About us
Who we are
Vocabulous is an innovative resource to aid targeted and explicit vocabulary teaching in Key Stages 2 and 3 English lessons.
Vocabulous uses Latin and Greek root words to teach word patterns. Students then use these patterns to work out the meaning of unknown words which share the same root. For example, the root “scrip-” meaning “write” can help students understand “inscription”, “manuscript” and “prescription”.
We work with teachers to enhance their vocabulary teaching, and support them to implement Vocabulous in the classroom.
We are a small company with a social purpose, working to improve literacy and education outcomes for students across the country and particularly in the North of England, in partnership with The SHINE Trust.
Our culture and values
Vocabulous is founded by a teacher for teachers, with the overall aim of improving student outcomes in literacy. We know that Latin and Ancient Greek roots are foundational in the English language, and we believe that they are useful for all students, regardless of background or academic ability. We work to empower teachers to confidently teach Latin and Ancient Greek roots, to illuminate patterns in English words and give their students the skills they need to be able to work out unfamiliar words and expand their own vocabularies.
We work flexibly and remotely, and are united in our common goal of helping students succeed. There is some infrequent travel to visit schools, and seeing Vocabulous in action is always and exciting part of the job.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
Vocabulous is committed to ensuring that there is fairness in the recruitment of staff members and in the work that we do. Equality, diversity and inclusion are important to us and we make sure that everyone who works with us feels respected and valued. Coming from an education background, just as we want all students to succeed in school regardless of who they are, we want our employees to succeed in just the same way.
