About us
Who we are
Established over 30 years ago, The Farm Animal Sanctuary was the first of its kind in this country.
We provide a safe haven for neglected and abused farm animals where they can live out the rest of their lives in comfort while receiving the special care and attention they need.
The sanctuary was founded by Jan Taylor, after she witnessed the horrific reality of livestock markets around the country selling sick, malnourished, and frightened animals that were facing certain death or a lifetime of misery.
Today we have over 600 happy residents, including sheep, cattle, pigs, ponies and horses, cats, dogs, ducks, geese, hens and cockerels, turkeys and alpacas!
Our culture and values
Jan’s rescue story that formed the starting point of the sanctuary, gained both local and national press interest.
Not just because of the feel good factor of her battle to save neglected animals but because it posed a serious question about animal welfare in livestock markets and the laws that were meant to protect them.
The woeful standards could simply not be ignored. Meetings were held with veterinary officers from the State Veterinary Service, private vets, market managers, Trading Standard Officers and representatives from the farming world.
All of them agreed that the evidence presented to them was unacceptable and that improvements were to be made.
To this day, we campaign against animal cruelty with the aim to change both legal and individual perceptions on animal rights.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
The Farm Animal Sanctuary is committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion among our workforce, and eliminating unlawful discrimination.
The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative of all sections of society and our customers, and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.
The organisation – in providing goods and/or services and/or facilities – is also committed against unlawful discrimination of customers or the public.
