About us
Who we are
The BDD Foundation is a small but growing charity and our aim is to increase awareness & understanding of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). BDD is a mental health disorder that consists of a disabling preoccupation with perceived defects or flaws in appearance, which makes sufferers excessively self-conscious. They commonly avoid public or social situations. Onlookers are often perplexed because they can see nothing out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, BDD causes devastating distress and interferes substantially with the ability to function in life. It affects about 1-2% of the population (men and women equally) and causes many unnecessary cosmetic treatments as well as a high rate of suicide and 1 and 50 attempting suicide.
The BDD Foundation undertakes a range of activities including conferences with leading experts in the field, facilitation and setting up of support groups, awareness and fundraising initiatives, education, strong media relations and presence and maintenance of an up to date informative website.
