Who we are
Walk the Plank is one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts specialists with nearly 30 years’ experience working with artists and communities to create amazing work in the public realm. From festivals to immersive installations, parades to podcasts, Walk the Plank’s portfolio is diverse, spectacular and award-winning. Current projects include Grimsby’s first Taste of the Sea festival, Manchester Day 2021, work with the National Trust for Seaton Delaval Hall, and Golau Gaeaf/ WinterLight, North Wales, and Digital Diwali for Greater Manchester. The company is undertaking R&D for Festival 2022, and for a new installation, BODY; and leading a European training project, the School of Participation, to build the capacity of creative practitioners in eleven EU Capital of Culture cities. National and international work sits alongside ongoing projects in Salford: working with schools, colleges and the Salford Culture and Place partnership to animate the city’s parks, waterways and green spaces.
Previous highlights include collaboration with Mind the Gap to stage the world premiere of the first large scale outdoor performance with a learning disabled cast (ZARA at the Piece Hall, Halifax, 2019) and work with Punchdrunk to create special effects for the livestream broadcast of The Third Day, for Sky HBO (2020); the Closing Ceremony to the XVIIth Commonwealth Games, Manchester; the Opening of three European Capitals of Culture: Liverpool ’08, Turku 2011 (Finland) and Pafos 2017 (Cyprus); partnerships with Blue Dot, Kendal Calling and Lost Village Festivals; the tenth anniversary of the Wales Millennium Centre, and Manchester’s Diwali Mela. Other work includes processions and parades, diverse cultural celebrations, and firework displays nationwide.
