About us
Who we are
The Birkbeck and William Ellis Schools Trust is a charity that supports inspiring activities, pastoral support and social and cultural connections for boys at William Ellis School and for girls at LaSWAP Sixth Form who are based at William Ellis School in the London Borough of Camden (William Ellis is part of a consortium with three other local schools for post 16 education).
Our mission is to help William Ellis School become a recognised leader in comprehensive education, by supporting initiatives that foster confidence and cohesion, personal growth and wellbeing, positive masculinity, social capital, and ultimately a sense of belonging among pupils, focusing particularly on students from under-resourced backgrounds. In doing so, we aim to complement and enhance William Ellis School’s and LaSWAP’s own plans for students and to tackle inequality within the school and sixth form.
William Ellis, the school’s founder, believed strongly in a broad academic education for all, allied to character development. That ethos is still strong in the school today and leaders seek to nurture successful students and good citizens through strong relationships. The school does this by developing in its students the knowledge, skills and qualities – and strengthening their character and resolve – so that they are well prepared for future success, healthy relationships and wellbeing. The school’s five-year ambition states its intention to: become a leader in state comprehensive education for boys; be part of a powerful consortium of Camden schools with London’s best state sixth form offer; draw advantage from diversity to deliver better educational and social outcomes; offer superior pastoral care; and deliver progress for all, leaving no child behind.
The purpose of the Trust in the next decade will be to reinforce this work by thoughtful investment of the resources we already have and by raising more money to support and enhance the work of the governors and staff. Aspirations for the Trust’s activities include initiatives to develop relationships for students in and with the wider community; networking and mentoring initiatives with local organisations and role models; and work experience opportunities that will expand our students’ horizons.
