About us

Who we are

Abbeyfield: where communities thrive

Established in 1956, we have a rich history of providing exceptional housing and care services for older people. Inspired by the vision of our founder, Richard Carr-Gomm, we've always believed in fostering a sense of belonging and independence within vibrant communities.

That's why Abbeyfield offers a range of retirement housing and care options to well in later life. We want you to find the perfect fit,  whether you crave friendly faces for social activities or simply appreciate the security of a warm and supportive environment.  At Abbeyfield, companionship is at the core of everything we do. It's what makes our communities special and allows our residents to thrive while retaining their independence.

The Abbeyfield movement in England and Wales is strong, with almost 100 independent Abbeyfield Member Societies serving communities nationwide. This means there's likely to be an Abbeyfield close by, ready to offer the exceptional housing and care services and warm atmosphere we're known for.  Explore homes in your area today and see if Abbeyfield could be the perfect fit for you or your loved one?

Our culture and values

Community is at the heart of our vision and mission

Abbeyfield is built on a strong charitable foundation. The majority of our local societies operate as charities, with fundraising projects, and dedicated volunteers working alongside our professional staff to make it all happen.

Our vision

Our vision is to be recognised as one of the most effective national charities working to enhance the quality of life for older people by creating communities that keep people connected; such that older people are never lonely and live within a vibrant and welcoming community that enhances the quality of their lives.

Abbeyfield England, through the provision of its membership services and strategic direction, will empower member societies in their delivery of that vision, whilst also celebrating the independence and localism of Abbeyfield.

We are ambitious for our member societies, and we want to become a leading advocate on the national platform for our membership, their residents, and communities. We will build on the strong local profiles and focus on growing our membership and Abbeyfield Family’s impact across the housing and care sector.

Our mission

Our mission is to empower Member Societies to support older adults to live well, through the provision of good-quality affordable homes that enable residents to live independent but well supported lives by:

  • Delivering caring and compassionate services
  • Listening and responding to residents, family, and friends
  • Providing responsive support and assistance as and when required
  • Being connected to local communities
  • Meeting changing circumstances and future needs of residents.
