About us
Who we are
The Friends of the Wisdom Support are dedicated to supporting The Wisdom Hospice in Rochester. We are the only adult hospice covering the area of Medway and Swale with a combined population of over 400,000 residents.
The hospice was built with public money following a successful fundraising campaign spearheaded by our founder Molly Wisdom. She began the fundraising that resulted in the hospice being opened by the Queen in 1984.
Today the hospice’s 15 bedded in patient unit is supported by a team of Community Nurses who support up to 400 patients to live in their own homes in addtion a DayTherapy Centre, Counselling and Bereavement Services, Welfare Advice. All the services of the hospice are free to all that use them. Currently The Friends make an annual grant towards the running costs of the hospice of £670,000.
In additioon to thier regular grants, when funds allow, The Friends provide the hospice with extra facilities and equipment that fall outside the NHS budget. We do this by organsing a range of fundraising events throughout the year as well as supporting our donors and supporters who raise money from their own challenges and events and a weekly lottery. The Friends also operate charity shops through our trading sunbsidary Wisdom Hospice Support. We sell a range of quality donated goods to raise much needeed funds to support the hospice.
