The Dipex Charity helps millions of individuals and professionals learn about the experience of health and social care. Through our websites healthtalk .org and socialcaretalk .org we publish people’s real stories, as collected by academic researchers.

We cover more than 100 different health and social care issues and help people feel less alone and better prepared for what they’re going through. Our resources are also used as teaching resources all over the world and in training professionals working in health, social care and the public sector. 

About the role

Due to our current Treasurer’s term of office reaching an end in December 2024, we are seeking a treasurer to join the Trustee board of a small online health charity that helps millions of people each year.

The charity is at an exciting time, expanding our ways of working and developing new revenue streams. As a Treasurer you will provide support with financial accounting and reporting. In addition, as a trustee you will provide guidance, expertise and support to the team and help ensure that the charity is meeting its aims. There will be opportunities to get involved in discrete projects and you may be asked for ad hoc advice or input from time to time. 

We are looking for someone who can commit to meet with the rest of the trustee board and leadership team four times a year. Meetings last for around 3 hours and usually take place in Oxford on a weekday afternoon.  The Treasurer will also be required to meet with the CEO and finance team (online), prior to each trustee meeting, to finalise quarterly finance reports.

The treasurer role is unremunerated, but we will provide administrative support and full induction for the appointee.

Do you have specific retail skills to donate? We're also looking for volunteers with skills and ideas around visual merchandising, identifying stock generation channels and raising awareness of our charity shops. Using your local knowledge, you could help to maximise the shop’s potential.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Maintain the shop floor and provide excellent customer service to our shoppers

Falkirk and District Association for Mental Health, known locally as Falkirk’s Mental Health Association or FDAMH for those facing mental health challenges in the community, promotes positive wellbeing through a range of services, training, and education. They assist individuals on their unique journey of recovery, focusing on self-discovery and personal growth.

As advocates for change, FDAMH works tirelessly to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues, prevent deterioration in wellbeing, and provide essential support, education, and training. The team at FDAMH is diverse, bringing together a wide range of skills, experiences, and backgrounds, all united by a shared commitment to making a positive impact in the community. Their services, including one-to-one support, groupwork, and training, are available to individuals aged 13 and above across Falkirk and its district areas. Through a holistic approach, FDAMH ensures tailored support is provided at the right time, empowering individuals on their journey to recovery and wellbeing.

FDAMH is currently seeking a new Chair to join their Board at an exciting time of growth and development, coinciding with the development of their new Strategic Plan for the next three years. This role presents a significant opportunity to contribute to shape the future of the organisation.

The Role of Chair:

The Chair will hold the Board and Senior Leadership Team accountable for FDAMH’s mission and vision, providing inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees. They will ensure each trustee fulfils their governance responsibilities effectively, supporting and occasionally challenging the Chief Executive Officer to ensure effective compliance and operations of the organisation. The Chair will be a strong and visible ambassador of the charity, working closely with the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team.

The ideal candidate will have senior strategic leadership experience within an organisation, preferably in the third sector, with a proven track record of success. Experience in charity governance and with Boards of Trustees is essential. You will demonstrate a strong passion for and commitment to FDAMH’s mission and objectives, possessing the personal gravitas to lead a significant charity within the local community. Strong leadership, motivational, and collaborative skills are crucial, alongside excellent interpersonal and relationship-building abilities. A broad understanding of the third sector and its current challenges is also required.

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Chelmsley Wood Furniture shop. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers
• Accepting and sorting donated stock
• Pricing donations for sale
• Working on the till

Our shops are open Monday to Saturday (some open on Sundays too) 9am to 5pm.  You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but it would be great if you could support in the shop for at least 3 hours a week.

The Thalidomide Trust supports a unique community of people with disabilities and helps them to live their best lives. Could you bring your Finance & Governance expertise to their board as a Trustee?

The Thalidomide Trust is a unique organisation supporting 430 beneficiaries, now all in their 60s, born with disabilities as a result of their mother taking the drug, thalidomide, during pregnancy. Their physical disabilities include limb damage, hearing and visual impairment, brain and sensory impairment and damage to internal organs. They are a remarkable group of people, who have achieved a great deal despite often living with extreme levels of disability.

Our beneficiaries have very complex and varied needs which are increasing as they age.  The Trustees provide effective governance and oversight to ensure the Trust understands these needs and has adequate and well-managed resources to meet them.  

We are looking for an experienced finance professional with an understanding of charity accounting procedures and governance to join our Board of Trustees*. You will help ensure we provide the best possible future for our beneficiaries in the next phase of their lives.

We are a Charity with secure funding in place for the lifetime of our beneficiaries. A recent Independent Governance review reflected the high level of skills and experience of our Board and excellent standards of governance.

You will bring the following skills and experience to the role:

· Professional accountancy qualification and strong technical accounting skills.

· Understanding of the principles of investment management.

· Experience of working in a senior financial position

· Good current knowledge of charity accounting processes and reporting requirements.

· Sound current knowledge of Charity Law and Charity Governance frameworks.

