About us
Who we are
Walworth Golden Oldies is a small independent volunteer led charity which provides friendship, free information and support to people over the age of 60, in Southwark, particularly those of the Windrush generation or with overseas origins. Established in 1991, we are managed by a team of dedicated trustees and volunteers. The charity provides:
Our services include:
· Telephone befriending to house-bound elders
· Once weekly Day Centre Support
· Warm weekly Caribbean lunch and hot refreshments
· Arts Projects (storytelling, writing, performance)
· Learning Activities (Chair based exercises, massage, Digital skills)
· Trips and outings to seaside and places of interest
According to Southwark’s population statistics (Older People’s JSI) some 25,000 people aged 65 or over live in Southwark, making up 10% of the local population. It’s projected that by 2025 an additional 5,000 more residents aged 65 will be living locally. Assessments show that nearly 20% of older people living in Southwark are of overseas origins - the second largest group being Black/Black British (13%). These also indicate that in the future there will be increasing numbers of and an increasing proportion of older people from BAME groups.
This means that in future there is likely to be an increase in the demand for our services for which its important that we continue to increase our efforts to develop and grow the vitally important services we provide through Golden Oldies.
