Purpose of the post

Reporting to the Head of External Affairs, this is a pivotal role that is integral to demonstrating the value of health data research. You will work hand-in-hand with the Communications team and the HDR UK research community to tell the compelling story of data in health research and showcase the impact of HDR UK research programmes.

You will help deliver the institute’s communications strategy, working with colleagues to manage a range of tools and channels, including media relations, digital communications, social media, email, publications and events, to reach audiences across academia, NHS, industry, charities, as well as patients and the public.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced science communications professional to lead and deliver communications on cutting-edge research using health data and demonstrate the tangible difference it is making to people’s lives.

We are seeking an individual with a proven track record in research communications who has successfully worked on complex, scientific projects with multiple partners. The successful candidate will share our values, have strong influencing and collaboration skills and be comfortable with working at pace, moving quickly to prioritise resources where needed. Communications at Health Data Research UK

Communications and External Affairs is a key enabler in supporting HDR UK’s mission. Our aim is to unite our audiences in the benefit of transforming the secure use of the UK’s health data in research to improve people’s lives.

Main responsibilities for the role

• Implement HDR UK’s communication strategy with a specific focus on communicating scientific and research impact.
• Horizon scan for opportunities to share research impact that demonstrates the value of health data research and the role of HDR UK in this sector.
• Lead, motivate and line manage the Content and Communication Officer, supporting their development in their role.
• Build and maintain networks with researchers across the UK involved with HDR UK research programmes, working with them to identify stories and create accessible content for our target audiences.
• Establish effective relationships and work in partnership with communication, policy and programmme teams across the institute and partners.
• Working with Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement colleagues, ensure our work across communications is shaped by patients and the public as needed.
• Work with the Director of Communications and External Affairs, project manage a branding project for HDR UK with an external agency
• Develop and deliver a new Impact Report for the institute to be launched at a stakeholder event in January
• Manage media relations at HDR UK to gain maximum positive coverage for the institute, manage reputational risk and respond effectively to media interest.
• Research, write and create engaging scientific content in the form of news stories, press releases, features, case studies, videos and podcasts.
• Provide strategic communications support and advice for senior colleagues within Health Data Research UK
• Maintain media and communications contact lists in our media monitoring system and provide updates on the latest news and media coverage.
• Commission external suppliers to support delivery of Health Data Research UK’s science communications and manage these relationships.
• Ensure projects are delivered within set budgets.
• Ensure all communication materials produced for Health Data Research UK adhere to the brand guidelines, helping to ensure the reputation of Health Data Research UK and its partners are maintained.

Experience

• Experience of creating and delivering successful scientific communications strategies and plans

• Experience in media relations or journalism in health, science, environment or related areas.

About the role  

We are seeking a Head of Development and Partnerships to join our Senior Management Team alongside the CEO, Head of Programmes and Head of Finance and Operations. 

You will drive income generation and partnerships development with funders and prime contractors within primarily the UK public and international development sectors, ensuring that our programmes, courses and consultancy offerings meet market needs and are financially sustainable.

You will lead on activities generating over £1m annually through grants, tenders, contracts, partnerships, and strategic communications contributing to The Human Edge's financial growth and brand development. 

As the key member dedicated to income generation, you will shape and expand our funding streams, driving the growth of our services while serving as a charismatic external ambassador and effective communicator and influencer.

Responsibilities

Strategic development and implementation

• Develop and oversee an effective PR communications strategy, including business/trade press and public affairs (EU and UN advocacy), based on ProVeg’s strategic principles, impact areas and global interventions.

• Be accountable for the development, delivery, and evaluation of the organisation’s PR activities.

• Create relations with key media outlets to increase visibility and dissemination opportunities

• Develop media relations and build relationships with PR contacts to continuously grow our impact.

• Secure media opportunities for the Senior Leadership and Executive Team and the Global CEO.

• Oversee and ensure the management of positive relationships with the media and relevant change agents, and external colleagues.

• Develop and update, as needed, clear guidance (e.g., core messaging and brand narrative) for the communications team to ensure public communications are aligned with ProVeg’s organisational strategy and communications approach.

• Increase ProVeg International’s profile, particularly in broadcast media, enhance the organisation’s credibility and inspire supporters and other stakeholders through the use of engaging communications.

• Safeguard the organisation’s brand by overseeing and managing the development of crisis communications plans and advising on emerging issues and PR risks and opportunities. 

• Liaise with the Global CEO and the Senior Leadership Team on strategic communication alignment and/or adjustments, and coordinate and ensure synergies in terms of quality control, key messages, templates, strategies, etc. 

Management and leadership

• Model excellence in (remote) team management by motivating, coaching, giving, and receiving feedback, supporting and developing teams and skills, and driving innovation and creativity.

• Advise and work with colleagues across the organisation, to ensure we maximise opportunities to raise awareness, influence, and deepen engagement with our audiences in order to support a variety of objectives.

Budget and resource management and evaluation

• Manage a dedicated budget for effective reporting and forecasting.

• Produce timely and regular management information for leadership that effectively explains performance set against OKRs, KPIs and the broader strategic plan. 

Qualifications

Required:

• An excellent understanding of the plant-based and alternative protein sector and knowledge of food systems change.

• A successful track record (5+ years) in journalism (print or broadcast), marketing, or public affairs, developing and delivering strategic objectives across a range of communications channels.

• Strong track record in PR (including broadcast), marketing and/or organisational branding.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, English to native level (or C1).

• Excellent networking skills and experience in building productive relationships with key media stakeholders and influencers.

• Strong project management skills.

• Ability to juggle a varied workload, delegate effectively and contribute as a team player.

