About us
Who we are
Winchester Radio is an award-winning, volunteer-led, community-driven, Winchester-based charity and Ofcom-regulated community radio broadcaster that uses broadcasting as a medium to promote health, wellbeing and positive ageing to the rapidly-growing older generation in and around Winchester. We also provide the hospital radio service at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.
Winchester Radio currently broadcasts to the city of Winchester and the immediately-surrounding villages on 94.7FM, covering an adult population of around 56,000, of which around 22,000 are our primary target audience - those aged 50 and over. We intend to broadcast on the Winchester Small-Scale DAB digital radio service when it launches later in 2022. We aim to provide truly local radio, for Winchester, from Winchester, by Winchester. All our on-air volunteers live/work in and around Winchester, and talk knowledgeably and with authority about the city.
We embrace the World Health Organisation's social determinants of health (the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes), encouraging positive ageing through the promotion of active lifestyles, engaged with what is going on in the local community (arts, culture, sport, environment and local politics). We signpost listeners to support services, encouraging them to seek appropriate health and care when and where needed. For those unable to live such an active life, we aim to reduce social isolation by bringing the community to them, through our local news and coverage of local events.
