About us
Who we are
The Society of Authors is the UK trade union for writers, illustrators, scriptwriters and literary translators. We've been advising individuals and speaking out for the profession since 1884.
With almost 11,000 members and 25 staff, the SoA provides unlimited advice on all aspects of the profession, including the confidential vetting of publishing agreements, publications and a wide range of member benefits.
We empower authors through our campaigning work, professional training, events, conferences, regional and special interest groups and community networks. We manage around 15 charities which provide prizes and grants to writers, and we manage over 50 literary estates.
It's an organisation where you can grow and develop and is also a great place to work. Our working culture is collaborative, friendly and supportive.
What's more, we’ve recently moved into our bright, modern offices located in the heart of vibrant Bloomsbury.
We offer our staff attractive benefits, including:
- Generous annual leave
- Generous employer contributions to a stakeholder pension plan
- Life insurance
- Private healthcare options
- Annual travel card loan
- Smart working practices
- Development opportunities
Join us to make a positive difference for all types of writers, illustrators and literary translators.
