About us

Who we are

Established in 1995, St. Helens Mind helps local people achieve, and maintain, good mental health.  We are a small but passionate charity, delivering more than 970 community group sessions per year, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who give more than 1700 hours of their precious time.  People are supported to achieve their full potential, and play an active part in community life through our long-running Wellbeing Groups, Choir, Music group, our allotment - A Place to Grow - and Befriending Service.

We work strategically at local and regional level promoting wellbeing, mental health services and suicide prevention. This includes National Mind Federation working, Regional local Mind joint working, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board (ICB) Stakeholder Board Membership. Working collaboratively with the Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust Recovery Team we deliver the Befriending Service, funded and monitored by St Helens Borough Council.  As a member of St Helens Suicide Prevention Community of Practice, we contributed to St Helens’ Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023-2027, building on a programme of work delivered by local partners to reduce suicide.

We regularly work in partnership with a number of other charities in St Helens.  For example, each month, alongside our good friends and partners at the Lucem Community Cinema, we bring together like-minded people to see a film and enjoy socialising together over cake and a cuppa.  In the summer, we worked with Saints Community Development Foundation to raise thousands of pounds which was shared between the two organisations through a joint sponsored walk, with numerous service users and supporters of both organisations taking part and attending a great rugby match together at the Warrington ground afterwards.

Everything we do is focussed on helping people to achieve, and maintain, good mental health, with activities and services based in the community, run by the community, for the community.  The need for mental health support locally increases year on year and we are determined to expand what we do to meet that need.