• Strong team management skills and a commitment to motivating and empowering a team remotely in order to achieve their goals.

• High level of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills – externally and internally; ability to balance diverse interests of different teams.

• A strong understanding of, and experience of using, quantitative and qualitative evidence.

Bristol Charities mission is to provide opportunities and support for people and communities to improve lives through grants, housing and charitable projects.

They are at a very exciting time in their development and have created a new role of Director of Fundraising & Communications to help them on their journey. This a new role that will play a crucial part in shaping the future of the charity as well as securing the resources to deliver sustainable growth in the work and impact of the charity.

Going forward their work will be delivered though a distinctive and coherent Community Hub model, which will be holistic, person-centred, integrated, joined-up, and promote a partnership approach.  They also purchased The Vassall Centre in 2021, with long term plans to redevelop the site for community benefit.

In the short term they plan to relaunch the Vassall Centre as a standout, accessible, and affordable workspace venue for charitable organisations.  Their community Hubs will include directly delivered Bristol Charities programmes/projects, services delivered by local partners, and services delivered by their strategic partners. They are also looking to increase the number of housing units they manage, either through development of their existing sites, through acquisition of new sites or through partnership working with other local housing providers, and any new Housing Schemes will incorporate the new Hub model.

Bristol Charities now need to recruit an experienced, passionate, and entrepreneurial fundraising professional; someone who is capable of not only overseeing a small but growing communications function, but who also recognises the importance of aligning fundraising and communications strategies and activity. 

With this role, there will be the opportunity to build a fundraising function from scratch and lead on the fundraising and communications strategy for the charity, at a time of exciting change. The work would go across a range of sectors and will provide an opportunity to impact the city in lasting and tangible ways.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Fundraising will play a key role in the Senior Leadership Team by providing thoughtful and creative leadership and productive working relationships with other Directors, teams, and colleagues, helping to set the direction for the charity and tackling strategic challenges.

Director of Housing and Communities

Bristol Based Charity Group

Salary c£70,000 per annum plus benefits

Our client is a Bristol based UK charity group, with the mission of improving lives through grants, housing, community projects and partnerships with other local charities and social enterprises. It has transformed and enhanced the lives of those in need in the Bristol area for over six hundred years. They currently manage three sheltered housing schemes and one extra care housing (ECH) scheme for older people and a range of semi-detached properties and they are looking to increase their housing units either through development or through partnership working with other local housing providers.

Following an extensive review of operations, they are about to embark on an exciting and ambitious 5-year strategy that will focus their work on place-based community transformation. The Director of Housing and Communities is a new position in their structure and will be pivotal in the drive to put housing front and centre of their operations and the development and implementation of their ambitious plans. This will be a unique career opportunity to oversee a unified directorate of Housing and Communities, providing a strategic lead on all Housing matters as well as providing leadership to the combined operations.

Reporting into The Chief Executive, the Director of Housing and Communities will:-

· develop and deliver the Charities’ 5-year Housing strategy, including identifying and building new housing schemes as part of a hub strategy.

· lead and develop the Charities’ integrated approach to community development, establishing and embedding community hubs across the existing asset base, including housing schemes.

· lead robust, high-quality, person-centred housing management and support for all residents in line with regulations.

The new Director of Housing and Communities will be an experienced housing professional with extensive knowledge of housing legislation, regulation, and housing finance delivered in a customer focused environment. Residents will always be their ‘community of first priority’ and the new Director will also promote exciting and innovative community building and resident wellbeing activities within our schemes.

You will ideally have experience of working with older people and will have been involved in the development of supported housing.

The Role

Reporting to a Community Engagement Manager, the Flood Engagement Officer will work with colleagues across the area to deliver against engagement activity.

The National Flood Forum (NFF) is the only independent national charity dedicated to supporting and representing people at risk of flooding. Established in 2002 by those affected by flooding, we passionately put people at the heart of flood risk management. We’re looking for BMS Regional Speakers (five positions) to nurture and strengthen relationships with churches and gain new regular supporters so we can see more communities transformed in Jesus’ name. You should be an enthusiastic advocate for mission, an excellent public speaker and confident in making a financial ask for BMS. You need to be outcome-driven and work towards agreed targets in the number of successful speaking engagements and new regular givers. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, have a strong commitment to outstanding supporter care, have excellent organisational skills, and be proactive and computer literate. You will have a global vision, a heart for mission and be passionate about the role of the UK church in a growing world church. This is a rewarding and very active role. 

You will conduct 15 speaking engagements to allocated churches in your region. 12 out of the 15 engagements need to take place during the main service, most likely on a Sunday morning. Other engagements can happen on a Saturday or mid-week event. If required and individually agreed, instead of two of the 15 speaking engagements at a church, the role holder might represent BMS at a ministers’ conference or a Christian event. Preparation, training, travel and speaking time are compensated and mileage is reimbursed. 

The time required for this role adds up to about 12 hours per month / 140 hours per year. This is made up of 15 speaking engagements, including the time for travel, arriving early and staying for tea and biscuits (5h per speaking engagement), preparation time (0.5h per engagement), keeping up to date with BMS’ development with our regular publications (about 15h per year), organising speaking engagements, including all communications with the church from the offer of a visit to follow up communications after a visit, recording all communications and raising any changes to role holders (2h per engagement), attending training (online and in person), team and coaching meetings (about 15h per year). 

Please note that BMS deems this role to be inside IR35 and, due to the nature of the role, will contract successful candidates via an Umbrella Agency for pay and tax purposes. You would log your hours on an hours sheet which you would submit quarterly.

The successful applicant will be a committed Christian. The nature of this role means that this is a specific occupational requirement.
