Comments made by the Residents of Waterhouse and Mackintosh Homes.
The United Charities of Nathaniel Waterhouse and John Mackintosh Memorial Homes support a warm and friendly community of Residents living in a mixture of forty Almshouse flats and cottages built over two sites in Halifax.
Waterhouse Homes consists of twenty four flats with a large communal lounge which has been used for afternoon teas, lunches and other external activities such as Tai Chi and the Winter Choir. The Wardens' House is situated behind the Community Lounge on this site. Mackintosh Homes consists of eight original cottages and eight flats. Both Waterhouse and Mackintosh upper flats are served, in parts, by (passenger only) lifts. Mackintosh Homes have far reaching views towards Wainhouse Tower and the moors whilst both Waterhouse and Mackintosh Homes have extensive and colourful gardens, full of wildlife, all of which can be viewed on the Charities' website.
The Board consists of eleven Trustees who are an active part of the Waterhouse and Mackintosh community. The Board is supported by the experienced Clerk and two Wardens, who, after twenty seven years of compassionate service supporting the Residents, will retire at the start of 2021. The Wardens describe their role as feeling part of a 'big family' which sums up perfectly the ethos and feeling of the Homes.
The Charities not only maintain the Almshouses but also other support other local charities within the geographical area of Calderdale with grants and give educational grants to Halifax Minster.
