What is a Community Volunteer?
Community Volunteers provide practical help to serving people and their families. Whilst a friendly chat is an important aspect of the role you will also be providing some hands-on support like a lift to a medical appointment or help with shopping.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. Armed Forces life can bring its challenges when a loved-one is deployed overseas, or a family must move to a new location. Some people find themselves facing illness, bereavement or unexpected financial problems. Day-to-day activities can become difficult without a little help. That’s where you come in. Could you spare a few hours a week to lend a helping hand to a family in your serving community?
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
The essential part of the role is visiting beneficiaries, so you will be expected to travel to meet people at home or elsewhere.
Some volunteers will visit more people than others. Whilst you may visit a beneficiary, or family, on a regular basis support is always time-limited.
What would you be doing?
- Contacting beneficiaries and arranging to meet them at their home or in a suitable place depending on their needs
- Providing practical help like lifts to appointments, going to the shops, washing-up, running errands etc.
- Providing time limited, relief care for children (additional training is required for those undertaking this type of support).
- Helping people to think about how to access other support if needed and signposting as required
- Reporting any safeguarding concerns in line with SSAFA’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Keeping in touch with your Community Volunteer Coordinator, attending supervision and keeping a record of your visits.
- Keeping up to date with training and SSAFA news so that you are best able to support beneficiaries
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA
- Adhering to SSAFA’s policies and procedures at all times, including SSAFA’s: safeguarding; equality, diversity and inclusion; health & safety; data protection; confidentiality

What about training and support?
- One day training course for Community Volunteers. The option to pursue this course further and gain an accredited qualification in community volunteering. Additional training is required for those wishing to undertake the Relief Care Service for Children.

- Support from SSAFA’s Welfare Team and Volunteer Experience Team based at our Central Office
- Online training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date with how to keep clients, their families and personal information safe
- Refresher training to keep your knowledge and skills up to date
- Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
- Volunteers will be covered by SSAFA's Public Liability insurance while carrying out their role.
What are we looking for?
- Friendly and approachable people with good listening skills, patience and empathy
- Respectful and non-judgemental approach with beneficiaries, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues
- Understanding of the need to remain within the boundaries of the role with regards to friendship, finances etc.
- Practice confidentiality and data protection in line with SSAFA’s policies
- Good IT skills e.g. ability to use Outlook – you will receive your own SSAFA email address.
- Ability to travel to meet beneficiaries
- A willingness to adhere to all relevant organisational policies and procedures.
Depending on the needs of the team, this role would suit someone who would like to volunteer a few hours each week.

We are setting up a poetry group here at Birch Lane and are looking for a volunteer to help facilitate the group. Your volunteer role will include promoting the group to residents and encouraging attendance. Helping to set up the room for the session including moving tables and chairs if necessary. Set up any equipment for the group, searching poetry websites and printing out copies of the poem, and connecting to speakers to play audiobooks, being comfortable with IT equipment and navigating the internet would be a plus for this role. You will also make refreshments and tidy away at the end of the session.
During the session you will read the poems to the group and start the discussion afterwards with a couple of questions prepared to get people talking. You will need to be comfortable reading aloud to a group of people and as a poetry group facilitator you will be skilled in steering the discussion and keeping the conversation on topic and flowing. You will have a love of poetry and an interest in sharing this with group members. The group will run collaboratively and you will choose the poems for the sessions together, and encourage group members to read the poems aloud if they feel comfortable to do so.
Volunteer Duties:
· Promote the poetry group to residents.
· Choose poems for the group in collaboration with residents.
· Read the poems aloud to the group and lead the discussion afterwards, with a couple of discussion starter questions prepared.
· Be comfortable using IT equipment including searching website, navigating apps, printing, and connecting to speakers.
· Set up equipment for the session, and move tables and chairs if necessary.
· Prepare refreshments for the group.
· Display a friendly demeanour whilst respecting Creative Support policies on boundaries and Safeguarding.
· Report any concerns to Creative Support staff members
· Attend regular supervisions and undertake all training provided.
As a volunteer with Creative Support we offer training for your role, access to a volunteer supervisor, an induction, a monthly Volunteer newsletter, and an online volunteer’s peer support group. Together we can make a difference.

