Mountain Rescue England and Wales

Who we are

Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW) is an important national charity representing and supporting the work of our highly respected Mountain Rescue teams. MREW is registered a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and is embarking on a new and exciting phase of organisational development.

MREW works to develop good practices in mountain rescue and national training standards, provides training and insurance cover for our members, and enables coordination between the teams during major incidents.  

MREW represents the interests of mountain rescue at a national level on emergency response coordinating groups in UK Search and Rescue (UKSAR), alongside the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Fire and Ambulance Services, and other voluntary groups such as the Scottish and Irish mountain rescue organisations,  British Cave Rescue Council (BCRC) and Royal National Life Boat Institution (RNLI). This vital role helps to ensure that this essential volunteer rescue service is able to meet the demands not just in our traditional mountain environment but in the broader emergency response role that we are often now asked to fulfil.

The members of MREW are the mountain rescue teams in England & Wales, working within regions. There are a number of other members, including cave rescue teams and mountain rescue search dog handlers in England and in Wales.

All team members are volunteers, using well-developed, professional skills.
