About us

Who we are

Vital Xposure is a disabled-led touring theatre company that promotes hidden voices with extraordinary stories to tell.

The company was founded by disabled artist and activist Julie McNamara, who led the company’s creative work and artistic vision for its first decade.

Our Vision

A future where marginalised people are recognised, celebrated and empowered as leaders, audiences, participants and artists.

Our Mission

  • We champion unheard stories to broad audiences.
  • We challenge preconceptions of disabled-led performance.
  • We pioneer collaborative research to expand the future of disabled-led work.
  • We develop new disabled artists, validating their complex individual identities.
  • We demand access for artists, audiences and participants.

Our Values

  • Excellence: We are a professional theatre company which makes exceptional work and develop remarkable people.
  • Social Justice: We promote equity for all and challenge the injustice of systemic barriers and personal prejudices which exclude disabled people.
  • Access: We strive for our work and processes to be accessible. We are committed to ongoing investment in access, exploring new options and evolving our own understanding.
  • Innovation: We tell stories in new, ambitious ways. We celebrate disabled perspectives. We establish academic partnerships to dismantle regressive structures.
  • Appreciating Complexity: We do not live single issue lives. Disabled people are not single labels. Too many have been left behind by reductive thinking.

Vital Xposure was founded in 2011 by disabled artist and activist Julie McNamara, who led the company’s creative work and artistic vision for its first decade. In 2012 the company became an Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisation (NPO). We are grateful for the public investment we have received and we continue to be an NPO for the funding period 2023 – 2026. We are also thankful to many Trusts and Foundations and Partners for their ongoing support to our work.

We are a registered Charity (No 1161464) and a Company Limited by Guarantee registered in England and Wales (No 07488858).

We are a member of the Independent Theatre Council (ITC) and of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).
