AN OVERVIEW OF SURREY WILDLIFE TRUST

Below is some information about the Trust.  But the main thing you need to know is that it is the most amazing place to work!  Surrounded by Nature and people who live and breathe the wonder of nature, it is inspiring, motivating, fun and productive.  We are professional but make working enjoyable.  Honestly, join us and find out.

Surrey Wildlife Trust’s mission is to advance, for the benefit of the people of Surrey: Environmental protection, improvement and accessibility of wildlife, its habitats and places of natural beauty; Education in the study of nature and the principles and practice of biodiversity; and Science and natural heritage and research in all branches of nature study. The Trust is a registered charity (No: 208123), and is one of 47 County and urban wildlife Trusts which together make up the National Partnership of the Wildlife Trusts.

Guided by a collaborative vision where we all play a part in connecting nature, we provide expert advice and guidance to landowners and managers, making sure the land we look after leads by example, while inspiring and educating people and organisations across the county on what they can do. By doing this we will create a Surrey that is full of diverse and abundant wildlife, where nature is at the heart of individual choices, corporate decisions, and local economic and policy making. One that helps tackle the ongoing climate emergency, while supporting the health and wellbeing of all who live here.

The Trust employs nearly 100 professional staff, supported by over 350 regular volunteers and a growing number of members. We are the only organisation in the County concerned with all forms of wildlife and all aspects of nature conservation. The Trust’s headquarters are based in a converted Victorian school in Pirbright near Woking. As a Charity, the Trust is governed by a committee of Trustees (the Council) who set strategy and overall policy.

Day-to-day decision making is devolved to the Chief Executive and the Directors. We are involved in strategic planning and carry out planning reviews, consultancy and wildlife survey work. We are a key partner in Surrey’s Biodiversity Action Plan and undertake many conservation projects which are part of Habitat or Species Action Plans. SWT also hosts the Surrey Biodiversity Information Centre which holds over 450,000 biological records and is responsible for gathering, managing and disseminating information on habitats and species for the whole County.

The Trust is financially dependent on membership subscriptions, grants and our own fundraising efforts. Currently we have over 30,000 members. Surrey Wildlife Trust School Lane, Pirbright, Woking, Surrey GU24 0JN. Tel: 01483 795440 Visit our website:
