They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the charity has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the Senior Management Team to enable the BDA to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.
Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Our work is organized across three main operational areas—Advice and Casework, education, Training and Employment, and children and Young People—and a crosscutting area: Advocacy, Research, and Campaigning.
With 40 years of experience, we support over 4,000 people every year.
Being a Trustee
IRMO’s Board of Trustees is made up of six to nine Trustees, who work together to ensure the charity is run properly. As a trustee, you will have the opportunity to support IRMO’s strategic development and oversee its finances. Trustees meet every two months (usually online in the evening) and are asked to commit an additional eight to ten hours between meetings to follow up on actions and provide advice and input on strategic documents and areas of work relevant to their areas of expertise.
General Responsibilities
- Stay up to date with and assess the political, economic and social contexts that affect IRMO’s work
- Support the development of and approve IRMO’s key strategic documents
- Annually review and approve IRMO’s budget
- Review, update and approve major policies
- Approve salaries, benefits, terms and conditions for staff
- Ensure that IRMO’s financial structure is adequate for its current needs and long-term strategy
- Ensure that the organisation has the necessary resources in place to meet its long-term goals
- Ensure that the Board of Trustees is adequately informed of the condition of the organisation and its operations
- Ensure that published reports adequately reflect the nature of the services and the financial condition of the organisation
- Approve major actions of the organisation, such as capital expenditure over authorised limits and major changes in activities and services
- Review staff results in relation to IRMO’s aims and objectives, as well as annual and long-term goals
- Appoint, supervise, support, and appraise IRMO’s Director
- Provide candid and constructive criticism, advice, comments and praise
- Ensure that the Director has established appropriate policies to define and identify conflicts of interest throughout the organisation and are administering and enforcing those policies
- Appoint independent examiners/auditors subject to approval by members
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation affecting the organisation
- Annually review the performance of the Board of Trustees and take steps to improve its performance

Are you looking for a flexible volunteering role, which still makes a real difference? Rainbows supports around 750 babies, children and young people, throughout the East Midlands, each year; but the annual statutory funding we receive would only keep Rainbows open for 7 weeks. Therefore, our Community Fundraisers play a vital role in helping us to, quite literally, keep our doors open.
With over 100 fundraising events and activities each year, there are lots of different ways you could help us raise vital money to help us brighten short lives – there really is something for everyone! Not only is it a great opportunity to connect with a range of different people; it is also one of our most flexible volunteering roles, allowing volunteers to choose events which fit around their schedule and commitments.

Typical tasks the role could involve:

We would love to welcome you as part of our volunteering team to support the activities in our new Shop and Post Office at the Soane Stable Yard. New products are being created which will appeal to visitors to the Soane Stable Yard and those taking guided tours of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Together with the Post Office, the new shop will also offer a vital service to staff, Pensioners and Pensioners' families and the local community. The new Shop and Post Office will open at the Soane Stable Yard in early September 2024. We will need help to prepare the Shop for opening during August 2024.

The Dementia Wellbeing Service provides practical and emotional support to help older people live independently and safely at home for as long as possible, stay socially engaged and carry on doing what they love. The service supports Camden residents over the age of 55 in the early or moderate stages of dementia.

At Rainbows, we support around 750 babies, children and young people with serious and terminal conditions throughout the East Midlands, providing support at our Hospice, in local hospitals and at home. As part of this, our Family Support Team work with families to navigate through the emotions of caring for a child who has a life-limiting condition.
As these families can be based all across the region, Keep in Touch Volunteers play a vital role in connecting families with the Hospice. Volunteers do this by making an outreach telephone call to a family; checking-in with them and signposting them to any wider support which may be needed, as well as any support or services which Rainbows may be able to provide.
Typical tasks the role could involve:
- Making outreach telephone calls to Rainbows families.
- Checking on a family’s welfare and alerting them to available support if needed.
- Relaying any concerns to the Family Support Team.
- Regularly submitting an activity log summarising their calls so we can make sure everyone is receiving the help they need.

This role is ideal for someone with excellent interpersonal and listening skills who can think on their feet. Given the nature of our work, empathy and sensitivity towards the needs of children, young people, and their families are crucial. You'll be using your computer skills to record outcomes of your conversations in our database, so a basic confidence with technology is a must. Understanding the importance of confidentiality, boundaries, and safeguarding is essential within Rainbows. While previous experience in caring for others is beneficial, it is not a requirement.

Home-Start believes that the earliest years make the biggest impact. Our work is with families who have (at least) one child under five and that are facing challenges such as loneliness, postnatal depression, or multiple births. We train volunteers to visit the family once a week, supporting them in a variety of emotional and practical ways. This is for 2 to 3 hours a week, one day per week.
By visiting a family in their own home, our volunteers represent a lifeline to families who are struggling to cope. They offer non-judgemental, confidential support in a way that is tailored to the needs of that individual family. By doing this, our volunteers support them to grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children, and forge links within their local community.
Our approach works because our volunteers have parenting experience or experience with children, and they understand the stresses and strains of life. They are there to listen; not to judge.
To volunteer with Home-Start, we ask that you are a good listener, have an interest in supporting families, and are able to volunteer in the daytime for a minimum of 6 months. You should have experience with children/families, a desire to help and support others and have a 'can-do' attitude.
You might not think it, but your lived experience, your unique background, and the languages you speak, could hugely benefit the families we support. You can work alongside them to help them regain their confidence and resilience. In doing so, you can directly increase the chance of local children growing up happier and healthier.
Full training is provided (25- hour course) and an enhanced DBS check will be required.

Job summary: The role involves serving on the committee of WTRRP, supporting the Committee and its Chair in the overall management of the charity.
WTRRP is a registered charity (England, reg no 1162226) that exists to support people in the Watford Borough and Three Rivers District of West Hertfordshire, who do not yet have status in the UK, or who have specific needs related to their application process or welfare. Currently WTRRP has around 160 live cases (defined as a family unit or individual currently in need of our help).
WTRRP is run by a Committee, which includes several Trustees. The Committee meets typically every 2 months and also for an Annual General Meeting, but it also provides day-to-day support to our staff members (Casework Coordinator and part-time Office Manager) and to our ~80 volunteers.
The main roles of the charity are to run a drop-in session every Tuesday (at St Mary’s Church in central Watford), a social hub at the same time, and to provide financial and other assistance to its clients for their application process for leave to remain in the UK.
Principal responsibilities:
• Be part of the committee, supporting the organisation as it grows and develops.
• Support the Chair in meetings, including running occasional meetings where the Chair cannot be present
• Attend the Tuesday hub / drop-in to support both activities as required.
• Listen, encourage and empower our staff and volunteers to provide support to our clients and adapt our services according to our client needs.
• Support WTRRP’s other activities where appropriate: these include parties and sports events for our clients’ children.
• Be aware and report any safeguarding concerns immediately to WTRRP Safeguarding Lead and/or a member of the Committee.
• Represent WTRRP and work constructively as part of a WTRRP team.
Desirable:
• An understanding of immigration matters and keep abreast of safeguarding matters.
• Be able to offer 4-6 hours a week of your time.
• Attend volunteers’ and training meetings.
Skills / experience:
• Experience in management of people, especially volunteers

Family Friends carefully recruits, trains, and matches volunteers with families in Central-West London. Our befriending volunteers offer long-term practical and emotional support based on each family's unique needs and potential.
