About us
Who we are
Xenia brings together migrant, refugee, British and asylum seeking women of all ages and language abilities to connect, share and learn as equals. Since 2016 our work in Sheffield and London has enabled hundreds of women to connect across their differences, to improve their English and engage in their local community. Our work is fundamental in challenging perceptions of “otherness”, increasing the participation of newcomers in their local areas, improving language skills and building up confidence and capacity in the women we work with. In an age where many people experience a sense of disconnection, we create a space where people can rediscover what it means to belong. We engage with the arts/heritage sector to increase women's access to education, enable civic engagement, bridge prejudices and ensure equitable access to services.
Participants are at the heart of the Xenia community. Migrant, refugee, asylum seeking and British women come together as active equals at our workshops to connect, share and learn. Together we create a community that supports practising spoken English, reduces social isolation, connects different cultures, and gives underrepresented women access to civic and democratic opportunities to make their voices heard.
