About us
Who we are
The Friendly Almshouses was founded in 1802 with the same charitable purpose as today - to “relieve and assist women of good character over the age of 50 who are in need, in particular by the provision of social housing in the form of almshouse accommodation and facilities for such women on terms appropriate to their needs.”
We’ve had a presence on Stockwell Park Road since 1863, when seven cottages providing accommodation for women were opened. We currently support twenty residents from a rich diversity of backgrounds and cultures to live independently in a safe, supported, community-inspired environment at our almshouses.
With royal patronage secured from its earliest beginnings, TFA is extremely proud of its origins and history. The board of volunteer trustees and small support team work closely together, always enthusiastic to embrace change and challenges in equal measure. Everything the Charity does is based on its belief that residents should enjoy independence whilst living in comfortable, affordable and safe accommodation.
Our culture and values
To treat staff and residents with respect, always acting with integrity, compassion, discretion and inclusivity.
To work as a team delivering the Charity’s objectives. To uphold Almshouse values, ethos and traditions.
To instil confidence, self esteem and encouragement. To support our residents, helping them thrive and live full, independent lives.
To embrace change and challenges with positivity, always mindful of sustainability, the environment and the vibrant multicultural community in which we live.
