About us

Who we are

The Association for Science Education is a not for profit professional association that supports a global community of science educators.  We provide a range of professional development activities, publish journals and books, run events including large annual and regional conference and provide a valuable community of professional support to teachers, technicians, teacher trainees and teacher educators.

Our culture and values

Our values define our culture and reflect our priorities in the way we work.   We are:

  • Welcoming:  we celebrate diversity and foster an inclusive environment in which everyone in our science education community is respected, valued and heard
  • Evidence informed: we value good research, data analysis, evaluation feedback and expert opinion and use it to shape our activities
  • Passionate about science and teaching: We inspire educators to continually evolve and grow in their understanding and teaching of science, nurturing a culture of life-long learning and innovation
  • Bold: We aim to push boundaries, embrace innovation in science education and set ourselves ambitious objectives in pursuit of our goals
  • Environmentally sustainable: we are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint by minimising waste, conserving resources, and adopting sustainable practices.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Our full EDI policy can be found on our website under About us.

In summary, the ASE commits to:

  • Embed equality, diversity and inclusion across our policies, systems, processes and activities (both internal and external)
  • Encourage and promote equity and equality, to value diversity and create an inclusive and welcoming workplace environment that is free of bullying, harassment, victimisation and unlawful discrimination, promoting dignity and respect for all, and where individual differences and the contributions of all staff are recognised and valued.
  • Take seriously complaints of bullying, harassment, victimisation and discrimination by fellow employees, members and any others in the course of the organisation’s work activities and highlight the channels that people can use to raise concerns.
  • Make regular opportunities for equality, diversity and inclusion information and training available to all staff and representatives of the Association (for example committee members and conference speakers),
  • Review employment practices and procedures where necessary to ensure fairness, and to update the policy to take account of changes in the law or to improve practice.
  • Monitor the make-up of our workforce and membership regarding information such as age, gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, religion or belief, and disability in encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion, and in meeting the aims and commitments set out in the equality, diversity and inclusion policy. All members will be encouraged to complete a diversity survey when joining and at at renewal.
  • Monitor diversity and inclusion across our areas of activity, using tools such as the Science Council Diversity & Inclusion benchmarking framework
