About us
Who we are
Educate. Empower. Bring Change to Huaycán.
The Light and Leadership Initiative's mission is to respond to the needs of the women and youth in Huaycán, a growing community of 200,000 people outside Lima, Perú, in their struggle out of poverty by improving the availability of quality education. We are first and foremost an ethically-based volunteer program, with volunteers supporting participants in achieving their goals. Through workshops and classes, youth aged 7-17 learn the value of education and respect for their community. Women are empowered to better care for themselves and their families through a 3-month finance program that teaches smart money management and entrepreneurial skills. We believe the women and youth of Huaycán will become positive leaders for change through love, support, and education. Our educational programs are offered in the areas of literacy, the English language, math, art, community leadership and much more!
Our volunteer program is grounded in an ethical volunteering philosophy where we continue to critically examine what development and service mean in the context of our programs and ensure that our participants are the foremost receivers of any “benefit,” challenging narratives that put international volunteers at the center. This is done through monthly community reflections, a strict social media policy, as well as community forums and feedback. Volunteers have the opportunity to work alongside program participants, learn about Peruvian culture, and establish lifelong friendships. Volunteers play an essential role in our organization. Looking to make a difference? We can help you help Huaycán!
We are registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Tinley Park, Illinois. We began program operations in June of 2009.
