About us

Who we are

Founded in 1920 by an American opera singer, The Not Forgotten has a rich and fascinating 105-year history supporting its beneficiaries in the aftermath of two world wars and countless other conflicts.

Our Founder wrote in 1937 “… as long as there are sufferers so long will The Not Forgotten be needed and we are. The charity has gone from strength to strength throughout the decades, continuing to adapt to meet the changing needs of serving personnel and veterans living with injury and illness - embracing changes in society and digital technology and the increasing understanding of mental and moral injury.

Despite the loss of our records in an air raid in 1941, we can be confident that around one million men and women have benefitted from our activities since 1920 - quite a legacy on which we continue to build and invest.

Our Aims

To support every eligible beneficiary who approaches us, irrespective of service, age, rank or injury/illness.

Continue to support individuals whose needs are ongoing.

To work with the beneficiary to complement their individual recovery pathway.

To work with other Service Charities to meet the needs of our mutual beneficiaries.

Our culture and values

The Not Forgotten transforms the lives of injured, ill and isolated veterans and serving personnel and their families by bringing people together, restoring confidence, and fostering camaraderie and support.

Our values of empathy, excellence, comradeship and teamwork run through everything we do. We provide a caring and genuinely personal service, our small team getting to know our beneficiaries personally, developing real relationships and listening to their needs and worries and sharing the ups and downs of their lives. We work with every individual to help them with their own route to recovery and know that many need to attend multiple events on that journey.

We collaborate closely with other military charities and organisations, aiming to be the trusted partner of choice in providing entertainment and recreation opportunities for veterans and injured serving personnel. We strive to be at the forefront of the military charity sector remaining current and relevant whilst retaining the character that makes us special.

Our Objective

To act generally for the benefit of service and ex-service personnel with disabilities or who are wounded, including the organisation or provision of items or facilities for leisure and recreational activities, travel, holidays and outings.

Our Vision

To be the trusted partner of choice for providing entertainment and recreation opportunities for both beneficiaries and other service charities. To position ourselves to help more individuals who we are not yet reaching. To meet the high demand for activities and events, well supported by volunteers and with a strong financial base.

Our Values

Excellence

We seek to achieve this in everything we do.

Personal

Our beneficiaries are at the heart of everything we do; we know them and they know us.
