About us
Who we are
The British Deer Society (BDS) is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to the welfare, conservation, and sustainable management of wild deer. Established to promote knowledge and best practices, we work to ensure that all six deer species in Britain thrive in balance with their environment.
Through education, training, and research, BDS supports responsible deer management and ethical stalking practices. We offer a range of courses, from beginner to professional level, helping individuals develop essential skills in deer ecology, identification, and humane culling. Our nationally recognised qualifications ensure high standards in deer welfare and conservation.
BDS plays a key role in scientific research, conducting nationwide surveys and collaborating with conservation bodies, land managers, and government agencies. Our data helps shape policies and management strategies that protect both deer and their habitats.
We actively engage with the public to raise awareness about deer and their impact on the landscape. Our outreach includes publications, events, and an interactive digital journal, providing valuable information on deer behaviour, biodiversity, and sustainable management.
Our culture and values
The British Deer Society (BDS) is guided by a set of core values that shape its mission and work in deer conservation, education, and management. While the specific wording may not always be explicitly stated, the following principles reflect the Society’s approach:
Core Values of the BDS:
-
Deer Welfare – Ensuring the highest standards of care, ethical management, and conservation for all wild deer species in the UK.
-
Scientific Integrity – Promoting evidence-based research, data collection, and best practices to inform policy and management.
-
Education & Awareness – Providing high-quality training, courses, and resources to improve public and professional understanding of deer.
- Sustainability – Advocating responsible and sustainable deer management that balances ecological, economic, and social considerations.
- Collaboration & Community – Working with government agencies, landowners, conservationists, and the public to enhance deer conservation efforts.
- Ethical & Responsible Management – Supporting humane and ethical practices in deer stalking, culling, and land management.
- Public Engagement & Advocacy – Representing the interests of deer and promoting understanding among policymakers and the general public.
These values underpin the Together for Deer Strategy (2024-2030) and guide the BDS in its efforts to balance conservation with responsible management practices.