· Well-developed interpersonal skills and an ability to develop positive relationships with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

Experience of monitoring investment performance is desirable but not essential. However, you should be willing to learn new skills and be able to devote approximately 15 to 20 days per annum to the Trust – within this time specifically be available to attend three full day Board meetings, at least four half-day Finance Committee meetings and one beneficiary event each year.

This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.

The Coroners' Courts Support Service (CCSS) is a registered Charity whose trained volunteers give emotional and practical support to bereaved families and other witnesses attending an inquest.

We need volunteers to provide emotional support and practical help to bereaved families, witnesses and others attending Inquests at Coroners' Court. Our volunteers at court also provide help and assistance to the Coroners' Officers, as and when required.

We are looking for reliable, supportive people with excellent communication skills. A mature and calm attitude is needed in order to be able to talk to people during a sometimes bewildering and emotional experience. Volunteers must be willing to undergo a period of observations and shadowing, as well as attend a 3 day training course. A minimum commitment of one day (9:00am - 5:00pm) per fortnight is asked for. Training and mentoring is provided and travel expenses to the court are reimbursed.

New volunteers should possess good communication and listening skills and the ability to empathise with people they support.

The Pelvic Radiation Disease Association (PRDA) is looking for a Chair of Trustees to provide strategic leadership for the charity, working in partnership with our Operations Manager and supported by a committed team of Trustees.

Who we are

Pelvic Radiation Disease (PRD) is a long-term side-effect (‘late effect’) of pelvic radiotherapy treatment affecting an estimated 100,000 people in the UK.  People affected by PRD often have a complex set of symptoms affecting the bowel, bladder, sexual function or other functions for many years after radiotherapy, sometimes only appearing several years after radiotherapy treatment

PRDA is a small UK charity whose objectives are to see that the effects of PRD are minimised, that people affected by PRD are given the best possible care and treatment, and that PRD is accepted as a serious problem and given the attention it deserves.

Duties of the Chair

In addition to the duties of a Trustee, the Chair will:

• Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that PRDA achieves its mission.
• Work in partnership with the Operations Manager and team to achieve our mission.
• Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.
• Optimise the relationship between the board and PRDA’s staff and volunteers.
• Plan and chair the board meetings and the AGM, with others as appropriate.
• Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for PRDA. 

What PRDA is looking for

Each trustee must have:

• a commitment to the vision and aims of the Pelvic Radiation Disease Association
• willingness to meet the minimum time requirement 
• integrity

• Understanding of the impact of Pelvic Radiation Disease on people’s lives either through personal or professional connections, or be willing to learn about this;

• Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by PRDA (helpline, support groups, online support, health professional engagement, awareness-raising) and/or fundraising for a small charity, and
• Leadership skills.

Community is at the heart of everything that we do at Tenovus Cancer Care to help those affected by cancer. Our aim is simple – to deliver a vision where fewer people get cancer and those that do receive equal access to excellent treatment. However, we can’t do this without your help. Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference. We need you to help process our stock donations ready for the shop floor.

What will I be doing?

Accepting donations from the public

Sorting through donation bags

Hanging, ticketing and steaming stock

Cleaning and processing non-clothing stock

Maintaining high levels of stock room standards

Generating add-on sales and Gift Aid conversion through high levels of customer service

How much time do I need to commit?

We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to.

Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you visit the Shop Management team in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you.

Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to advise and help you select products you can use.

Assistance with transporting and setting up our event gazebo for North Wales events.

What will I be doing?

Transporting the gazebo to events when required – You must have a car that will fit a  4 x 4 metres gazebo. It would need a large car to transport

The volunteer would be required to get to the event before it starts, it takes about an hour to setup, then take away at end of the event. The volunteer would be helped to construct & pack away.

What skills do I need?

Good verbal skills

How much time do I need to commit?

The events happen more in the summer. Possibly looking at 8-10 events a year in the North Wales area.

You’ll be provided with an in person brief when volunteering, and a written brief too.

Trustee Role Description

As a trustee, you will be helping to shape and grow Sheffield Hospitals Charity so that we can provide more support to Sheffield’s NHS and therefore our loved ones, in this city that we call home. Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Sheffield Hospitals Charity achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the charity has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable the charity to grow and thrive, and through this, fund more support for patients and staff, life-changing research and more, across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust. Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Trustee Duties

• Support and provide advice on Sheffield Hospitals Charity’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.

• Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

• Oversee Sheffield Hospitals Charity’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.

• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

Terms of appointment Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, renewal for two further terms to a maximum of nine years. This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Time commitment:

• Attending five Board meetings annually (15hours in total). Currently meetings are held in person during working hours at the Charity’s offices. Trustees join remotely via MS Teams when they are unable to join in person.

• Attending on a maximum of three annual strategy and planning days.

• Annual one-to-one meeting with the Chair of the Board. Commitee membership Ad hoc and occasional support through working groups and / or support to the executive team. At present Sheffield Hospitals Charity has two sub-committees: Grants Investment Panel, and Finance and Performance Committee, which meet six times and five times each year respectively. Skills and knowledge needed • Sound understanding and knowledge of the NHS

About the board and Trustee role 

Trustees are volunteers who oversee the strategic direction of the charity and ensure its compliance with regulators and the law. They are also ambassadors for the charity; and they provide the staff team, which does the day-to-day work, with both scrutiny and support. 

