About us
Who we are
SSAFA was set up in 1885 to support the families of soldies and sailors left behind when the 2nd Expeditionary Force set off for Egypt. There was, of course, no welfare state or pension provision and the families often faced starvation or the workhouse. SSAFA's help has changed over the years to meet the current needs of the military family. In WW1 SSAFA volunteers paid widows pensions and grants for food and basic support until the Government scheme came into force n 1915. In WW2 the charity ran childrens' homes and provided links between the fighting forces and evacuated families. What ever the need at a particular time, SSAFA and its volunteers aims to help.
These days we work mainly with those who have left the services, helping at times of financial need, advising on pensions and housing. We help those who are lonely, homeless, anxious or who need equipment or funding.
Our caseworkers work on a one to one basis with clients supported by the military benevolent funds and relevant civilian charities.
We have other volunteers who visit for tea and biscuits and management posts for team leaders, team treasurers and admin support.
