Who we are
Essex Gardens Trust was set up in 1996 with the aim of protecting the special and historic gardens and landscapes in our county. We do this through: i) research, ii) conservation and iii) education.
Our research team has recently completed a funded project to identify and record historic gardens and landscapes in the City of Southend. The results of this research has been given to both the County planning authority and the Essex Records Office where it will join our existing inventories.
The role
As Chair of Essex Gardens Trust you will be responsible through and with the Management Committee for:
- Providing overall leadership and oversight to EGT
- The overall health of EGT and its ability to continue to deliver the objectives for which it was founded;
- Chairing meetings of the Management Committee, ensuring that they are run efficiently and that decisions made are in accordance with good governance and are clearly recorded;
- Understanding the role and activities of each of the Trust’s core functions and, with this knowledge, being open to new opportunities for EGT to develop and extend its influence and activities;
- Being an ambassador for the Trust;
- Maintaining and developing external contacts and relationships with organisations such as, but not exclusively, The Gardens Trust, Essex Records Office, ARU Writtle and other County Gardens’ Trusts;
- Maintaining contacts with and attend relevant meetings of the movement’s national body, The Gardens Trust, and other external bodies.
You should have at least three years’ experience of the charity sector as a trustee or senior employee and be able to demonstrate a keen interest in gardens and landscapes; plus…

The Management Committee meets six times a year for about two hours, either by Zoom or at ARU Writtle. There is usually an annual meeting of County Chairs organised by The Garden Trust. Including these meetings, your time commitment would be on average eight to ten hours per month.

Esteem works with young adults aged 14 - 26 to build lasting self-Esteem and stronger communities through group activities and 1-2-1 support.
Esteem creates spaces where everyone matters.
Esteem works with over 200 young adults annually across all of Sussex who face barriers to achieving their life goals. We have a base in Shoreham and offer a variety of different opportunities, including social drop-in sessions, mentoring, wellbeing sessions, volunteering and counselling. This voluntary role of Trustee Safeguarding Lead is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the effective implementation of safeguarding policies and procedures within Esteem. About the Chair Role:

About the Role
As a result of increased awareness and signposting for individuals receiving a positive CACNA1C diagnosis, our community is increasing in size. Therefore, we are seeking new Trustees who will take an active role in the board, bringing new skills and ideas for how to support our community, advocating for improvement to CACNA1C diagnosis, outcomes and quality of life and to support CACNA1C research initiatives.
Our new Trustees will be responsible for setting the overall strategy and direction for TSA, as well as monitoring the charity’s activity to evaluate progress towards our objectives and goals.
This can include making sure the charity complies with regulations, overseeing financial management and monitoring financial performance, creating and implementing policies and procedures to mitigate risk, and supporting the charity’s operations. Additionally, you will also have the chance to help develop fundraising strategies, including applying for funding and grants to support TSA’s work. What are you looking for in candidates?

As a small team, we are ideally seeking those who have prior experience of being a Trustee at a UK based charity or working within the UK charity sector, who can bring demonstratable experience of navigating the challenges that face small charities.However, we also welcome applications from candidates with an interest in or prior knowledge of charity law and compliance; the change management process; volunteer management; financial planning, processing and auditing; regulatory or policy issues; data management or fundraising. UK based candidates are preferred, however this is not essential.

Time commitment
Our Trustees are expected to attend six board meetings each year. These normally take place on a Monday evening, alternating between 5-7pm and 7pm-9pm, at our office in Esher. All Citizens Advice Trustees are required to complete a small number of e-learning courses each year.

The Merchant’s House is embarking on an exciting new phase as we embed our new strategic plan, having opened for full visitor access for the first time in 2024. SEED Madagascar is looking for two new Trustees to work on its Board of Trustees and with the Managing Director and his team. One role is to be the Vice Chair to support our Chair across her role, and the second role is to bring fundraising expertise to support SEED in its vital work in Madagascar.
SEED is growing and rising to the challenges that the country and its people are facing, and these Trustees will play an important role in SEED’s development.
SEED delivers impactful projects with communities in the southeast of Madagascar in the fields of community health, sustainable livelihoods, conservation and school infrastructure. More recently SEED has responded to the famine affecting many families in the areas it works with emergency food distribution.
The new Trustees will bring experience of working at a senior level in the not-for-profit sector. The Vice Chair will bring governance experience, and the fundraising trustee will have experience of fundraising in organsiations of a similar size. We are looking for a passion for, and understanding of, international development, along with strong people skills and a good grasp of strategic planning.

Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.
Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role requires an ongoing time commitment, usually about 2-3 days per month. In addition, you would need to organise and attend regular meetings throughout the year.
What would you be doing?
- Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
- Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
- Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
- Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
- Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
- Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
- Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
- Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.
- Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s Central Office
- Overseeing a programme of meetings including an AGM, branch meetings, committee meetings, training etc.
- Supporting any salaried branch staff and ensuring that their line management arrangements are working appropriately.
- Resolve any complaints that are suitable for local resolution in accordance with SSAFA’s Complaints Policy and procedures, referring upwards any that are not suitable for local resolution.
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

It’s important that our Trustees and Non-Executive Directors reflect the community that Devon Air Ambulance serves and bring different experiences and backgrounds that add a huge amount of value to our organisation. By having diverse Boards, for both the Charity and Trading Company, we will be better able to make great decisions, be more innovative and creative. DAA has been through a significant period of change in the past few years with becoming a Care Quality Commission regulated independent healthcare provider, welcoming a new H145 helicopter and three critical car cars into service, an organisational restructure, not to mention of course a pandemic that impacted every aspect of our organisation. We continue to plan for growth and development of our service with exciting plans for a new HQ and operations centre that are in the early stages of development.
We are looking for people who can support our journey, be critical friends and help shape our organisation to be fit for the future. We would also like to receive Expressions of Interest for the Chair of the DAA Trading Company Board.