The full board meets quarterly. Two meetings focus on ‘business’ – approving budgets and policies, making key decisions, etc. The other two are more discursive, covering strategic issues. 

We have four sub-committees: Finance Audit Investment & Risk, Impact & Income Development, Research & Policy, and Governance & People. Trustees are generally invited to sit on at least one sub-committee, which gives them more detailed insight into the charity’s work in that area. A number of trustees choose to sit on multiple sub-committees (there is no upper limit) and trustees are also welcome to attend any sub-committee, for example as a one-off, to see what happens or if they have an interest in a particular agenda item. Sub-committees also meet quarterly. 

And there is usually one strategy day a year. 

We currently have ten trustees on our board, with skills and experience in charity leadership and governance, addictions psychiatry, academic research, public affairs, policing, and marketing. We are looking to a recruit a further one trustee.

Trustees’ Role Description and Person Specification 

Being a Trustee of Alcohol Change UK 

Our Board of Trustees has overall responsibility for the UK’s leading charity in the field of alcohol harm. We are a registered charity (No. 1140287) and a company limited by guarantee (No. 07462605). Our trustees are also members of the charity and directors of the company. Governance is in accordance with both charity and company law. This role description uses the term ‘trustee’ to refer to all three roles (trustee, member, director). 

As well as overseeing proper governance, the Board is responsible for strategic decision-making, upholding the reputation of the charity and ensuring that it delivers on its charitable object to reduce alcohol harm. As a trustee you will share this collective responsibility and bring your personal skills, experience and connections to bear.

This is an exciting time for the charity as we are in the first year of our newly approved five-year strategy from Apr 2024 to Mar 2029. Our new trustees will play a key role in helping us deliver on this strategy. 

The Duties and Responsibilities of Trustees 

Governing Documents 

Our primary governing document is the Memorandum and Articles of Association which sets out the formal duties and responsibilities of the trustees, directors and members. It is complemented by our Scheme of Delegation. We have also adopted the Code of Good Governance, and remain compliant with the rules of the Charity Commissioners and Companies House. 

General Duties and Responsibilities 

The following are general duties, based on documentation from the Charity Commission and Companies House: 

1. To act in the interests of the charity’s objects – that is, its cause and its beneficiaries. 
2. To act reasonably and prudently in all matters. 
3. To avoid personal views and prejudices affecting your decision-making. 
4. To protect – and actively promote – the property, interests and reputation of the charity. 
5. To set the strategic direction, provide strategic oversight, and make critical decisions. 
6. To always make decisions collectively as a board and in particular to actively support all board decisions (that are made in accordance with the charity’s constitution) regardless of your personal position on such decisions. 
7. To understand how the charity works, including being fully aware of the charity’s general risks and its financial position. 
8. To ensure compliance with all statutory requirements as set out by Companies House and the Charity Commission and by other relevant statutory bodies and legislation. 
9. To challenge and support the CEO and, through them, the broader staff team.

2. To endeavour to achieve at least 75% attendance at Board meetings. In accordance with the governing documents, trustees missing three consecutive board meetings without reasonable cause will normally be asked to step down. 
3. To undertake training as required and to participate in an annual development appraisal. 
4. To join at least one of the charity’s four sub-committees. 
5. To represent Alcohol Change UK at events and to act as a positive ambassador for Alcohol Change UK amongst its key audiences. 
6. To understand and respect the boundary between governance and the operational matters that are delegated to the staff team. 
7. To respond to Alcohol Change UK correspondence in a timely manner.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTr) is the largest Trust in the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System providing district general hospital services to around 450,000 people in Preston, South Ribble and Chorley and specialist care to 1.8 million people across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

About the role.

With the changing health and social care landscape, the Chair will play a key leadership role at place and system level providing leadership to support the integration and sustainability of services across geographies and organisational boundaries.

The Board has responsibility for setting LTHTr’s strategic direction. and this responsibility is undertaken with due regard to the views of Governors who are vital to ensuring the views of the public, patients, stakeholders and staff are reflected in plans. The Board also listens to the views of clinical teams in deciding what the Trust’s priorities must be.

Who we are looking for

• Someone with extensive Board-level experience leading (as Chair or CEO) a large, complex public sector organisation and, ideally, experience as a Chair of an NHS Trust/Foundation Trust.
• Ability to build and lead an effective organisation and culture across the Board, Council, and Trust.
• Passion and compassion for healthcare, belief in the values and principles of the NHS and a local and national understanding of the NHS.
• Evidenced abilities in good governance and undertaking legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities as an NED and, ideally, Board Chair.
• Membership eligibility for LTHTr.

Particular emphasis is placed on strong leadership abilities, demonstration of appropriate behaviours, good communication skills and an awareness of strategic direction.
