool program, either online or at our Pirate themed space in Hackney to practise their reading and writing. By welcoming them into our joyful spaces, publishing their work in the real world, and celebrating everything they do, we develop their literacy, confidence and perseverance.
What does a Volunteer Crewmate do?
As a Volunteer Crewmate, your role is to come along to our sessions and help children practise their reading and writing, 1:1 (in Hackney), 1:2 (online) or in small groups.
Sessions are led and managed by our staff team, which means you can dedicate the whole time you’re with us to providing direct support to the children.
You will:
-
Receive full training.
-
Help children practise reading and writing by providing constant encouragement, positivity and celebration of their achievements.
-
Take part in games and have fun!
-
Be invited to celebration events with the children to see the difference that you’ve made.
We offer:
-
Employment references, for volunteers who have been with us for 12 sessions.
-
Work placements for students.
-
Tempo Time Credits – for every session you volunteer, you will be rewarded with credits to redeem against days out, trips and extra-curricular opportunities for your spare time.
-
Socials and extra opportunities.
What are we looking for?
We ask volunteers to give just two afternoons every half-term, although you are welcome to volunteer more if you choose to!
Sessions run every weekday from 3:45 to 6:45 p.m. (in Hackney) or 3:45 to 6:15 p.m. (online), and you will have the flexibility to select which sessions you would like to attend.
No experience is required to become a volunteer – just a desire to help children develop their reading and writing skills! Full training is provided.
All we ask is that you:
-
Are aged 16+
-
Must be a UK resident
-
Complete a DBS check (we cover the cost of this)
