Who we are

Nhaka Foundation was established in 2007 as a means to provide support to many children who were living in difficult circumstances in Zimbabwe. We feel everyone has a role to play in reaching out to the littlest and most vulnerable members of society. In so doing we should demonstrate a servant attitude and impact our communities by being the change we wish to see in the world. Zimbabwe is one of the countries most harshly affected by the AIDS pandemic. Children bear the brunt of the crisis – as adult family members become ill and die, their children lose parental nurture, food, education, health care, home and safety. Nearly 1 million of the estimated 13 million population of Zimbabwe are orphans; this is a greater proportion than any other country in the world. Seventy-eight percent of orphaned children are a result of parents dying from AIDS. Nhaka Foundation channels support to preschools utilizing early learning centers/preschools as an entry point. We focus particularly on the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. Our goal is to ensure that all children within the program enjoy their right to a protective and nurturing environment within which their normal psychological, social and physical development can be assured. Our strategy is to meet with local leadership and key stakeholders in each target ward followed by an awareness-raising and mobilization exercise with each community to secure support. Potential sites for ECD centers are identified at primary schools within the target ward in consultation with local leadership and Ministry of Education officials, centers are renovated and equipped. Teachers are selected and trained. Management committees are elected by the community and receive training.
