2024 is a great time to join the Board of Dementia Concern. Experience of Charity Boards is not needed to become a Trustee. If you have both Trustee and leadership experience, you may be our next Chair! Either way, we’d love to meet you, just send in your CV.
Who we are
At Dementia Concern, our primary goal is to empower those living with dementia, here in their local community. With fifty staff and a turnover of £1.1 million, we are exclusively for the people of Ealing, from Southall over to Acton. Their rich diversity is reflected in our staff and clients.
Established in 1982, almost forty years on we are still committed to our central strategic goal to provide amazing person-centred care and support for people living with dementia.
The role
We’re looking to recruit:
Up to 3x Trustees from diverse backgrounds with experience or skills in: Safeguarding, Quality of Healthcare, Law, Health & Safety, Fundraising, Cybersecurity, HR and EDI.
and
1x Chair of the Board
(Trustees do not need to live in London, once they are able to attend two board meetings in person per year, usually held on Wednesdays at 6pm)
Over the last five years of our forty year history, Dementia Concern has been on a mission to reach every person in Ealing living with dementia. We are over halfway there. This Board recruitment campaign is a chance for new Trustees to help us drive forward the charity’s strategy 2024-27 and help us deepen our impact.
A couple of our Trustees will be coming to the end of their second (three year) term on the Board, so we’re seeking to recruit additional trustees and our next chair; our former Chair served from 2020 to 2024 leading the charity skillfully, including through the uncertainties of community healthcare in a pandemic.

To express interest in these volunteer positions on the Board, we are not asking candidates for a formal application in the first instance. We are keenly aware that many good Trustee candidates are very busy people, so we are keeping it simple.
If you would like to have an informal conversation over the phone about these Board vacancies, please email Clare Brooks, the Clerk to the Board who can arrange this for you at a day and time of your convenience:
Please note we will be longlisting throughout the campaign, so get in touch soon.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a further stage in the recruitment, which will include a formal application. This will include some due diligence checks, and an initial phone call with one of the interview panel, to tell us about themselves and find out more about the role(s) of Trustee and Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Then, for those invited to the final stage, and wishing to progress, there will be in person meetings at our building: 223 Windmill Road, Ealing, London W5 4DJ which are scheduled for Thursday 24th and Friday 25th October.
New Trustees will be invited to the in-person Board on 13th November at 6pm in Ealing, with some social time included in order to meet Trustees and the Exec.
All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence

You can make a contribution to the future of the Bar
The Bar Standards Board, the independent regulatory body for barristers in England and Wales, is seeking new lay and barrister members.
The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is the independent regulator for barristers and related specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales. We exercise the regulatory functions delegated to us by the Bar Council in line with the regulatory objectives laid down by the Legal Services Act 2007. The primary role of the Board is to ensure that we act in the public interest in accordance with those objectives. To that end, we set education and training requirements, establish and maintain professional standards, authorise organisations, and deal with questions of professional misconduct. We are governed by a Board of 11 members, made up of five practising barristers and six lay people, including the Chair.
We seek to appoint two lay Board members and one barrister Board member who will work with others on the Board to lead the organisation through a time of far reaching change in the legal services market and its regulation. Over the next ten years, barristers in England and Wales will continue to face major challenges. These include levels of public funding, changing consumer demands and expectations, and technological advances. The BSB must ensure that its regulation is risk-based, proportionate and agile in a changing legal services and regulatory landscape. It must also seek to promote equality and diversity at the Bar.
To meet these challenges the Bar Standards Board itself is reforming to become more proactive and consumer-focused in its approach to regulation and more efficient in its delivery of its regulatory functions.
We want the Bar to be as fully diverse as the society it serves, and we strive for diverse representation to be reflected across all areas of our organisation, including on our Board. We welcome applications from anyone regardless of age, experience, sexuality, religion, beliefs, disability or neurodiversity, ethnicity, race, gender, gender identity, marital status and socioeconomic background.
The Board aims to have barrister members with a wide variety of practice backgrounds. We would particularly welcome applicants from the Circuits, from the Employed Bar and from the Young Bar.
For lay members, the Board is especially keen to appoint someone with experience of consumer advocacy, policy and/or engagement and someone with strong commercial expertise (ideally that would include change management in a commercial context as well as risk and finance at a strategic level).
You will have an awareness of the issues facing the justice system and the legal services market. You should be able to provide high-level strategic thinking, advice and leadership on the development and implementation of policy relating to the work of the BSB. You will also understand the role of non-executive directors in supporting and challenging the executive team to achieve the BSB’s objectives.
For further information, please visit the opportunities page on the Inclusive Boards website
If you wish to apply for this position, please supply a detailed CV, a completed cover letter form and supporting details form.
All candidates for the lay member roles must meet the definition of a “lay person” as defined by the Legal Services Act. They must never have been authorised to supply legal services by an approved regulator (e.g. as a barrister, solicitor, legal executive etc.) in England or Wales or have been a Scottish solicitor or advocate or a Northern Irish solicitor or barrister.
All candidates for the barrister member role must be a practising barrister ie must be authorised to practise by the Bar Standards Board.
Closing date: 23.59pm 29 September 2024
Disabled candidates who require reasonable adjustments should contact Inclusive Boards . The Bar Standards Board is Disability Confident. Disabled candidates who meet the essential criteria for this role will be guaranteed a first stage interview under this scheme.

