About us
Who we are
The Fan Museum is the only Museum in the UK devoted to all aspects of the ancient art and craft of the fan. From exquisitely crafted eighteen century European folding fans to works by venerated artists including Dali, Gauguin and Sickert, the Museum’s collection of over 5,000 fans and fan leaves is presented in permanent displays and changing themed exhibitions.
Our primary purpose is to promote awareness and appreciation of fans, their history and the craft of fan making. We do this mainly by collecting, conserving, documenting, studying, exhibiting and making fans. We use our extraordinary collections, specialist knowledge and heritage buildings to enlighten, entertain and inspire people.
We welcome approximetely 12,500 thousand visitors a year and this is growing, our amazing volunteers help us to welcome and encourage visitors from all over the world and are paramount to the running of the Museum.