Now-u is a non-profit website and app, launched in July 2020 with a mission to inform, involve and inspire people to help tackle some of the world's most pressing environmental and social problems related to i) human rights and welfare, ii) protecting the world around us, and iii) preserving our species and the planet.
Through promotion we also engage with users of our app and website. By giving people actionable opportunities to help further the cause of our chosen campaigns (i.e. donating to certain charities, writing to your local MP, links to sign petitions), we work to create an engaging space whereby anyone can help contribute and tackle some of the challenges we face today.
The role
We are looking for a Researcher to join our Campaigns team. The role will involve researching a range of important social, economic, and environmental issues, and then writing up your findings in a way that’s informative yet engaging. Supporting both the Head of Campaigns and Campaign Manager, our Researchers are essential to the creation of all content within the now-u app.
What you will be doing
Our Campaigns span every issue imaginable – from LGBTQ+ rights to anti-racism, from saving our oceans to promoting sustainable transport, and from helping those in poverty to protecting refugees. As one of our Researchers, you will be charged with not only providing information on these global issues, but also connecting our users with charities across the UK so that they might help make a difference. This could entail finding volunteering opportunities, reliable donation points, or petitions that need signing – the possibilities are endless.
Once the research is done, you will need to curate your findings into what we call a ‘Campaign’ and produce copywriting that sets out the Campaign’s purpose in a way that will affect our users and inspire them to get involved – and then to return to the app again and again!
We also have a news section within the app, sharing articles on the most important issues. We are looking, therefore, for someone that keeps an eye on the various media platforms, knows what’s happening, and is able to be reactive to the latest stories for publishing.
Other responsibilities may include working with our partnerships and social media teams to ensure that our partner charities are being effectively supported and that key Campaigns are being shared across our channels.

What you will need
To be successful in the role as a Researcher, you will ideally have experience working in content – either as a writer or researcher – or working for a non-profit organisation. As a team made up entirely of volunteers, we are self-motivated and proactive about getting our work done with a shared passion for the app’s potential to have a real impact. You are creative with a flair for language, but simultaneously analytical and strategic about your approach to a task.
Our working hours are flexible, usually 3-5 hours a week, and the Campaigns team likes to get together once a fortnight to discuss what we’re working on and any upcoming priorities.
Volunteering with now-u is an opportunity to provide really important support to a new project that we hope could really make a positive difference in the world. You would also become part of a small friendly volunteer team who would love to work collaboratively.

What is the purpose of this role?
To support vulnerable people living in Nottingham City through the provision of practical and social support.
What impact does this role have?
Supports vulnerable people (18 and over), to live independently in the community.
What activities might you be involved in?
The following are examples of the type of support you could be asked to provide:
- Shopping
- Collecting prescriptions
- Wellbeing checks on the phone and in person according to the person’s needs
- Providing emotional support

What are we looking for?
Individuals with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of vulnerable people who are committed to volunteering within the charity’s policies and procedures and who will adhere to the volunteering code of conduct.
When would you be needed to volunteer?
Ideally, we ask all applicants to commit to providing a minimum of 2 hours volunteering a week at a time to meet your availability and our service requirements.
What training will you be given?
You will be given all the training you need to fulfil your role. Everyone will receive an induction into the Charity.

Community Focus Volunteer
Area: East Lancashire
Would you like to support an adult to be able to overcome the obstacles preventing them to live a better life. Our focus is to support people to understand the range of services available to them and to help people live happily and as independently as possible. Our community focus volunteer role provides opportunities to support individuals to overcome barriers relating to health & social care, social isolation, benefits, finances, housing, employment, and training. Our Community Focus Team aim to support people to live the life they want to live.

You could be part of a community focus advocacy team that offers:
· To create trusting relationships with adults who are having trouble in navigating and accessing services
· To ensure people are listened too and actively involved in the decisions that affect their lives
· To support people to attend meetings/appointments with (but not limited to) GP’s, hospital appointments, the Jobcentre/benefit office, colleges, and or housing organisations
· To accompany our qualified Independent Advocates to client visits and appointments
· To support to our ‘pop-up’ advocacy outreach provision and raise awareness of our service within the community and at our Community focus hub.
· To support people in need of services and make them aware of their rights to statutory advocacy
· To help
· To support people to make a complaint regarding a negative experience when using services
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for reliable, compassionate, caring, respectful and understanding people who are good communicators to join our volunteer team.
You do not need to be an advocacy expert; empathy matters more than academic qualifications or experience and we are keen to hear from people of all ages and walks of life.
All we ask is that you are keen and able to:
· Complete and submit the relevant paperwork and forms
· Keep up to date with relevant legislation
· Engage in quarterly supervisions and volunteer meetings with your volunteer manager
· Participate in necessary internal and external training
· Be computer literate and have access to emails and Microsoft Teams on a device
· Adhere to our volunteer policies and procedures
· Maintain strict confidentiality
· To commit to 3 or 4 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months
· Work as part of a team
· Travel using public transport or your own vehicle for which you should have a full UK driving licence