Do you have the financial management skills and enthusiasm to help an organisation that supports communities and other charities in West Berkshire ?
You could be the next Treasurer for the Volunteer Centre West Berkshire.
Set up in 1974 to support local communities and charities, primarily in West Berkshire, we became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2014. We continue to match local people to local need, with our comprehensive volunteer recruitment service, our Handybus, voluntary car and Shopmobility schemes, and our general advice and bespoke support for local voluntary and charity groups.
Our income in 2023 was £270k, matched by almost-similar spending, so we’re not a large organisation, with our finances managed day-to-day by our Finance Officer and CEO.
The role and what we are looking for in a new Treasurer
As we celebrate our 50th year of voluntary success, we’ve recruited other new trustees and are now looking for a Treasurer to take over from our longstanding Treasurer, who is retiring after 17 years’ service.
Our Board includes people with experience and skills in governing our charity and responding to the needs of local people and local organisations. We expect our Treasurer to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries, awareness of the needs in West Berkshire, as well as provide strategic overview and guidance to our Board on the charity's financial standing and future planning.
Although we’d welcome your financial qualification, that’s not a requirement, as our finances aren’t complex. An understanding of how charity finance works would be beneficial of course, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees. Support from our CEO and Finance Officer will always be available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day finances.
It would be great if you have prior experience of charity trusteeship, but that’s not absolutely essential; we can provide and access training focused on trustee duties and responsibilities. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support for you as a new trustee. You may find membership of the Honorary Treasurer’s Forum of benefit.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We welcome fresh expertise and experience from a variety of backgrounds to our charity, as we want to expand the diversity, in all meanings of the word, of our Board to reflect all our communities.
The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees will not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, regular contact and liaison with other trustees, and our CEO and Finance Officer is expected.
We ask for at least two hours of your time per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc., which will increase at year-end and for our AGM. You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business and Board meetings are run that way.
How to apply
This appointment is being managed for us by inVOLve Community Services, another charity-support organisation, who offer a no-obligation discussion by phone or video. A detailed Role Description and Skills Specification can be made available to you upon request.
Trustee appointments are subject to satisfactory references.
Your CV or similar will be read by our existing trustees, and an interview offered as soon as mutually convenient.
I need to know more
Contact Mike Allen, Trustee Recruitment & Governance, via Quick Apply below, for more information and arrange to have a no-obligation initial informal discussion (Teams/Zoom/phone) and support in your application.
