About us
Who we are
The Family Centre (Deaf Children) (FCDC) was set up in 1995 to create a sense of community among deaf families to offer support and reduce isolation. Families affected by deafness may feel a sense of isolation while they are dealing with different daily challenges than other families and their friends. Families will have to adapt their lives to the new conditions, manage the day to day as well as the additional appointments and investigations that deafness brings. The specific difficulties of having a deaf child can have an enormous impact on family life, on communication within the family, and on family relationships. Where families do not adapt to accommodate their deaf child, the child is at risk of being cut off; and all members of the family are at risk of mental ill-health.
The Family Centre delivers a package of projects, mainly providing support, advice, and a sense of community to deaf families in Bristol and the surrounding area.
